I've got a goofy luggage weight question.

We have a 7:30am flight home June 5th, so I know we can't use RAC because DME will pick us up at around 4:30am.:headache:

It sure would be nice if I could somehow weigh our bags before we get to the check-in at the airport. I suppose there's no way to do that? I wonder if the RAC scales at AKL would be availible?? Probably not. It would be a pain (for us and anyone behind us waiting) if we got to check-in at the airport and find that a bag is overweight. I guess we'd have to stop the process, get out of line, go switch things around or lighten the load, then get back in line and try again. Are there scales you can use to check bag weight before you get into the check-in line?

I had a bad experience with an overweight bag checking in at Denver airport before and I'd sure like to avoid it again if at all possible.:rolleyes1

I bought a mini scale (luggage) at Bed, Bath & Beyond for about $10 (if I remember correctly) Works surprisingly well. It is a hook kinda thingy that you pick the luggage up by the handle with the hook. Put the luggage back down on the floor and the weight is still registered on the scale. As they say, easy, peasy. It is also light weight. Throw it in your suitcase for the return trip.:thumbsup2

Well I'll be, never knew they made such a gaget!lol I see a trip to Bed, Bath & Beyond in my future this morning!

That would probably even be more accurate than the old weigh yourself and then weigh yourself again whilst balancing yourself on the scales thing too! roflmao!! That's what I did to see what they weigh before we leaving to go...

Don't know which airline you are using but there are scales outside the Southwest Skycaps. we have used them before approaching the check-in counter and then moved thins around without affecting the others in line.

Also, they will weigh your bags at Baggage Services at the resort. You just have to pack early :rotfl2:

As the Previous Poster, my wife brought one of those portable bag weighers and it works fine. Seems accurate. The regular analog one was $10 on Amazon. They have a digital one for $30. I have seen them in Wal-Mart now. We typically fly Southwest (expect to Hawaii) so we spread everything over two free bags anyway.

Just occured to me that maybe you should call before you go to BB&B as I bought this about 2 years ago. Can't waste gas these days!! LOL

Willie, we're flying Delta. And indeed :rotfl2: on the packing early thing!:lmao:

Happy, I looked at BB&B online and they still list as having them there. I actually live real close to one so hopping over there this afternoon won't be a problem. (hopping, lol, got WDW on the brain!) They're $19.99 which sure beats $90 for overweight luggage! Ya never know how much extra weight those souvies will put on!

Thanks so much, both of you!

When they weigh your suitcase in the airport, they will tell you if one is overweight so you can attempt to re-distribute your stuff to get under the total. Of course, if that's not possible then knowing you are overweight before you get to the airport isn't going to help.

I got my luggage scale from Kohls. I haven't used it for real yet, just messing around with it in the house, but it is pretty neat. I am always paranoid that my bags are too heavy, so it seemed like a smart purchase.

Another vote for the luggage scale. We got ours at our local AAA office and we don't go on any trips without it. They are so nice to have since you can still move things around between suitcases if necessary before leaving the room. We always make sure we are a few pounds under the allowed 50 just in case the airlines scale is a little different. We haven't had any problems doing it this way. Much cheaper to buy the luggage scale than to have to pay the overweight charge.

You might find an unmanned ticket counter where the baggage platform was still alive, and be able to weigh your bag there.

You can use this as a second opinion to the hand held scale you bought.

If you are getting a luggage scale make sure that it is a digital read out that locks the weight so that one person can use it.
We have a luggage scale - however we bought it years ago and is the one with the needle that points to the weight. It requires two people to use it - one to hold the scale with the luggage and one to kneel on the floor to read the weight. (We are planning on replacing it with the digital one so that weighing the luggage can be a one person job).
We keep it in our carryon -that way we always have it with us when we travel.
It is so much easier to redistribute the items before you get to the airport.

I bought a luggage scale! It's the digital kind too. Our two pieces are 36 & 38 pounds so got plenty room for junk coming back...hopefully.

Thanks all!

This one works great !!

I've always noticed that if you can lift the bag up over your head and not fall over, it's almost surely under checkable weight.

LOL Not anymore with Spirit Airlines 41 pounds is heavy :rotfl2::rotfl2: Guess you could play catch with that one !

Scales are a great idea. I do not fly very often so I could use any tips (flown onced in the last 10 years). I told DH about the scales tip, his comment "just so they don't think your a drug dealer". Would not think a dope dealer that ways in tens of pounds wold carry a $10 scales in the suitcase, lol.

I really like the comment if you can lift it over your head, your likely fine. For me it would be "if I can lift it at all, I am fine, lol.

There is no tray per se, just handle, scale face, and hook. Show DH picture on BB&B website. Have never read of anyone having a problem. Your DH was probably kidding and now thinks I'm wacky. :rotfl2:
