You are only supposed to sit in the middle if the person you tagged actually catches you before you sit in his seat. If he catches you then you have to sit in the middle. Speaking of playground games does anyone remember Red Rover?

Dang it <shaking off my invisibility cloak> sorry, I posted earlier that I loved Red Rover....but I was invisible then so realize you must not have seen it LOL

Actually that was one of the games my grandparents taught me....so fun. My son said he played it the other day at school and that one kid about broke his arm so they all stopped playing LOL Kids are a bit larger today, and run with more force to actually 'hurt' the other side into letting them through.

Maybe it should be called something different now :)

I knew it too, but this game is so unfair to the slow runners. Ban it I say!!!! :teeth:

Yes, and Musical chairs probably needs a warning on it as well. I mean what if your child can't carry a tune and misses out on the chair because they don't realize the song stopped? Or how fair is this to all those bench makers out their, the chairs taking all the glory in childhood games.....who thought up all these horrible one sided games way back when. <sigh>

:lmao:

Well that's better. Now I can see you! LOL! I remember they banned Red Rover in our school when we started taking down kids we didn't like! LOL! It weas so fun!

But then there is no one to be it and the game would be over wouldn't it....
OK just read the rules.... so the "goose" will always be it even if they tag the "it" that made them the goose. OK so how is it fair for the goose to be it if they tag the other person?

Count me as another one that didn't know about sitting in the middle. We played it the way LadyBears describes it, only growing up in Minnesota, we called it "Duck, Duck, Grey Duck".

It was very creative - as you tapped the other kids on the head going around the circle, you'd say things like "purple duck, blue duck, grrr...een duck, pink duck, spotted duck, silly duck, ggg...oofy duck, GREY DUCK! And then take off running. With a little luck, you'd have distracted the Grey Duck kid with all the other names and get a good head start on getting back to your seat. ;)

OMG - you totally brought me back to my youth!!!!!! Thanks for that trip down memory lane!!

Yep, us crazy MN's - changing the name!!! What'll we think of next??

Yea, sort of like the dodgeball rage lately. That just doesn't look fun.....especially when they throw it with such force and you seem to be the 'chosen' one LOL

I don't think I ever seen anyone get caught,by the time you realize you were goosed then get up the runner is far enough around you never catch them....

They stopped letting us play dodgeball in Junior high. All the athletic girls (me) could run the fastest to the line, knock back all the balls, collect them, stand at the line and just bean the other team...... game over.

Been thinking of starting a thread on all these old games---& trying to remember the rules to them....somehow dd has found out about Mother May I & red light green light(don't know who told her about it---) but dh & I don't have a clue if we're playing them the right way or not since it's been FOREVER...

YEP! Loved playing Red Rover & Duck DUck Goose (& yep we had the mush pot too!)

ETA: OH my goodness looking at that website about games---this shure is gonna bring back some memories! MY poor kiddos are in for it now once I relearn all thr rules! :lmao:
I thought if you made it back to your spot, you were safe. If you got tagged, you were it & the original person was supposed to take the seat. How do you play when everyone is in the middle??
::yes:: That's how we all ways played it.

I seem to remember a slightly different version of "Duck Duck Goose" from my childhood. The rules were basically the same, but it was called "Saint, Saint Devil".
