They let DH go. He's been worried about it for months as they've gradually taken projects away. He went in this morning(over icy roads!) only to be canned at 7:30am. He has cleaned out his desk and is on his way home. I don't know what kind of severance they're offering; we'll have to look at that. Thank God I'm carrying the health insurance, although he will lose his life insurance. It's not the only life insurance we have, but it is the largest one (we can't get life insurance on him anymore, so this is a big loss.) Thankfully, he has his 401K and I have my own investments. We'll be okay. I need to start working full-time(blech!) Like I have enough hours in my day.

We've talked about this several times over the last few months, since he's been sick for so long. We're not surprised. In a way, it's a relief that it's over. :confused3 I don't know what he's gonna do. His health is too fragile for him to work full-time. Part-time work won't pay him nearly what he's been earning. He can't work outside or around chemicals or be on his feet for hours at a time. Hopefully, they'll put him on long-term disability. Interesting that they canned him 2 wks before yearly bonuses come out. :headache:

I haven't followed your posts enough to know, but what is wrong with your husband? You said he is sickly, just wondering.

I'm so sorry, Minkydog. I've been through it and I know what a scary place that is to be, but it's going to work out. You're in a good position with the health insurance and the investments, and that gives you a little wiggle room to figure out what's going to work out best for you. A year from now you'll probably look back on this and see how this situation sent you down the path towards a new life. You just have to get through the uncertainty right now, and gradually you'll figure it out.:grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

I'm so sorry to hear this. That's got to be a rough emotional blow, even though you were sort of prepared for it.

May I asked if you've tried for disability for Social Security. It seems as if he would be eligible.

So sorry to hear this. What's wrong with this world anymore. I hear nothing but bad news. I hope this work out for you and hopefully this get much better.

:grouphug: :sad1: I hope better times are ahead for you.

Is he possibly entitled to a prorated portion of his bonus? You need to find out! I worked for a company that tried to deny all "new hires" their bonuses the year that I started. About half of my new-hire group quit over this. The rest of us fought it, got the bonus, and then guess what...they had to send prorated checks for the bonus to the people who had quit!! Go after it, because it sounds like your DH worked there for the majority of the year that the bonuses were based upon!

I'm sorry to hear about your dh's job.

I'm so sorry.

Sorry to hear this. I've been there, and know how tough it is. Thank goodness you're able to carry health insurance where you work. Best wishes.

He has an auto-immune disease called sarcoidosis. Usually it's a pretty benign self-limited disease, but it has been very aggressive in him. He has it in his lungs(stage4, fibrosis), heart, joints and brain. The lung involvement is the worst--he only has about 40% lung capacity so he tires quickly. His stamina is limited and he takes 18 meds a day just to stay stable. Stress definitely makes everything worse. So far, DH has been ineligible for SS although since this happened, we may need to contact an attorney and see if we can pursue it more aggresively

Good luck, hopefully this will open another door for your family!

I'm sorry this is happening to you guys. I agree, you should apply again for the disability. :grouphug:

Oh dear, I didn't know your DH had sarcoidosis. Unfortunately I'm intimately familiar with that disease. :sad1:
Best wishes as you both figure out how to deal with the news of his job.......I too would look into whether he qualifies for a partial payment of the upcoming bonus.
Good luck!

saying a prayer for you and your family. i would also see about that bonus. he was there for most of the year, right? like others have said, at least you have the health insurance. i hope things turn out ok for all of you.

I am so sorry, minkydog. Is it possible to convert his group life policy to a personal one? I know that it is sometimes possible, but I don't know what kinds of underwriting questions they ask with a conversion.

Good luck to you and your family.

Denae

sorry to hear of this-you might want to check with his h/r and find out who carries the life insurance policy-some companies will give you the option to carry the policy on your own (think we got 30 days post loss of job to opt in).

btw-if you want some 'insider' (well now retired) info. on how to do the ss application give me a p.m.-i reviewed thousands of them for a program i administered for social services-so i'm familiar with how ss looks at and evaluates them. i can also suggest some free resources to pursue if it's denied vs. paying an attny. of chunk of your retro benefits.

hugs to you and dh.
