We're going to DLR in a few weeks for a mini vacation with DH's family and we decided to eat at the Jazz Kitchen one night. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to order? I don't like seafood so that cuts out a lot of choices. I've been there once but it was for lunch. Suggestions?

Also, the kids menu says you can add a side for $1.95 and one of the choices is mashed potatoes. Has anyone had the mashed potatoes off the kid's menu? Are they lumpy or smooth? I wanted to get some for DS but he can't have them if there are big lumps or pieces of potato skin or other things added in. Does anyone know what they are like?

Wow...no seafood? That does significantly lessen the amount of choices you have. I've never had the mashed potatoes but I love the Bourbon Street Sampler (however, it does have fried calamari and coconut shrimp). If other people in your party can eat the seafood, you can still eat the yummy BBQ pork sliders and the chicken spring rolls. Otherwise, maybe you can inquire about substituting some things as they don't offer the BBQ sliders on their own. I also love their gumbo so you can order that. Good luck deciding what to eat!

I had the chicken when I ate there and that was very nice.

I also had the garlic bread to start (with no cheese), but I think they may have removed that from the menu now as I can't see it on the allears menu dates January :sad1:

My husband got a chicken dish that came with a side of cheesy grits- he loved it. I got a simple salad with raspberry vinaigrette. I am sorry I don't remember the dish names, but both were good. Have fun!

Jambalaya. I think it has some shrimp, but that's it for seafood (I don't eat seafood either). It should be pretty easy to pick the shrimp out too if you want.

And for dessert - double chocolate bread pudding. Boy I miss that!

Julie, Jadey says her mashers had skins in them, they were smooth but they did have skins. she has them almost every time because she likes them. :)
I love the 3 soup trio and the salad, very good...but honestly the French Onion soup wasn't that great, the tomato bisque was super good tho, but it was lobster/tomato so.....Ok so I had the soups 1-1-1, which is 3 small cups of soup, very small cups. LOL I also had the french quarter salad. I've also had the grilled chicken & penne and Micah had the Medalions of Beef, they were good. :)

Yes...definitely avoid their French Onion Soup. I also tried the 1-1-1 soup trio but only liked the gumbo (their soup of the day that time tasted funny as well but the tomato bisque sounds delish!)

The paneed chicken on the 3 course menu is simply divine. Comes with grits and then your choice of soup or salad to start and dessert to wrap up the meal right. I highly recommend the salad and the apple cheesecake. Best meal I've ever had at DLR including having dined at Club 33.

The medallions of beef, cheese garlic bread are both great. Its also one of the only places I have been that has a sazerac on the menu. Most bartenders dont even know how to make one!

Do not leave that restaurant unless you've ordered Bananas Foster for dessert. OMG! It's so good, it ought to be a sin.:thumbsup2

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! :) I'm making mental notes (chicken is good, beef is good, desserts are good, french onion soup - not so much).

And thanks Kerri for the description of the mashed potatoes. I wonder if i could easily take the pieces of potato skin out or if it would hard to do. I'm assuming the potatoes come with gravy?

Exactly the thread I was about to post... well except for the mashed potato kid. LOL Thank goodness my kids are a bit past that stage now. Oh, how I remember those days! I even had to ask about the PBandJ at Blue Bayou thats how picky one of mine was!

Thanks for all the info here!

The pasta jambalaya is one of my favorites. It does normally come with shrimp but they can easily take it out for you. My friend is allergic so they make it without the shrimp. They will even bring you the shrimp portion on the side if someone else in your group wants it.

My son had the grilled chicken and penne and it was pretty good too.

I'll have to tell DH about the jambalaya. He likes to order that at restaurants sometimes and he likes shrimp so that would be no problem for him. I'll have to think about it for myself too.

Glad this thread could help you out too! It sounds like there's lots of good things to choose from. Might be a tough decision. :)

As for the potatoes, it's not that DS is picky, exactly, but he isn't able to eat anything that's chunkier than stage 3 baby food. He's 4.5 but he's only been eating for about a year and a half and it's a very, very, long, slow process for someone to learn how to eat when they 1) didn't learn it as an infant and 2) don't like to eat. So he's working on learning how to chew but hasn't mastered it yet so everything has to be pureed. I long for the day that i'll just be able to order him a regular kids meal at a restaurant and not have to bring special food for him. That's why i wanted to see if the mashed potatoes would work so maybe i would have one less meal to worry about bringing.

Well I cant think of a better place to try the chunkier mashed potatoes! I hope he loves them and has a great time!

(PS: another thought... have you tried one of those small food choppers? I have used one since my oldest was at about that stage 3 baby food stage. I still use it for chopping onions and such when I was something really really small. If you have not you shoudl pick up a cheap one at walmart and see if you like it. I love mine!)
