January timing question?

Looking for perspectives! We have a 6 night stay booked as follows-1/1/04-1/4/04 GF, 1/4/04-1/7/04AKL. With respect to potential crowds and "possible" discounts, does a switch to 1/3 or 1/4 check-in GF, for 3(or 4) nights, than 3 nights at AKL,MAKE SENSE? My airfare for this switch would probably save me enough to add the 7th night. I know value season starts 1/1/04, but I just have a feeling if there are AP or room only disccounts(or even a great package) it may not start until 1/3/04 0r 1/4/04? Will the New Years crowds(particularly at MK) still be heavy through 1/3 or 1/4?

Not an expert, but...I would think crowds would be heavy through the weekend - as most kids don't go back to school until Mon. Jan. 5th!
