January 13-20/2007 Western Cruise

Great trip report , can't wait to hear more :yay:

We sailed in April with our twins 5 at the time, we from NY as well.
Right now I am living vicariously through your report since we have 3 feet of snow right now and another 8 months before the next cruise . Sounds like you had a wonderful time.

Another glorious day with a tinge of clouds in the sky. We head up to Topsiders after sleeping in a little. We had to be down for our shore excursion by 10:20am so we had plenty of time to get ready and get a nice breakfast. Again, Topsiders is a great location and we eat up. Of course, the kids attack another plate full of Mickey waffles.

Moira gettig ready for the day

We headed over to Rockin Bar D to meet up. We are about 20 minutes early and just sit and relax. We send up James with our tickets and he comes back with some nice Minnie stickers. He is in charge he say sas he puts the stickers on us. We walk out and get in a line outside the ship. Very nice walking out and stepping on the dock instead of tendering. I saw a lot of ships tendering but only 3 ships on the dock. We are one of the lucky few. The dock looks good and there are no remnants of the hurricane noticeable. We walked towards the main road and that is when you can see the massive construction going on. There are many roads, sidewalks and buildings being built or fixed in the area. We walk and load onto 3 buses. There was a big crowd for the Cozumel Beach break shore excursion that we were on. We were told that we will be on a 20 minute bus ride and get off at the private beach set up for us. the beach is called Playa Mia.

We arrive and head through the parking lot and walk through a small mall area that has walk in shops. It seems that these are new or just remodeled. There is also some fencing up with construction behind it. Looks like they are building a playground as well. We are told that we have access to a private area of the beach, bicycle boats, kayaks, life vests, a free buffet, and drinks. The kids and I hit the ocean before you can say swim. We tried everything. the kids enjoyed the kayaking with Mom and Dad but not the bicycle boats as much. It seems the drivers (parents) had a tough time manuevering the contraptions. We conducted a quick snorkel lesson and Moira decided she wanted to play with Mommy on the beach so James and I hit the ocean. James was a natural. At 5 he was snorkeling like a king and that is what he began to call himself, the Snorkel King. We saw alot of fish and had great fun.

After a couple of hours we headed over to the buffet. It was under a giant overhang so you would be protected from the sun. The food there was pretty good. They had bbq chicken, salads, ribs, nachos, chicken nuggets and the kids favorite, jello. We had a good lunch and headed back to go swimming. This time we figured because we only had about another hour or so, it was about 2pm, we would hang by the pool. The had a pool right near where you eat so we got our stuff and moved it to the pool area. The kids and I had a lot of fun by the pool as they practiced there swimming and jumping on Daddy techniques. We were told that the bus would leave at 3pm so we headed back and stopped in some of the stores set up in the mall area. Mary tried to buy some stuff for the neices and nephews but it was more than we wanted to spend. It seems that there was no bargaining with some people.

The kids and I in the pool

The bus ride back was uneventful but we were dropped off on the other side of the rode behind an outdoor mall. We would have to walk through the mall to get to the docks. I guess the Disney way has reached here (walking through shops after rides). We resisted and headed back up to the ship. On the way there we got another look at a yacht which was parked in a space there. man this thing was beautiful. We ssaw it earlier but was able to appreciate it and look at it in depth. I wish I took a picture of it but it was nice imagining having that thing. Very big, helicopter on the back and small boat attached to the side. Ahh dare to dream. So it was about 3:30 and instead of going back to the room right away the kids and I hit the pool. There was not many kids in the pool so they had a great time swimming, running, sliding and splashing. In fact, we were told the ship was sold out (2700 people) but we enver even felt it. We stayed a little while and then headed back up to get ready for dinner. We were heading to Lumeire's for the Pirate dinner and we wanted to be ready for the Pirate party later that night.

We saw this yacht, too. WOW!:thumbsup2 At first I thought it was another small cruise ship - one of those for 50 people or so, but after we looked closer, we decided it was a private boat.

How do you get invited for THAT trip?!??!

What a great dinner. It seems like I am always saying this but the food and service are brilliant. It feels like Okim and Ricardo are part of the family by now. The custom pirate themed menu is a realy nice touch. While we are not all decked out we do have our pirate bandanas on and James had on his pirate captain's hat. We were running a little late so by the time dessert came rolling around the kids wanted to go up to the club to take part in the So you want to be a Pirate thing there. So Mary walked them up while I finished my glass (bottle :drinking1) of wine. The kids did miss the parade around the restaurant but I am sure they were having a great deal of fun anyway.

Mary and I had some time to relax by ourselves so we headed over to the stores. We bought some souvenirs and then headed back to the room. The party was slated to start around 9:45 and I wanted a really good spot. So we went and picked the kids up and headed upstairs. We staked out and secured a good piece of real estate right up front by the stage. We hung out while the kids ran around and played with the other kids. Moira had made a friend in the pool that day so she was playing with her and James was playing pirate with the boys. They all had swords or toy guns so of course James made us buy him one. Then at the right time the party started. There was music and dancing galore. It was a really fun time but I think the highlight was when Mickey swopped in overhead to the song "Hero" or "I need a hero" (don't know the true title). This was a great moment to see the big cheese flying in. Immediately the fireworks started to go off. Another treat is for Disney to have permission to set of fireworks. Apparently they are the only cruise line that can do this. It was a great moment.

Not to be outdone by the performers, our very own guy in charge, Christiaan (the cruise director) took to the stage and cut loose. Damn, I can't dance to save my life but if I needed soemone I would ask him to step in. That man can move. Everyone was great and we had a lot of fun. Mary took James back to the room and Moira and I hung around. We got a couple of drinks and got a lounge chair set up to watch the first Pirates movie on the Jumbo screen. We did not partake but there is a giant buffet set up after the party. Everything looked so good but we were still full. Whatever you wanted including desserts they certainly seemed to have it.

Moira eventually fell asleep on my lap and we went up to the room about an hour into the movie. This was probably the best day out here and that is saying a lot based on the fact that everyday has been great.

up next : Day at Sea

awesome report !! my hubby and i are going to the wine tasting... luv my wine. :cool1: so i'm glad you enjoyed it!!

Lookin' forward to some more!!!

We staked out and secured a good piece of real estate right up front by the stage.

We saw you guys - you did have a great spot! Paul and I were there (the kids were in the room sleeping and Oma was babysitting). We were just a bit to the left of you. We were next to the teen group that came up. They were fun - although we felt a bit showed up by their costumes, they danced, so that was nice to have company with that!

We must have left before Christiaan showed his 'moves'. :sad2: I would have loved to have seen that! We left after the fireworks were over.

There were 2 people that made me laugh - just curious if you saw them, too. (begging pardon if it's anyone reading this!):duck: One was the lady who was lying in the middle of the dancing crowd on her chaise lounger (with a sleeping child on her lap). I understand wanting to stake out good territory, but maybe the lounge chairs should be up on Deck 10 or in the back of the crowd, not front and center! Everyone is trying to cha-cha, hustle, whatever and we're running into her chair! The other was a lady who came barreling through in her motorized scooter - again, right into the middle of those dancing! :headache: I'm all for access for everyone, but again, if you're not  you should step back a bit.

The wine tasting seminar is well worth the time and money. Mary and I enjoy our wine and it was really fun learning and of course drinking the wine. I am reall hooked on the dessert wine they gave us. Boony Dock Muscat. Very nice..... You wil definately enjoy it as well.

Christiaan was the MAN!! He was awesone. It was a dance off contest between the boys and girls up on the stage. They both did the same moves and the crowd was the judge. Of course once everyone saw Christiaan dancing and being so good it was obvious to everyone that the boys took home the prize.

I did see the lady in the lounge chair. In fact she staked out that chair really early. Mary pointed it out and said she wanted a chair but of course I said no, we must follow the rules and she is only going to be in the way. Which she obviously was. I did not see the other lady but Mary did and she made the same remark as you. That it looked like she barrelled through people. Listen, I am in no way putting people down who are lazy (chair lying person) or have special needs but you have to know what you are getting yourself into if you attend one of these events. It is not like you have a lot of places to hide and relax. It is a cruise ship and there are not many places you can go. Funny thing is that before the party started there were two workers who saw the person in the lounge chair and stopped by her. I noticed them and they continually looked at each other as if asking what should we do? They did nothing and eventually walked away. I guess they did not want to be the bad guy and say "I am sorry miss but you can not have that chair where the party is going to be held. There will be dancing and it is a safety factor for all those involved. Thank You." Personally if I was them I would have said, "Listen stupid can't you see all the lounge chairs are off to the side and stacked up for a reason. Smartin' up or go back to your room"....!!!:rotfl: I know not very Disney-like but hey, I am from New Yawk.

Well, for all of you that have been following and for those that have not, I apologize for the delay in my posting. It seems that I just have not had the time lately but here we go...

Thursday, Day at Sea...

We wake up on the latter side of 8 and get ready for the day. It is just magnificent outside as we cruise towards Castaway Cay. We head up to get some breakfast at Topsiders. It's just the kids and I because Mary decided to hit the gym early this morning.

We head back up to the room and meet up. Moira and James decide they want to go to Detective School in the Club so I take them up there. This is good because I then can go to the Sports trivia contest in Diversions while Mary heads for her facial at 11.

The sports trivia is fun and I do pretty well but I miss winning by one answer. I think there were 20 questions and I got 14 right and the winner got 15, I think. Oh well, it was a 30 minutes of fun and alone time. I head to go and get the kids now but they have already gone up and started eating lunch. They are in Animators by the time I get upstairs and I let them finish. Of course, once I should up they were finished whether I wanted them to be or not.

We decided to head back to the room and the kids want to go swimming. So, they changed into their suits and we raced up to the pool. Drat, again with the cleaning. If I had a complaint it was this. On both sea days, they decided to clean the pool. Hmmm, you would think that with everyone on the ship, beautiful day some people may want to swim. Oh well, they were finishing up so we waited around (about an hour) for them to fill the pool up. This time they emptied the entire pool. Mary came up and we hung out there and watched the kids get in some pool time.

I left them all at the pool while I went down to take the Galley Tour. It was around 2 and we were broken up into two groups in front of Lumiere's. We were introduced to the Galley officer in charge of everything. He then introduced us to all the chefs of the respective restaurants. He also introduced us to the chef in charge of preparing the food for the crew. He said he was the most important chef (only he should know). We walked into the kitchen of Lumiere's and they showed us eveything (although at a distance). It was amazinng how big this kitchen, whcih is actually two kitchens (Parrot Cay's is connected to the kitchen). The stoves and soup bin are huge and eveything about it says BIG is better. We asked questions and they answered. I was amazed at how much and how quickly they are able to prepare food items. Everything is spaced out and is prepared by different people. Everyone in the kitchen has a specific task. We made our way down the kitchen and came to the pastry area. There we were introduced to I thiink the most important chef on the ship, the pastry chef. We all thanked him for a job well donw and he told us some interesting facts about all the desserts and how they are prepared. He also gave us some chocolate chip cookies (I knew there was a reason I came on this tour). We saw Parrot's kitchen (a smaller version) and then exited into Parrot Cay. We were told some more interesting facts and I asked the officer what they do with all the leftover food. He said that as long as the are 11 miles out the grind it up and make it into a paste type solution and dump it overboard for all the little fishies to eat. I found this interesting and he also said that this is the practice all over the world. Wow you can learn something new, even on a Disney cruise. It was definately a fun and informative tour.

I then went back to the room and got the kids and took them to the club. They had rehearsal for the kid's club graduation ceremony and then Mary and I went over to the Final Bingo game of the week. Mary wanted to play and I would head to another beer tasting seminar while she did. Mary bought the 4 or 5 game package with the extra card for the last one. She said it was very hectic playing, especially that last game with the two cards to look after. But, she was in it to the end. She had to stand up because she only had one number left. But, alas, an 11 year old ended up winning. I think Mary said the prize was something like 4K-5K. Mary said if she had won I would have been sent right up to the cruise desk and ordered to book another one with the winnings.

The beer tasting , of course, was fabulous. There was many more people here on this day than Monday. It was probably because it was in the Navigator today. I was the only one double dipping though so I was proud about that. We had some really good beer today. I especially liked the Guinness. I am a huge Guinness fan (must be the fact that I am 100% Irish)and was proud to see it included. I had to order myself a pint as the small glass was not good enough. The seminar ended and I immediately went down to the theater to look for Mary and get ready for the graduation ceremony. Excpet, I forgot one thing...I did not know where I should be meeting Mary. We did not talk about it.

When I got to the theater I saw many kids lined up and went to the row Mary was playing the game but no Mary. I raced upstairs but no Mary. I went back down to the theater and finally Mary yelled out to me, she had moved to a middle row. Phewww..but wait, what no camera or video recorder. So, Tim had to hoof it back upstairs and get them and I made it back just in time as the kids started to head in. The ceremony was very fun and the kids were really excited about being on stage with Minnie and Mickey. Although, I could no catch them with the camera Mary was able to find them with the recorder. Here are some of the shots we took from the Celebrate the Journey ceremony.

Afterwards, Mary went to the room to get our semi-formal wear ready and I headed up to the club to collect my two little graduates. On the way back up to the room they just kept talking about how they were with Minnie and Mickey today on stage. We got dressed and headed up to Animators.

Dinner as always was very tasty and we al ate too much, especially me. This restaurant is very nice and the food is great but... I felt a little over dressed. we spent both fomal nights in this restaurant and I feel it is the least formal of the three. I don't know just a feeling but we enjoyed the restaurant anyway. The walls stayed the way they are as the second night there is no miraculous change over.

So we again headed up to our room, put on some comfy clothes and headed to do some shopping. We figured tonight would be as good a day to do that. We did not want to be bogged down tomorrow when everyone else is doing it. I headed up to Shutters and purchased some photos. I got a copy of one also so I was told to come back on Friday to collect it. I also purchased a 2-d crystal with our formal picture in it. I was told to come back Saturday morning before we left to get it. I met everyone else up and we picked out some souvenirs that we would buy after the show.

Tonight's show was Disney Dreams. I think this was the best show all week. It was acted perfectly and the songs were great. I think we all agreed that the shows on this ship are not to be missed. We were very sad that we only had one more left and wished we could go back a few days so we could see them all again.

So, we spent the rest of the night picking up and buying our souvenirs and relaxing. We knew we were going to have an early day so we headed upstairs sat down by the pool and had some ice cream. The kids were a little hungry so they also had a slice of pizza. We hung around and enjoyed quiet family time and then headed back up to the room to watch some TV and go to sleep.

Next...Castaway Cay

Here are some pictures taken on our Friday. I will add the content soon.

We didn't race off the boat in order to get the best spot on the beach. We took our time and had a nice breakfast in the stateroom. We went out and boy what a beautiful place this island is. Just walking off you can tell how much quality assurance goes into running this small island. The ship os tremendous looking docked in this port because of its shear size and the lack of size of the island. Another exciting thing was seeing the boat from Pirates docked there. We took some nice photos and I loved it.

We took the shuttle bus over to the beach and staked out a spot. As with the earlier trips to the beach, James and I hit the water and did some snorkeling. We snorkeled for a ong time all over the place. We saw a lot of fish and many things to sightsee in the water. James especially liked the Mickey statue. It took us awhile to locate it but once we did it was neat to see. Of course I had to swim down and touch it. Mary and Moira were playing in the surf and relaxing on the lounge chairs.

It was around noon and we decided to head over to the BBQ. Wow, what a spread. The food was fantastic. We seemed to load our plates up big time. It is nice to just sit in the cool camp like open air area with picnic tables. What a great lunch.

We relaxed a little more and then headed over to our excursion. We went and saw the sting rays. This was also fantastic. We swam and fed them. Moira tried to do it once but after she said it was too slimy and didn't want to do it again. James on the other hand, we couldn't stop him. He kept on feeding and feeding them. Its great how they have them trained so the swim up one side of the ramp and down the other side. Its especially funny when one comes up and another one comes up the other way. Little bit of a log jam.

Mary and I hung around a little and relaxed while the kids played in the sand. The were building sand castles and making friends. There was a CM there who had built a gigantic sand replica of the cruise ship. It looked great.

We finally headed back with a slow walk as we realized the ship would be one its way soon and that this was our last day. Overall, CC is great I would love to go back again and this island would definately call me back.

We got ready and went to dinner to say good-bye. We were not going to go to breakfast tomorrow at the restaurant so we wanted to say our good-byes to our servers tonight. After another fantastic dinner with great service we caught our last show. Again, nothing but top notch. After we hit the gift shop and the kids and I walked around waiting for the mad rush of characters. Mary went back up to the room to pack.

Finally the characters came out. All of them. From Mickey to Goofy, to Capt. Hook, to Stitch, to the characters and actors in the shows. It was great. We got on line with so many of them, it was hard to count. All I know is that my camera never got such a work out. The kids had a great time.

So, we finally arrived. It was sad waking up, really early and seeing Port Canaveral. While it was good to be home I can honestly say that this might be the best vacation I ever had.

We did not go to Parrot Cay for breakfast because we decided to sleep in a little bit. We knew we had to go but we took our time. Instead, we headed up to Topsiders to the buffet. This was so much better, I thought. We were one of the last off the ship and finding our luggage was very easy. there was not a lot left for us to look through. Getting through customs was a breeze and we hopped on the bus to MCO.

We had a 12:30 flight home. On the bus I realized that I forgot to pick up an item I purchased at Shutters. It was a crystal etched portrait of us that lights up. I attempted to call all day on the bus in the airport but to no avail it was a nightmare trying to get someone. I figured it was a no go and then finally someone gave me a number and I started getting somewhere. But, alas, that hit a dead end. As you notice I had some time here because our flight got delayed for a little while. Oh did I say that my wife left some Waterford glasses on the bus and I had to run after the bus before it left out of the MCO drop off point. I finally caught it at the guard booth. Boy, what a hassle we are.

Well, we finally arrived home all safe and sound. We are definately planning on going again. Who knows maybe in a couple of years (2009?). Until then we have the memories and our DVC membership to keep us going. Great talking to everyone and until next time, see ya real soon.

Tim

PS- After 2 months I finally got all the pieces of the crystal etched portrait.

We just got back and this has got to be the best vacation we have had since my son was born. Usually we do the parks, I love the MK but we come home after a week exhausted!! The cruise was great, in fact in Cozumel we didn't even get off the boat! The characters are all around and the Oceaneer Club (my son is 4 years old!) was engaging. My only issue with the Oceaneer Club is that 3&4 year olds were together with the 5yrs-7yrs for a couple of the events. The bigger kids were intimidating to some of the smaller 3 and 4 year olds but he had a great time anyway!

We had a such a great time we rebooked on the Disney Magic for Jan 2009! We can't wait to go! This is great family getaway for all ages.
