January No Buy: Let's Start the Year Right!

I'm new to this and my goal is 10 no buy days. So far I've done pretty well.
Jan 1: 0
Jan 3: 0
Jan 4: 0

We're also really trying to write down everything we spend because we are determined to save more this year. Fingers crossed...

1/1: groceries (but I forgot how much and don't want to get off the couch!)
1/2: $42 gas, $20 pharmacy, $28 JCPenney, ? Home Depot (again, don't want to get off the couch!). I also returned to Lands' End and Kohl's today, enough to cover what we spent! :) Edited to add: $65 on registration for open swim time. Hopefully we'll get there more often this session than last and I can get some exercise!
1/3: :cool1: (although I feel a bit guilty about it -- the only reason it's a $0 is because I forgot to take the checkbook to pay for after school care.)
1/4: after school care $31.50, take out for dinner ?
1/5: :cool1:
1/6: :cool1:

no buy days: 3/10
meals out: 1/5
longest streak: 3!

Well, I am back in with a new plan. My goal 365 days ago today was to do this for a year. Never thought I'd make it, sure as heck didn't think I'd write down every penny I spent for a year, but I did and while I thought this would only be a one year thing to teach myself, it not only did that but I also like so many people here so much that I don't want to leave.

OK, I gave it some thought. Not to say DH wasn't supportive of this last year, cause he is the most supportive man you could ask for, but something that really bothered him last year was when we'd go without something like milk cause I was trying to strech a no buy day to the next day or something, or let my tank get low cause I didn't want to blow a day on gas. To him groceries and gas are necessities and he said he'd like to see me alter it this year not not include those things. However, I want to continue to record them to keep track cause I think seeing it helped me, so I will continue to record everything but no buy days will now be no extra buy days. We'll see how this works. Also, I recorded every penny spent last year, so I have totaled up each month and my goal for this year is to come under that. Anything I have left over at the end of the month I will put into our savings account.

January 1-$0 :woohoo: Actually, not totally :woohoo: but good for the budget, we were going to go out today while DH worked, but the kids were having fun playing at home so that was good, but we were going to go to Cosmic Bowling tonight when he got off work but he's stuck there, it will be an all nighter, so we decided to hang out here and go with him another time. It isn't as much fun doing those things without him. So, a little bummed we are in but we are going to back some cookies here in a bit and they are having fun playing with their new games. Right now they are building forts for the kittens. :)
January 2-$0 :woohoo: Today was a wonderful day AT HOME! My DH finally didn't have to go into work. He worked till 4am so we slept in. Then we got up and snuggled on the couch and watched football. This afternoon we sampled our candies that we brought back from each country in EPCOT, we took photos for our scrapbook and the kids recorded what they thought of each one and ranked their favorites and least favorites. That was fun. Then tonight I made a nice roast for dinner. Now DH is working (but from home!) I am Dising and the kids are playing Truth or Lies on the Wii. It is a nice way to end vacation, wish it wasn't already over, but looking forward to getting the house back in order.
January 3-$0 :woohoo: I do need to get a few groceries, but they wouldn't count anyway, but I worked really hard today and never got out for them and now I am tired. I will have to go tomorrow. We are out of milk but have pleanty of eggs so we are good for breakfast and pleanty of bread so we are good for lunches. (One of this years resolutions is to declutter a bit (not too much, I did a huge declutter a few years ago and missed my stuff, but halfway would be nice, I worked all day on the kitchen. It isn't done but I made amazing progress!)
Now, I do have to do some shopping, we will see if I do it tonight or tomorrow. DD16 and DD11 need jeans so badly, I didn't realize how bad and I am actually a little embarassed and DD8's b-day is next week and all she wants is for me to replace The Little Mermaid 2, ours broke so I am watching a couple on eBay. Guess it doesn't matter if I do it tonight or tomorrow, but as of now it is a $ day. ETA- I am totally craving a date with my hubby, maybe I can buy jeans, a movie and meet him for lunch tomorrow...hhhmmm... ;)
January 4-$0 :woohoo: I did buy a copy of The Little Mermaid 2 off eBay for DD's b-day, it was $18 but I returned the Perfect Brownie Pan and a game I had bought for DD's b-day. The game I thought was on clearance but was not and the pan, she wanted it but then after I bought it, it looked like a headache to clean and we rarely make brownies so I got back $32.23 so I am calling it a wash. I traded for what she really wanted and saved $15. I also bought groceries but with my DH's system I won't count it, though I am going to record it. ($66.12 groceries) I also paid for dance which I never counted against a no spend day, we consider it a bill but I record it since it is the ony bill I pay-$86
December 5- Target (sympathy card, socks for DD8's b-day, she needed them and anframe on clearance of Kitty's first Christmas) $14.82 Dinner for the kids at Family Night $4.50 (I got a burger, fries, 2 cookies, a rootbeer float and a slush that they shared all of it.) Then we came home and had the dinner I had made, meatloaf, garlic cream cheese mashed potatoes and broccoli.) So under $20, not too bad. Dollar Tree (b-day invites) $4.32 (forgot these)
December 6-$0 :woohoo: The weekend it won't be so easy. I NEED a date with my hubby!

5/15 No Spend Days This Month Looking at making this number higher since I am not counting groceries at least for this month. Not sure what to set it for, this is a trial month I guess.

Total groceries for the month-$66.12
Total gas for the month- $0

My new goal for myself is to come in under the $ amount I spent last January. Here's how I'm doing.
$1278.99 spent last January
-66.12 groceries
-18 b-day gift
+32.23 credit
-14.82 gift, card
-4.50 family night
-4.32 invites
$1203.46

Virgderon, we only had one car for the first 4ish years of our marriage. You'd think that was the case but I spent more cause I was so worried about running out of something. Course I was young and stupid but really I was always worried about n ot haveing produce that I would overbuy and then it would go bad. My DH worked over an hour away so by the time he got home at night I was too tired to go out so I only went on the weekends. Now I'd be better like you are now, but back then I was not a good planner.

I had a vision last night in my sleepy, can't sleep state. I didn't know how to do this year but it came to me. I am going to continue to follow DH's suggestion of not counting groceries and gas, but my goal is going to spend less then this month last year. Since I recorded every penny I spent I know how much it was. I am going to take anything I save at the end of this month from last month and put it into our savings account. This month will be a challenge for me. My DD8's b-day is next week and we are having a party which we didn't have last year. So, it will be a challenge but I think it will be fun for myself. I am going to go total everything I spent last January and edit this later.

$1828.99 Spent last January :scared:
$550 of it was the deposit on DD11's braces, so I will take that away, that is not a normal expense.
So, my goal is to be UNDER $1278.99

And this is where we ran into trouble. As you know I got married when I was 17 and got pregnant by surprise right away. At the time my DH was making $10,000 a year so we often bought things like diapers on credit. We never, never, never ate out or went to the movies, we didn't have cable. We were broke. I wouldn 't trade it for anything I am OK with what we had to do, but we never had a time where we could save much because of the rockey start. We made it through and it made us stronger, but I have no idea how it is to save without kids cause we got married, saved to move, moved and SURPRISE (a good surprise, but still a surprise.) After that anything we had went to getting a crib and stuff like that. BUT, that is all paid off now, no worries. It was worth the interest charges to have her. :goodvibes

And I know all about the appliances. Our washer and dryer and dying, they are over 17 years old. When I bought them it was just hubby and I so we went small and cheap. We have to run it all the time cause it holds so little, but I can say we got our money's worth for sure! :rotfl:
Our fridge is 14 years old and is going. We had the money saved to replace it but remember when I tried to make my mom happy meeting her in Vermont? Well, that took the money. So we are saving for that now.

But, at the same time we are saving and trying to pay off things we are also trying to enjoy life. I know some don't agree but that is the nice thing about this board, no one judges even if they disagree. The way I see it no one else is paying our bills so no one else gets to tell us what we should do with our money.

I would love it if our fridge lasted another 7 years - we had to completely empty it last weekend, (thank goodness the zero degree weather kept everything cold in the garage:laughing:!), so we could thaw it out to try to figure out the problem. We figured out the fridge and freezer work, just the ice maker has stopped, so we decided to just buy a bag of ice, fill the ice tray, and keep the fridge until it stops working (or until it drives us bonkers not having an ice maker- whichever comes 1st;), but I think we can live for awhile!).

It is true this is a really positive, non-judgemental thread:thumbsup2. There are as many different budgets as there are people, and so many different finacial histories and incomes, so it's neat to see so many working toward the goal of saving, using the method that works for them and their families.:goodvibes

Woo hoo, I love fresh starts, and a new year is a big one! Hello No Buy friends, and welcome to the new ones. Think I will shoot for another 10 no buy days, both dd4 and dh have January birthdays, and we leave for our trip the 1st week of Feb, so I may need to buy a few things for that. Good luck everyone!

Really great to see lots of new no-buyers- welcome everyone! Dh and I went on a movie and dinner (gift card!) date yesterday, I took our budget notebook, so we had our annual budget meeting on the way to town and listed our goals for 2011.

I use the envelope system (actually mine is an small accordian file folder). Using cash for everything (started last Aug) has been a great help (that and writing down everything I spend). I would really like to get our grocery and household goods spending down, I was lumping them together but I think I'll seperate them so I can see where the leaks are. I do meal plan and we eat out once a week, usually, but I think we could be spending less . I buy a lot of fresh veggies, fruit, lean meats, greek yogurt, cheese and almond milk, but I won't compromise on that- I think I'll try to menu plan from the adds more consistently and stock up when the things we use are on sale.

Jan 1 - Movie w/ dh, popcorn

Jan 2 - clearance t-shirts for trip, shelf for ds8's finished Lego masterpieces

Jan 3 - groceries

Jan 4 - $0

Jan 5 - dh's b-day gift from the kids

Jan 6 - Groceries @ Wal Mart, lunch w/ mom & dd4

I'm in but obviously late. Been rockin' it though! My goal is 10 no buy days. Already on day 5 so might end up shooting for 12 or 15, heck maybe even 20!!

January is easy for us though since it's the month we have the least amount of extra stuff to do/pay for. Besides our regular bills I'm allowing $150 for fun stuff, $50 for FIL's bday gift and $400 for groceries/dining out.

Maybe I should give my car away. Its really easy to get no buy days when you can't go anywhere. :-)

Both our cars are quite old, and we think fiance's car will probably die within the year. Once it dies, we'll just have 1 car for a while. I'm actually kinda looking forward to that as I'm hoping to save some money (less gas, less insurance, less usual maintenance.)

Great start of the year. Wonder how long it'll last... We did buy our plane tickets for our next Disney trip, but of course that comes from a special budget. :woohoo:

No Buy Days : 5/15
Gas : 0$ (max 100$)

It's true- when you don't have a car, you start worrying about what you need , even if you might not need it! I hardly ever drive my car, but when I don't have it I feel anxious.

Next week I have a 2nd interview for a new job. I have a work at home job now, and there are definitely benefits to that, but I'm not growing much with it ( no raise in 3 years) , so it feels like it might be time. If I decide to take the new job, I will be a couple buildings down from DH and we will go to work together.

So many things to think about! I'm worried about the extra expense of working in an office, the clothes I would need, the temptation to eat lunch out, if I will have the time or desire to coupon and plan meals like I do now.

I'll be getting rid of my car because I will need it even less so that is a savings.

2011 is going to be a year of change for sure. We'd like to buy a house here in 2012 so we really need to pay off things and save, a potential new job., both DDS starting new lives, one at law school, one transferring college, one stepkid who can't get his act together that we pay rent and expenses for.... I worry so much it's a wonder I am sleeping at all.

This thread helps keep me sane. What I spend on extras is the one thing I can control, and you all help me do it.

Sorry for rambling. I have been doing that a lot lately. :confused3

After my husband lost his job we eventually had to give up our newer van and just go with the paid for one. I am amazed first that we have managed with just one vehicle, and second at the money saved. I know it might not work for some people because of distances, small children, etc. But for us, it has been really eye opening. We walk, ride our bikes, co-ordinate schedules, or share rides with others (paying our share of gas..no mooching). I'm really loving the savings and after the inital adjustment we have managed and don't feel like we need 2 cars anymore.

This was a good week!!
