Not to step on anyone's toes, but as a DVC owner, I can offer you a few thoughts.
1 - If you have your heart set on a particular resort, you should figure out which one and be in contact with the rental agency at least 11 1/2 months prior to your scheduled first day. Owners at a resort can begin booking at the 11 months mark - all other DVC owners can only book at that resort 7 months out.
I know that you are looking for this month next year, so if you have your heart set of somewhere specific, you should get on it pretty quick.
2 - If you're not fussy about which resort you want to stay at, you may be ok booking at less than the 11 month mark, unless you're over a holiday season or some sort of special event such as Food&Wine, one of the marathons, etc. The larger resorts like SSR and AKV usually have some availability, but you just never know... The monorail resorts seem to be the first to go at the 7 month mark (if they even have any availability - wouldn't hold your breath for VGF - BLT may have something).
3 - I think points are renting for about $13 or $14 each. David's is a sponsor of the DVC boards and you can definitely find more information there. If you go privately, you may be able to save a dollar or two a point, but then you are working directly with someone and both parties have to have a fair amount of trust in each other (for them, that you'll actually pay and not leave the room trashed - for you, that they won't just take your money and run).
Hi Ted,
We are planning a family trip in Oct 2014 and will need 2 x 2 bedroom suites and 2 x 1 bedroom suites.
In the past we've booked villas through Disney to get the free dining plan deal, but those were booked close to departure dates.
With our group this big, I am concerned that the availability may not be there if we wait until the villas are made open to public (non DVC members) and so I'm considering renting points.
Do you mind messaging me with your experience - and an indication of how much the points usually cost?
thanks Ted
Joe
