I've always wondered -- what's the difference between a "mixed breed" and a "mutt&quo

Why are some dogs desirable as "mixed breeds" and others are just mutts?

And who gets to decide when a "new" breed is "invented"? The AKC?

There is no difference. A mixed breed is just a nice way to say mutt. I've known people that call a mixed breed a "Heinz"...like Heinz 57, because there are 57 different breeds probably mixed into the doggie. Doesn't make them any less cute or wonderful!!!!

I believe the American kennel Club is the "official" word on what are considered "recognized" breeds in the United States.

There is a difference. Mixed breeds are 2 breeds put together intentionally. Mutts are whatever breeds happen to connect and could include more than 2 breeds.

I don't know who gets to decide.

I don't think the AKC will ever recognize a ****-a-poo or a goldendoodle.
If they do, it will be all about the money.

Yes, I agree. A mixed breed is not purebred, but you can still verify what two breeds went into the "mix". A mutt is who-knows-what, after other who-knows-whats mate. LOL.

Regarding the cockapoo - that reminds me of an interview I saw with Ewan McGregor where he says that the mix should be called a "cockadoodle". Makes sense! LOL.
