I've never stayed Deluxe- where should I stay?

Hi everyone!

On our most recent trip to WDW, my husband and I came to the conclusion that we want to start staying Deluxe more often when we go. Especially since we plan to start having kids in the very near future, we feel that being closer to the resorts and having more dining on site might work better for us.

The thing is- while I've visited most of the Deluxe resorts for dining or sightseeing, I've never actually stayed at one (unless you count the Swan & Dolphin on a school trip years ago). Since most of our trips thus far have taken plan either on a college student's budget or through school trips, I've always stayed Value or Moderate.

I imagine all of the Deluxes have their perks and downfalls, but now's your chance to sell me on your favorite! We are currently trying to stay at every Disney hotel, so we will likely be at them all eventually, but which resort should I stay at first?

Are any of them better for babies/ families than others?

We like to do a lot of sit-down ADRs but don't tend to spend a whole lot of time at the pool (although we do like it!) if that makes any difference in your choice!

Thanks! :yay:

We did our first deluxe stay last year and loved it. We did a split with the Poly and BC. It was amazing. We loved them both but BC won out.

For your next trip I would do the BC before you have kids. The walk to Epcot is awesome. SAB is a great pool.

Once you have kids I would say the Contemporary would be great, or any monorail resort. A quick walk to MK. No opening and closing the stroller to get on the buses.

It really depends on your vacation style and plans. Do you do more than one day at MK? Do you spend a lot of time at the resort? Do you spend more time at Epcot/HS? Do you want in your face Disney or less? Each deluxe resort has their own style and advantage, I've stayed at all except WL and SSS and all the moderates except POFQ, only two values Pop and ASSp (discovered I'm not a value gal). I do split stays, just because I can since I drive down and it doesn't make sense to me to spend deluxe prices for that first night when I'm not going to arrive until around 2:30 and go directly to the park that day.

So once you've answered a few of those questions here are my thoughts:

If you are a MK person and spend most of your time there, go with a monorail resort or WL. Of the monorail resorts I rate mine #1 GF, #2 Poly and only if there is absolutely nowhere else on the entire property available CR. Over all I'm not fond of the monorail resorts because they force you to depend on the monorail (or boats) to get to both MK and Epcot and I can't tell you how much times I've been stuck on the darn thing because of delays between MK and Epcot. If they let you take a bus to Epcot, my opinion might change. Because of that, I'd probably go WL before any of them because you can bus if you want to.

GF is an elegant property, while some will say it's stuffy, I've never found it to be so. It is a beautiful resort, the rooms are comfortable and there are plenty of options for food and entertainment. There is a walking path between it and Poly. I did stay there when my son was around 9 or 10 and he had a blast but I don't know if I'd stay there with a smaller child.

Poly has the island theme, true story - the first time I stayed at a resort in Palau (an island in the South Pacific) the first thing I told my honey was "this reminds me of the Poly at WDW". He, of course, being cynical and having no sense of child in him, replied "possibly the Poly reminds you of this". Either way, they were very similar. The poly is very kid friendly and because of this, was my son's favorite MK resort when he was small. Without a small child, I wouldn't stay there as it can get loud in the public areas and busy.

WL is very close to AKL in is looks and feel. Very big and expansive and woodsy, it reminds me of the lodges in the mountains of north Georgia. Very kid friendly but not too over the top with noise and kids running around.

CR is very, well, contemporary. It has plenty of food options and great views of MK and a walking trail to MK, giving you one more option of getting there. For me, that is it's only advantage, the views and the walking trail. It is kid friendly and because the common areas are pretty open with high, high, high, high ceilings it can get very noisy. It's style is just to sterile and contemporary for me, it reminds me of a little more upscale Hampton Inn with good views.

If you are going to spend more time at Epcot/HS you can not beat the Epcot resorts. All three - BW, YC and BC are within walking distance of both. You have the option of the monorail to MK or the bus, there is a bus to HS and to AK. There are boats that take you to Epcot, the other resorts, Swan/Dolphin (which are also good options) and HS. My order of preference for those would be YC, BC, BW. I also enjoy Swan/Dolphin but if you are driving, sometimes it's can actually be less to stay at one of the Disney Epcot resorts since S/D charge a nightly resort fee and a nightly parking fee.

Yacht Club/Beach Club are for all practical purposes, one big resort but each has it's own facilities and own lobbies and a different feel. YC is darker and more adult feeling. There are kids there but it seems to be a little quieter and a tad more upscale than BC. All rooms at YC except for first floor ones will have a full balcony (I think there may be 2 or 3 that don't but those are the exception). It is due for an upgrade within a few months so if construction is a problem, it would be wise to stay away from there until well into 2017. It is my #1 favorite resort of all of them I've ever stayed at on Disney property.

Bach Club is done in lighter colors, the rooms mostly have the little Juliet balconies, there are some with the larger balconies but it's a crap shoot if you are going to get one. It is more kid friendly, thus it tends to be a little noisier in the lobby and has a more relaxed beachy feel to it. Both YC and BC share what is one of the arguably most kid friendly pools on property. All deluxe resorts have at least one quiet pool (I think AKL may not have one at Jambo house though)

Boardwalk has a sort of New England boardwalk vibe to it, I've found the front desk CMs can be the least friendly of the bunch, it's hit or miss. The rooms are a little lighter feeling than YC, it has the famous clown pool which will either freak you out or you will love it. There are no restaurants within the resort itself but a number of them along the boardwalk.

Honorable mention to Swan/Dolphin. These are not Disney owned properties but are on Disney property and do share some perks. You don't get MBs and can't charge back to your room and don't get ME but you can have your packages sent back to the resort and can book ADRs and FPs within the same time frame as a Disney resort and do get EMHs. They can be a great rate, similar to a moderate if you are diligent in your searches, take advantage of their discounts and aren't driving a car. They are convention resorts so tend to have adults dressed in business attire walking around and can have a more business feel to them but the rooms are good sized, well maintained, both resort share a main pool and both have their own smaller pools. The have some great food options.

If you like a little adventure and tend to spend more time in the resort than in the parks and love animals, AKL is the way to go. Arguably one of the most stunning resorts on property, it's big and airy and full of African themes. The food there is pretty good and there are loads of areas to view the animals throughout the resort. If you want to pay a little more you can get a Savannah view but frankly there are so many places to see the animals I don't know that I would. You do have to ride the bus to all the parks, including AK but it's actually closer to the parks than any of the moderate or value resorts so don't be fooled into thinking it's too far away. I would say if you plan on driving to the parks, AKL is the way to go. It is very kid friendly yet also has a great adult vibe to it.

Old Key West and Saratoga Springs are both DVC resorts but you can rent rooms through Disney at them. They don't have rooms, they have studios, 1,2 and 3 bedroom suites. Both are pretty large resorts and you can spend a lot of time on buses if you are in one of the farther away buildings. OKW is the oldest Disney DVC resort and feels like it. The rooms are huge and very homey feeling. There are a couple of smaller pools in the different villages and a big one at the main building. I haven't stayed at SS, I did visit it but I can comment to the rooms or the feel of the place.

Hope that helps.

If you are looking for a variety of TS options, I would recommend starting with the EP resorts (BWI, BWV, BCV, BC and YC. You can throw Swan/Dolphin in there as well). With the EP resorts you will have all of the resort TS, plus EP WS TS and even DHS TS within walking distance. Again, this is a GREAT option when you don't want to fold up strollers and head out on a bus to get a little variety into your vacation. We like the monorail resorts as well (and if you are planning a MK heavy trip, an MK resort may be the way to go), but for us, we always loved to go back to our resort in the afternoon and have some down time (or a nap when our son was younger) and then simply walk with the stroller in the evening to get dinner or walk around EP. Yes, you can get to other resorts via monorail, but honestly, after a while I got tired of waiting for any type of transportation. With the EP resorts, it's nice to simply stroll out of your room and have SO much within walking distance.

Lol!
Yes, this is so true.

My kids do love to eat out though and can be counted on to behave in a manner close to civilized. Sometimes sit down is easier with kids because you are all seated in one place all at once. No table hunting or relaying orders to dad waiting in line.

Anyway, back on topic...
if reducing travel time and hassle to MK I think the monorail resorts have a huge edge. I recommend this especially with young kids.
My favorite is the Polynesian because of the theming and I love that you can watch the fireworks from the beach.

Mine as well. But it's always worth noting that even if that's the case, what may have been 2 TS per day may fall to 1, or you may skip late dining due to witching hours, etc.

I would recommend an Epcot resort now before kids. I grew up staying at the Beach Club and now own DVC points at BWI and GF, but I prefer the Boardwalk over GF. I like knowing I don't have to rely on transportation for 2 of the parks. It is a 5-10 minute to Epcot and 15 minutes to DHS. If you want more table service options, Epcot resorts are great because you can walk to Epcot for a nice meal. Out of all the Epcot resorts, I would say the Yacht Club is my favorite. It is quieter than the Beach Club, but you still have a great pool to utilize. I honestly don't think you could go wrong with any of the Epcot resorts.

I own DVC at OKW and love both the interior and exterior décor. The rooms are large and you can park at your front door. This is a quite and laid back experience. All are major pluses to me. The main pool at the hospitality house has a slide and separate pool area for small children. Not as many food options as some other newer resorts, but Olivia's is very good.

We decided to rent DVC points and stay at Wilderness Lodge for our upcoming trip. People are reporting low crowds because half of the hotel is being converted to DVC rooms. The Northwest style is appealing, and riding a boat from MK will be nice.

Our last trip we stayed at the Contemporary. I had always wanted to stay there since I was a kid. It's not dripping with theming, but it has the retro-futuristic style that I grew up with. Being able to walk to MK was fantastic because my son was almost 3 at the time, so we were still using a stroller.

The view is hard to beat, too. We watched Wishes from our room every evening.

BC by a mile!!

For us:

Our stays at Contemporary were great because of the TPV rooms and you can walk to MK, but lacks theming and a "disney feel" other than Chef Mickey's.

Polynesian is great because you can walk to TTC which will take you to Epcot instead of transferring and I'm excited to be staying there for the first time.

GF feels to 'stuffy' and 'corporate'.

Lots of people seem to love Beach & Yacht Club and the sand bottom pools. For us thats why we stayed away from those hotels but I hear great things about both.

I would definitely go with an Epcot area resort. It is super easy to get to two parks and lots of amazing places to eat! We have stayed at them all and our favorite is the YC. It seems to be quieter in the lobby and we have had amazing service here. Right now it is being refurbished, so the rooms are going to be in top condition soon! Our favorite MK area resort is hands down the GF, however we only stay here for super short trips because of the cost.

The amount of time you spend on sit-down meals may decrease radically once you have kids. Just advance warning.

The kids in your fantasy life never end up being the ones that emerge from your genetic stock, somehow.

Holy cow, someone sew that on a pillow STAT!! Needs to be given to all expecting parents. <3

In reply to the OP, the only deluxe I've stayed at so far is CR and I really didn't like it at all. Trying AKL in December!

I'm a firm believer with young kids and deluxe stays, Bay Lake/Contemporary for proximity to the kingdom and fireworks from the hotel are essential. Kids can tire out by 7pm, but adults can still view night time fireworks from their room or outdoor viewing locations. Plus the nightly water parade. The Pool is basic and generic with a small splash pad and a simple slide. Monorail access to Poly and the Grand for additional dining, and a quick boat ride to Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness. You can also walk to the MK bus loop and take a bus to any other Disney hotel on property if you want to eat there. Try doing that at EPCOT resorts!

If you don't have kids try out an EPCOT resort for now. Lots of boardwalk nightlife and you can visit a lot of unique dining that is less kid friendly.

To add.
We stayed at WL. We loved it.
We are booked in at the Poly next. We felt a bit too, well, not the right kind of people for the GF, it seemed too formal for s with small children.
We are hoping that the Poly will suit us with the transport links and theming. We NEED the transport links this time, that's what swung it for us.

The only deluxe I've ever stayed at was BC and it was last month. We usually stay at POR and BC is now my absolute favorite resort. The pool is just amazing, for that alone I'd stay there. I really loved the proximity to 2 parks - walking to Epcot and taking the boat to DHS was so nice and convenient. Even the buses were great during our stay. The bus picks up And drops off YC first, but we never had crowded buses and never had to stand, like we do at the moderates. We love Cape May Cafe, and made sure to do both breakfast and dinner there since we were staying there. Cape May breakfast is fantastic! We loved the rooms.. they were very clean and mousekeeping had our rooms done in the morning when we left for the parks, so when we came back for our afternoon breaks they were done and ready. The whole atmosphere at BC is amazing - we made sure to walk around every night when we came back from the parks and just take it all in, and even made our way over to the Boardwalk.

When I was at WDW with a baby (on a Christmas trip :scared: ) we did a split stay at Poly and BCVs because I was determined not to have to lug our stroller onto too many buses. Poly was great for the theming and for getting on the monorail to MK and walking to the TCC to get to Epcot. BCVs were great for the pool (BCV guests can access SAB as well), and because we could walk to Epcot and the Studios. We skipped Animal Kingdom that year, so the only bus we had to take was to Disney Springs (DTD back then). Both places were great with a small kid, especially the Boardwalk area, because we walked over to Epcot every night for a nice meal.
