Has anyone read these books? Should they be read in order? J.D. Robb's Death novels are best read in order, and if I'm going to start a new series, I would like to do it the best way.

TIA

Kim

Read them all! They don't have to be read in order...there's a short "recap" in the beginning of each to explain the characters.

Caution....do not read before going to bed unless you are OK with staying up all night and/or DH is out of town and your snickering (and sometimes just :rotfl2: ) won't keep him awake. I speak from experience! I just love Lula!!!! Her antics make me :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: !

I'm on 7 right now and I don't think I'd read them out of order. Even though there is a re-cap, the realtionships with the various characters develop through each book. I don't think it would be the same to read them out of order.

Thanks, I read the book cover of the latest one in paperback at the grocery store today and I thought it might be like that. That is the reason reading the J.D. Robb books should be read in order, the main plots aren't continuing, but the characters' progressions are best read in order.

There are some in between the numbers books that I believe can be read in any order. I don't think they have all the main characters of the other books but I haven't read them so I can't say for sure.

I've read them all and would also recommend reading them in order if possible. Although each book is self-contained story-wise, there are often little things that carry over from one to the next. The characters definitely progress in relationships as the books continue as well.

There are a few exceptions, the author does some "between the numbers" Stephanie Plum books, usually with a holiday theme of some sort. So, if the title doesn't have a number in it, it's a standalone, but I'd still read some of the series first so you know who all of the players are.

I love the Stephanie Plum series. I would also highly recommend reading them in order. You don't absolutely have to, but you will understand the relationship between the characters much better if you do. The extra books like Plum Lucky, Plum Spooky, there's a Christmas one I don't remember the name aren't as important to read in order I think.

Enjoy the series they are great.

The Christmas one is "Visions of Sugar Plums" (original huh?)

Yeah I admit it...I'm a guy and I read the Plum books. You really don't have to read them in order but it does help.

Now you can join the debate of who you'd hook up with if you were Stephanie, Joe, Ranger or the occasional Diesel. :sad2:

Oh, I soooo want her and Ranger together.

I've read all of the number books and would definately read them in order. The between the number books, Visions of Sugarplums, is the first one and it introduces Diesel. I read the second one, Plum Lovin, first and then Visions and feel that they should be read in order too. Plum Lucky is the third one. There may be a 4th, I don't know. If you can, insert the between the number books in with the number books.

Janet Evanovich also has two other books that are written in the same way as Stephanie's. They are Motor Mouth and Metro Girl. I don't know if she is starting another series or not but they are funny to read.

I LOVE the Stephanie Plum stories. (Haven't read the ones between the numbers yet. I will have to get my hands on them. This is my reading time of year.)

And I would like to see Stephanie and Joe together. I tend to try to stay away from trouble. But then again, STEPHANIE doesn't! :teeth:

I love the Stephanie Plum series. I have read all the books except 2, 3 and 4. I getting the paperbacks of those to read on the plane going to WDW in May. They don't need to be read in order and they are very funny with great characters (love Lula and Grandma)!!

I want a torrid afair with Diesel AND Ranger -
but Stephanie needs Joe!

same as everyone else said - they don't have to be read in order, but it helps.

speaking of J.D. robb - I've been listening to some of the books on my MP3 player and I HATE the voice they've given Peabody! Argh! she sounds like such a putz!

I need another funny detective series to start.
Amelia Peabody is great, but I've read all of them.
Be sure to read Jasper Fforde's thursday next series if you like british humor
Jeeves and Wooster is good, but I've read all of them I can find.
I'm still working on Nero Wolfe -
any other suggestions for funny and mystery?

She actually has 10 or so non-Plum books that she wrote (I believe) before the Plum series. They have been re-releasing them over the last few years. They aren't bad. You will see some Plum type things in them.

If they made a movie of her books-who would play Lula? The descriptions of her outfits always has me :rotfl2: :lmao:
Love this series!

Another good series-funny & Mystery is Martha Grimes < Detective Jury series. The early ones each has a name of a british Pubb as the title-a really great cast of characters in these novels!:thumbsup2
