It's offical: New rules for WDW - DTD Pin Trading - Long read

If you don't mind me asking, what happened? I'm pretty new to the pin trading and would like to be well informed.

Hello, my name is Winnie, and I'm a "pinaholic". Welcome to the madness!
But mostly, welcome to the fun. And I'm not just talking about the pin trading, but the wonderful friends you make because of it. Many of whom are on this board!

In the last several years, there has become a trend at WDW DTD Pin traders area, that had really gotten ugly. Tables were not being shared, traders were "Sharking" other traders. In other words, taking advantage of those not as knowledgable of pin values and such. And then it got worse as some regulars and even some out of towners began to bring so much "stuff", that it began to look like a "pin flea market". And yes, one in particular dresses like a slob. YUK!!

So Disney execs, like Meg Crogton, along with the DL and WDW Pin Merchandiser, Steven Miller, decided enough was enough. So they made rules and are now enforcing them. Although if you read my original post, this 1 bag rule has been in place for 6 years. It was just never enforced. But thanks to a few stinkers, we now are all paying the price.

It's all still good, we can still trade. It's just a bit more challenging when the pin the other trader wants, is in your car or even worse at home. Bummer!
However, as you may have read in a prior recent post of mine, this same slob of a trader is finding sneaky ways to get around the new rule. Oh if only I could say his name!!! But I musn't. Bummer again!!

Please oh please don't let this shy you away from the hobby and trading. The majority of us are wonderful and would love to trade with you. The most simple rule, if you don't feel comfortable about a trade, just say a nice no thank you and walk away. You dreams pins will eventually find you!!

Thank you so much for answering my question. Our whole family has really gotten into the pin trading. Our 4yo DD absolutely loves it! She is really into getting the different series of HM or Cast pins. When we were there in January, we got 4 complete sets in 5 days. For a 4yo, I think that's pretty good! And she's got the best luck! She was missing 1 pin to complete a set and our ME bus was due to be at our hotel in 9 minutes. She asked if we could just take one more look in the gift shop to see in any of the CM's might have it. Don't you know there was 1 CM that had the exact pin she was looking for! I'm telling you.......we should have played the lottery that day. Anyway, when DH and I were there last month, we bought her a Tinkerbell pin bag for her to keep her pins in for her Birthday. I can't wait to give it to her. June needs to hurry up and get here!!!

Overall I would say that we've had good experiences with traders at DTD and in Epcot. The only really bad experience we had was with a trader at DTD about a year and a half ago. My daughter had found a pin that we wanted to trade for (nothing too exciting) and the trader told her in a very nasty tone that if she wanted to trade for it, that she would have to go into the store and buy 2 specific pins that he wanted. My DH immediately told them "no thanks" and walked away.

Well, many people display their traders in a "pin bag" which you can purchase at Disney. or some display them in notebooks on their original cards in pages you would put baseball cards in.

In either case, you may now only have 1 displayed on your table. I have seem some trying to stretch things now by wearing multiple lanyards. And yes, it is the same character I referenced in my original post. Last saturday, he brought his daughter. That way he could have 2 tables with 1 book each. He bragged to another trader thahe had over 4200 pins between both books.

Here's the "kicker"! He was trading out of both bags. His daughter was only there as a reason to have another table with another bag. I realize some of you would say, so what? But you just don't understand, this is a person who will do whatever he can to take advantage and stretch the rules to his advantage. He is such a "player", and that is putting it mildly!!

I for one plan to let anyone who will listen, know what kind of a trader he is. And the same for others like him. This way, I figure, we can perhaps weed out the bad traders, and hopefully chase them out of their seedy business. For instance this same character is known to have unknowing new type traders, go into the DTD Pin STore and buy him 2-3 LE pins for one of his stupid HM pins that we all know will be on e-bay for 99cents in about a month. It disgusts me, can you tell.

I don't care how new or "HTF" a HM pin may be. Unless it is a much older one that you can no longer find, I trade my HM easy. Just give me another HM for mine.

Everyone, just please be careful. This characters is an obese guy who likes to wear cut off muscle shirts and stretch shorts with sandals. And he has an italian flag tatoo on his upper arm. BEWARE!!

There's an individual at DL who is just like this. Very different physically but the same pin trading wise. This man takes his "adopted" (really more like fostered from a family in China) daughter out of school to go pin trading with him!!! Makes me sick. We refuse to trade with him.....he's always trying to wheel and deal. I've been known to tell someone who has just headed into the store to make a purchase for him not to do it, that we have the same pins and we will just do a trade with them without any extra requirements. Heck, I've been known to laugh at pin traders who tell me "go in the store right there and buy me this and I'll trade you that". I kind of laugh a little and say "no, I will not go buy you a pin, if you want it you go buy it" and walk away. LOL

Great thread! I too have encountered this "slob" and didn't know of his reputation until this thread-good to know! I remember this cute little boy asking to trade for a Mickey pin. He had a cutie he wanted to trade for it (this kid was so cute) and you could tell he had like JUST started pin trading. Well this "jerk" said, no, I don't want that pin. And this kid was just flabbergasted and looked so hurt. I just absolutely HATE it when people do this. At least be kind and thoughtful if you say no..geesh.

Also, one note. I've noticed on our last pin trading night @ CR that some of the people there were very rude. We got right off the plane and headed over there (literally, plane landed @ 6 and party started @ 6:00). There were no tables, so we were just looking for a place to sit. My boys innocently sat down at a table, and the couple there LITERALLY said "Uh, you can't sit there, how do you expect anyone to look at my book!" (very snotty). I was like..OH NO you did not! I looked at the woman, and explained that my children were just looking for a place to sit down, and they didn't intentionally try to block the view of her books. And if she could take into consideration that children do occasionally sit down unaware it causes a problem, the easier solution would be to take into consideration that they are children, and ask or explain in a kind way instead of spouting off a snarky and rude response. Needless to say, this woman looked at me like without a word to add.

I then asked my boys to stand up and explained why we needed to move. I also commented to her that we had looked forward to this event for months, came here right from the airport, and are avid pin traders, and told her that her comments and attitude ruined the entire experience for us (which it did-boys just wanted to leave); she didn't much care to be honest. That said, I hope this was an isolated incident and we will be at the next one in June.

Not boring at all, it was very interesting.

You could have paused, looked at one of her pins, said "Oh, that's a nice one, what would you take for it?" And if she replied with a certain pin, then you could have said "Oh, I'm lucky enough to have TWO of the pin you want." and walked away

I've actually done that or something similar a time or two. I'll walk up to a trader, they won't want anything on my little lanyard *and* they'll be rude about it. Then DH comes along & they really want one of his and we just say "No. Sorry." and walk away.

LOL Agnes, we have done that as well. I wear my lanyard, DBF wears one but he also carries a book that is full of traders. It is very satisfying to be able to tell someone who was just quite rude to you (even going as far as to tell you that EVERY pin you have for trade is fake, uh huh, ya sure) that you won't trade with them. Even better was the time I was looking at the "fake lady"s pins (we call her that because she tells us EVERY time we see her that our traders are all fakes, unless they are the brand new series release for the month, we are DL traders) and I saw one that I knew had several version of scrappers, I asked very politely if I could please remove the pin from her book and she said yes so I did. I turned it over and yup, it was a scrapper. So I told her it was bad and she got very offended that I would tell her that, got very snippy and snarky about it and said "well, I'll to do my OWN research because I'm sure MY info is better than yours". Ok, sure lady. The Evil Queen is going to have a backstamp that says "Disney/Amlin" on it. LOL Whatever.....we just avoid her now, we look at her pins but rarely do we ever ask to trade.

It's not surprising that all of the tables were taken up because the pin traders usually arrive an hour before Pin Trading Night starts and wait in line until the doors open, so when they do that the tables get taken very fast. So if you ever do trade again at the Contemporary that's something to remember and I am sorry you ran into that rude person.

Wow. As someone just barely starting to get my feet wet with disney pins- and only because I am prepping for my first ever trip to DL- this whole pin trading drama is a bit unsettling. To those doing it as a fun hobby(as it should be) please do not be offended-but, I guess what I don't understand is why a bunch of adults turn into little ornery children over a piece of medal. It reminds me of the beanie baby craze- all these grown ups buying up little stuffed animals left and right- and did they end up being able to fun their retirement with them- um no. Its not going to happen with disney pins either- People need to remember why trading pins started in the first place- a fun way to connect with other people who are also having fun at the happiest place on earth! In my opinion, the hobbiest traders are the ones who will need to police the bad guys- you who are there regularly doing it for fun, not so you can get a nice pin and sell it on ebay for a profit- you guys have the power to make trading a postitive experience for people. Tell disney CMs when traders are asking people to go buy them pins in exchange for another, do what you can to get those particular people banned from trading- see if you can convince disney to post guidelines that specificly say it is not ok to ask potential traders to purchase pins for them, have them post signs that say "no sharks" or something...Anything that will help beginner traders, and the general public who are just there for fun not get hurt, and keep it an enjoyable experience for everyone. I can't tell you how gla i am that i have been reading these boards so much over the last few months. I have never been to a disney park in my whole life, and am getting ready to take my 8yo son on the vacation of our lifetime. The trip will be fun, and we will do some pin trading, but it will only be with cast members, or other children- as I don't want his trip ruined by some idiot that is out for blood over a cute piece of disney memorabilia.... Things will eventually police themselves- either by disney not allowing it at all, or people will larn who the bad traders area, an run them out themselves. I go to horse tack auctions and there is a buyer who always brings alot of his stuff, and bids the price up- he started speaking out about a lot of his own stuff when it would come up on the block, and people started figuring out what he was doing- they saw him bidding up his own stuff, and would stop bidding- eventually, he was stuck buying so much of his own stuff, it was not worth him bringing it- and if he is there, people are cautious of bidding. It takes the fun out of it if people are too serious. Sorry this was so long, lol...

My DD were getting ready for a trip to WDW in 2002 or 2003. We made a stop @ the Disney Store & they had pins on clearance for $0.50. I bought a bunch of them to trade w/ CM. We'ld heard about it, but never done it before. WE had so much fun & ended up trading the entire trip. My DD & I love to collect pins. WE collect pins that we love, not b/c of there value, etc. And b/c of this we only trade w/ CM. WE don't want to hear that our pins are junk, etc. Before each trip we go through all of our pins & decide which ones we want to let go. Its been really neat to see my DDs collection transform over the years. We are still working w/ the same inital # of pins we started w. The ones we buy are to commenerate something special.

I've only had an encounter w/ 1 pin trader & it was amazingly wonderful. A true Magical moment. My DS was 4 months old & we were waiting for DD to finish up on a ride. So, we started looking at a trader's book. I'd never seen someone w/ so many pins before. We were chatting about what we liked to collect. I collect Walt & Mickey & each resort we stay in. DD collects Donald & cuties. We had a wonderful chat & I was getting ready to go meet my DD. WE say our good-byes, the trader hands me a Donald pin for DD & a "My 1st Pin" for my DS. It was very special. I took my DD back to say thank you, but she was gone. If that was any of you please PM me. The kids still have those pins & won't trade them. Thank you for making a magical memory for me.

Yes, it's a "piece of medal" but that's not the point. The point is that I'm buying good quality rack pins for $5 and up and in return I'm getting scrappers....not fun and let me tell you it's not fun to explain to your child why the pin they thought was so great is a piece of junk and broken. Yes, we trade for fun, we've met many wonderful people trading. No, we try not to take it seriously and remember that it's for fun but it's hard when one person tells you everything you have is junk. Especially when you know for a fact it's not. It's extremely upsetting to run into "that" person. And yes, those of us who are able to go regularly do try to police others but telling CM's doesn't have much effect, these traders simply go the next spot and trade there. The point of these threads to educate newbies to trading, so they can avoid the sharks and avoid feeling like they were "taken" while trading.

DBF and I love sharing our pins with kids and we are so sad that so many parents usher their kids past us without even stopping. I remember one trip we were waiting for our girls to get off CA Screamin' and a young girl was looking at our books (we do carry at least one thru the parks most days) and our lanyards and we chatted with her for a little while, she was so sweet and she really liked our pins. She said "My Mom bought me a lanyard but I don't have any pins to trade, but if I did I would trade with you because you have such pretty pins" so DBF and I both pulled off a few pins she had been admiring and gave them to her. She was reluctant to take them because she didn't have anything to give us back but we weren't interested in trading, we just wanted to gift her. Her Mom just about cried when she realized what we were doing and the little girls told us she would never ever trade them away, so of course we had to give her a couple more so she could have traders! lol She left probably 6 pins richer but the gratitude and good feelings stayed with us for a long long time. Not all traders are bad people, don't let the actions of the few dictate your impressions of the many.

Anyway, I have a nice collection started, and I have not even been to DL yet. The pins I have boughten I purchased as individuals, and paid a decent price for each one. I bought them because they struck my fancy, and when I got them in the mail, I knew there would be no chance of trading those pins, and that I am hooked. I plan on doing what I can as a newbie an a parent to keep it fun for my son and my self though- an not let it ruin our trip... These threads have been very helpful to this newbie..

Honestly, if someone were to tell me my pins were junk, I would smile nicely at them and say "well bless your heart" and just walk away...I am good at letting things roll though, and I know alot of people aren't. I also like to get even-Perhaps an "accidental spill" of a tinkerbell twist on a rude traders pin collection might be in order, lol... "OOPS"! Anyway, I have a nice collection started, and I have not even been to DL yet. The pins I have boughten I purchased as individuals, and paid a decent price for each one. I bought them because they struck my fancy, and when I got them in the mail, I knew there would be no chance of trading those pins, and that I am hooked. I plan on doing what I can as a newbie an a parent to keep it fun for my son and my self though- an not let it ruin our trip... These threads have been very helpful to this newbie..

That's exactly what I do when we run across "that" person. lol She tells us we have crap so I smile and say "thank you" and leave. I did have a major moment of satisfaction once tho and I'm not ashamed to admit it. She had a pin in her trader book that in known to have scrappers so I asked if I could see the back of the pin, she said yes so I popped it out and turned it over. Sure enough it was a scrapper (the backstamp was totally incorrect) and I said "Oh no, I sure hope you didn't trade anything very good for this, it's fake!" and she snatched it back from me and demanded to know what I was talking about, I told her "well, the backstamp is wrong, that particular pin should only say copyright Disney not copyright Disney/Amblin (it was a Jessica Rabbit and many of those have the dual copyright), that's the one that's only on the Jessica pin in that set". I told her to check pinpics and she said she would, then as I was walking away I saw her put it back in her book!! So who knows what she did with it......and yes, it was very gratifying to be able to tell her that. lol I know it's petty but it still felt good.

This is not a story about finding out I had a scrapper pin, however it's about something telling me a specific pin I was trading was a horrible and a piece of crap when I was not even talking to this person. Anyway back in 2003 I was still new to Pin Trading because I had only been collecting and trading for 1 year. So I was at the Magic Kingdom waiting for Scoop's pin talks to start and I mentioned to someone there I was trading an extra Disney Weclome Center 15th Anniversary pin, because the day before I bought an extra one at their location in Ocala, Florida. Well out of the blue I hear ths woman say don't trade for that pin it's horrible and a piece of crap, but the funny thing is I told her I was not trading it at that time and I was just telling someone I was going to try and trade it. Well I don't think she cared what I had to say, however a few days later when the Contemporary was hosting Mickey's Pin Trading Night I was able to trade the pin and I see that same woman and I told her I traded that pin and walked away. Well I must say I felt good about telling her that and hopefully she had stopped giving her opinion when she was not part of the conversation.

thanks for that bit of info. I am a new trader, well pin collector. I dont know if I will be trading pins or not. I have found my self collecting them though. I am becoming atticted. But I am sure my kids are going to want to trade theres just for the fun of it. I will be sure and stay away from his table.
By the way what is a hm pin?
