We're really wanting to take the kids to Universal. But we can't afford rooms onsite (we would need 2) and we can't afford to buy everyone express passes!

We have no problem getting to the parks at opening....as we always do this at Disney anyways. But are we going to be waiting in super long lines the entire trip without express pass? :guilty:

Any advice from anyone that's been there during that time and didn't have express pass? TIA!

It's extremely busy during that time period so you will have long waits and wall to wall people. Just plan to get there before opening and stay all day. With Transformers and the Simpsons area open by then, the Studios will be extra busy.

Personally, I'd rather go two days (say January 3 and 4), stay on-site for the night of the 3rd and get unlimited express for both park days. Express is SO worth it during that time; think 10-30 minute waits compared to 1-2 hour waits.

Forbidden Journey, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, and Pteranodon Flyers aren't included in Express Pass however, so you'll have to spare some time if those interest you. Forbidden Journey, on some days this past Christmas season, reached a 3 hour wait. However, they do have a single rider's line that allows you to bypass a lot of the wait at the cost of being split up while you ride.

Much like Disney, It will be insanely busy..Most schools are probably out till Monday the 6th, 2014..Very long long waits and lots of people.Wouldn't be surprised at a capacity closure either.Get there BEFORE opening and plan on being there ALL DAY.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, looks like we won't be able to go to Universal.:sad2: Just the cost of the tickets for 6 of us is high...we just can't possibly add in 2 rooms onsite as well. Even for 1 night that would be over $600!
