I've Created an Unpredicted "Buzz" Over Being a DVC Owner

My synagogue is having a fundraising and an auction. I have donated points for 3 nights at OKW. The theme of the gala is Bella Notte, An Italian Adventure and I knew they were looking for good donations preferably with a travel theme. The gala dinner at an upscale Italian restaurant is in January as is the auction.

I can't tell you how many people have come up to me about my DVC ownership (how they knew I am the person behind the donation, I don't know). They are so surprised and facinated that I have a DVC membership!

"I wouldn't have thought you would ever even step foot in Disney World." Is the way it usually goes.

I'm surprised that they are so surprised. I think the organizing committee is also a bit shocked that they have a 3 night Disney resort to auction off.

Good for you, and good for your synagogue. I've often thought about donating some points, but haven't had an occassion to do so yet. Please keep up posted on how it turns out.

We did this for our son's Private high school once too. We donated 5 nights and someone else donated frequent flier miles for 4, and they packaged it together as the main auction item. I believe the school got about $3000 from it, and that was 8 years ago.

Just wondering did you pick the nights or season or limit the points in some way? I was considering doing it ...my vacation house goes for 1400 at auction and was thinking about something different.

In my donation, I included the restrictions, making it Sunday through Thursday, and I specified the time of year periods available for booking. I also specified that if the winner wanted to cancel they could do so up to 40 days before arrival (to allow for a bit of padding). The committee all felt that they were reasonable restrictions.

I was a bit perplexed when I had been thinking about it and as one DISer on these boards advised me, "They're your points, you can do what you want." That one piece of advice made it all fall into place.

The organizers also wanted a "brochure" so I created a tri-fold "brochure" they could have at the auction.
