I got my dd the Kindle from BB (3G + WiFi, offers). What do I need to do for her to be able to get books on it? Do you just purchase them with a credit card, or are their gift cards for this? I want her to be able to get some on Christmas Day. Thanks for the help:thumbsup2

Once she has the Kindle set up, she can go directly to the Kindle store via her Kindle to make purchases. Or she can go to Amazon.com, select the books she wants, and choose where she wants them downloaded to (ie. her Kindle). You can use either a gift card or credit card for payment. If you want to make sure she doesn't go overboard with the spending, I suggest a gift card at first. :goodvibes

She will need an amazon.com account which she can set up ahead of time, but that might spoil the surprise. Not to worry, though...it should only take about 5 minutes to set it up on Christmas morning:).

You can buy amazon.com gift cards at a lot of places (Target, Walgreen's and CVS come to mind) and use those to buy the books. Most of the books are priced anywhere between $1 and $10, depending on what you want. There is also a large selection of totally free books. Many local libraries also offer Kindle books for check-out, but you have to check your library's website for that information.

I had bought several Magic Treehouse books and put them on my Kindle so my DD8 could read them. With this deal, I bought her a Kindle of her own. I opened it up today and registered it to my account. By doing that, I was able to transfer all of the kid's books and games to her Kindle and I can remove them from mine.

I only wish that they had the Wi-Fi version (no 3G) since I really don't want DD to access the amazon store without my knowledge, which she can do with the 3G.

How old is your DD? I would leave her on your amazon account or an account you can control if she is not very old. You can buy as many books as you want now. Leave the Kindle in the box no worries. When you turn it on Christmas morning and put the info in for your WIFI it will automatically load all the books you bought onto it.

I bought my Kindle and then started buying books by the time it arrived from Amazon and I turned it on. I had 5 books ready to go. There are several really good forums for Kindle owners. You can PM and I can give you the name or just google. Kindle boards. Have fun! Enjoy!

Many public libraries offer free downloads for Kindle books. You should definitely check into that and there are a lot of other ways to get free books as well to keep her busy.

If you set the account up with a credit card...it is very easy to order books. She wouldn't have to input any extra information, so be really careful there.

Quick heads up, lately a lot of Kindle books have gone to $12.99, $14.99, I think I even saw a $16.99 one the other day. Their way of getting around their promise of$9.99 new releases is "price set by publisher".

Thanks everyone for the help. My dd that I got this for is 21, so no worries there:goodvibes I just hate to use my cc for things like this. We had it tied to the ipod acct a while back, and then there was lots of posts of info being stolen so we only use ipod gift cards now. I think I will get a kindle gc for this too. Thanks for the Kindle boards info too. I will check that out:thumbsup2

price is set by publishers - they have banded together - and now Penguin publishing (publised The Help) have pulled their library lending books from overdrive for the kindle!

You can have it start as registered to your Amazon account. You can then buy her a book beforehand, that will automatically load to it, or do what my dad did when he got us all one last Christmas, and buy her a book of her choice Christmas morning. It is then super easy to deregister it to your account and reregister it to her own Amazon account, for future purchases.

There is a section on the kindle books home page that shows the top 100 free and bought books. If she clicks on there she can see what is available for free and download. I have found several new authors that way.

sorry, I got interrupted

For great information (altho it is muddled by all the Fire talk right now!)

Go to Amazon.com
under search - pick Kindle store - click on the "GO" button

under that Go Button, click on Discussions -
http://www.amazon.com/forum/kindle?_encoding=UTF8&ref_=sv_kinc_7

Then, look for "FREE BOOKS (+ date) a very nice, kind poster Happy Reader aka Joyce posts the Daily Free books!

also check out the thread Discounted books - I have found a slew of books this way! They all freely admit they get their information from other sources - usually from ereaderiq http://www.ereaderiq.com/

I started to explain about calibre - because you can get books (free and cheap etc) from other sources - one listed has been Smashwords.com - most in the format Kindles use, but if not - you can get a book on your computer than drop it into the "calibre" and then it will format it for kindle - so easy! Calibre also helps me remember the order of some of the books I like to read (For instance Twilight saga doesnt tell you which is first, so I'd change the title to 1Twilight - 4Breaking Dawn) so when I put them in my Kindle it helps remind me!

to learn all about calibre (well he does have a user manual) the forum http://www.mobileread.com/ or kindleboards tips tricks and troubleshooting forum...http://www.kindleboards.com/index.php

I have been lazy and just reading the links above - except for

ereaderiq.com!

So I went after I posted - and I love this site! All the current freebies - (some I hadnt seen before) as well as discounted books :cool1:

Pixel of Ink

http://www.pixelofink.com/

has a number of free or really cheap (.99) books every day. You can sign up for their daily e-mails. When you click to buy one it takes you to Amazon.com to complete the transaction. I gotten a number of books that I enjoyed this way.

That's not Amazon getting around the $9.99 price point, that is the big 6 publishers getting together and insisting on an agency model for ebooks. Amazon is no longer allowed to sell these books at Amazon's price point, they have to sell them at the publisher's price point.

Apple is the one who started the ball rolling on agency pricing so you can thank them for it.

When it first was implemented Amazon removed the books from their store in protest but a lot of customers complained and said they wanted to be able to purchase the books even at the higher prices.

It's more than that. It won't be releasing any new e-books citing security concerns, so it looks like it will be affecting more than the Kindle. Though yes they specifically said Kindle library books, too.
Penguin Group this week announced that it will temporarily stop releasing its new titles in a digital format and pull its books from Amazon's library e-book lending program due to security concerns.

Also, it's not just Penguin. From the article:
Simon & Schuster and Macmillan don't allow e-book library lending, the paper said, while HarperCollins limits library lending to 26 per e-book.

Thanks for clarifying all of that - I read just a smidge about the Penguin publishing earlier today - not enough to post about it, even though I did post and probably confuse some... it is disappointing though

(and I see you caught my spelling mistakes as well :confused3 :rotfl:)

It does make you want to go and just grab the books off the internet - but unlike when the music industry tried to get ahold of the Napster groups - the publishers are trying to contain the internet.
