January 2009. . . Calling all Snowbirds ~ Part V

I am so excited!!! .....or at least I was, still am, just not as much. I taught myself how to knit. I have always wanted to know how, and can crochet and cross stitch with no problem. However, no one in my family knows how to knit, so they couldn't show me, and I don't learn well by just looking through books. I was able to find some videos on line and was able to figure it out that way. So, I'm sitting on the couch in my DH's office working on another row really excited that I figured it out and in walks my DS10. He looks at me and says, "Wow mom you can knit, just like all the other old ladies and grannies." Which I followed with, "if you value your rear end like it is now, pain and wedgie free, I would run." Lucky for him he did. :lmao: Now I just have to figure out how wide I want the scarf I am going to knit for our January Disney trip. At each end I'm going to have a Mickey head. The yarn is a multi color green, purple, blue. I'm not sure if the Mickey heads will be in the same color, or maybe a color of pink that will complement the colors in the yarn of the scarf. What do you ladies think?

Congratulations! That's quite an accomplishment! I love to knit - my mother taught me, but she's left-handed and I'm right, which raised a whole host of other issues! :rotfl:

As far as the Mickey heads - lime green, of course!

:rotfl: Congrats on teaching yourself!
Will you make one for me? That sounds so cute! I think a lime green Mickey head would be perfect!
It's sort of funny, when I was a kid, my mom used to knit scarves and mittens for us. Back then, it was sort of uncool. Now, I wish she'd take it up again! Knitted scarves are cool! I think she can crochet, but she has arthritis pretty bad.

I would so love to be able to knit or crochet...my mom tried to teach me to crochet a few years ago - her arthritis is pretty bad, plus I just don't think she had the patience! :) I'd like to be able to sew, too.

Ugh! I'm still in the funkiest of funks! We are supposed to close on Monday and it's just starting to feel really sketchy. I went home at lunch and packed up out dresser drawers. I wanted to cry my eyes out. I'm really going to miss our place. We've talked with two builders, but are waiting until we close to make a decision. On top of that Belle was sick last night, so I didn't get to sleep- probably explains my grouchiness.

Anyhow- to make myself feel better I ordered Belle two new outfits for our next possible Disney trip.:thumbsup2

Soleil!! You are a hoot!! I usually get on the website and plan vacations!! Ha!! I am still workin' on dec, by the way!!!! I hope once ya'll sign papers, you will feel better and can focus on the next step.

As far as our Dec trip....I have figured that staying at the CR tower, theme park view is only gonna be aroun $80 or so cheaper than the Bay Lake Tower!!! I might can talk hubby into that!!! Of course, he is gonna come back with his old argument of liking everything under one roof. So....maybe I can pin him down before long!!!!

Shelly--how is it going with your sale/buy? hopefully it's smooth sailing for ya!!!

Oh Soleil, don't you hate it when your gut speaks to it and the message isn't so good.
I have been in our new home for 2 years in july and I still miss my first home. I also sometimes cry :sad1:I hope it all works out for you and your family, and pray there is nothing sketchy with your deal.

Sure, just find some yarn that you like, and PM me and I'll PM you my address. I thought about a lime green Mickey, but I'm not sure how it will look with the colors. I'll add pics below of what it looks like so far. I thought about embroidering it on by hand, but I haven't done that much of it. Since I can be a perfectionist, I don't know if I want to try and them mess up the entire scarf. I may just go and see if I can find one in a store and then just hand stitch it on, or maybe borrow one of my mom's sewing machines and do it that way.

I would so love to be able to knit or crochet...my mom tried to teach me to crochet a few years ago - her arthritis is pretty bad, plus I just don't think she had the patience! :) I'd like to be able to sew, too.

Luckily, I come from a family with women that sew a lot. In fact my mom made all of my barbie clothes. She would even make me matching outfits with my barbies. She can see something in a store and go and make a pattern for it. Actually, we both used to sew professionally. She started working for the company first and then I worked for her. It was a company that made all African American dolls named Daddy's Long Legs, but the company is now out of business. Now that I have learned to knit, the only thing left I really want to learn (sewing wise) is tatting. I had a great grandmother that could do it, and I have some of the lace that she made.

Ok, so here are the pics of my current project:

that is soooo cool!! you are a talented lady!!! I embroidered and took sewing lessons in Jr. High. i actually made a little pink jump suit that I wore to school!!! Sometimes I think I would love to get back into all that ,but right now the thought just makes me tired. (Do we have a smiley for tired?).
I do think that knitting would be relaxing...especially in the winter when it gets dark early....just sounds like a cozy thing to do!!!

Soleil - hang in there!! Something wonderful is just around the corner and your mood will change!

That scarf is really pretty!! I may take you up on your generous offer!

It does sound like the cozy thing to do in winter. Also DH and I have been watching a lot of movies on Netflix and my hands have to be busy or it drives me insane. While we watch movies, I sit and knit.

Thanks, and just let me know when you find the yarn that you like.

How long did it take you to learn with the videos? I'd love to leanr, I love your scarf!

I'm having a better day today. I heard from the closing people today. They said the plan is still for Monday. We have a big weekend of moving ahead of us!

It didn't take long. If you aske my DH, he'll tell you that I watched the vidoes at least 200 times each. What they didn't tell you was that in order for it to look like mine does, you have to do a row of knit stitch and a row of purl stitch. It actually took me longer to figure that out than how to knit. My mom called this morning and asked me how I had been doing. I told her "great, I had just been knitting a lot." She was like "what? Your knitting? I can't even knit, and many people have tried to teach me and given up b/c I just couldn't get it." Now my mom wants me to teach her how to knit.:lmao:

I'm glad to hear your having a better day. My DH was a loan processor and underwriter for years and (not to make you more worried) told me of many times that the deal fell through at the end b/c of one thing or another. As I was reading the thread yesterday, he sat down next to me and started reading. When he saw your post he said, "Now that's a smart girl. Your sister should have been the same way when buying her house." My sister just bought her first home and he gave her advice on things to do and she blew off any of his advice.

Honestly either of those would work. That little girl is just too adorable!! However since there would be no Disney without the mouse, I pick the one with Mickey.

Soleil, I vote for the Mouse. When you have a choice, always go with the top guy!

I'm a huge Tink fan so I always go with Tink. However, little Belle loves her Go-Go, so you should probably go with Mickey!

Soleil that's hard!!! She loves Go-Go, but her daddy said she was tiny like Tinkerbell when she was born, so..... I don't know!!!!!!! I love tink, but maybe for her, Mickey, the Main Man!!! I do looooooove her dress!!!!!

Soleil, I think I'd go with Mickey! She is adorable!

Question...what would be a good gift for a baptism? My goddaughter is being baptized on July 5 and the only thing I came up with so far is to start a charm bracelet for her :confused3.

So how is everyone's summer so far?!?!
