These are pictures of the devestation of 10 inches of rain in 8 hours here in a small area of New Hampshire....these particular are within view of my house..literally 2 minutes of a drive

These 2 are of the same bridge, within about 45 minutes of eachother...

The City of Keene.....40% of the city as of 8pm is still under water, including my xbil's gold's gym!

5075815.jpg

to the left, behind that brick building is the shopping center that Gold's is located in...

5075802.jpg

roxbury is about 2 minutes outside of keene

5075873.jpg

5075814.jpg

the majority of people effected in this area, are Keene State College kids....most of which do not live in Keene, except for during the school year. Notice the out of state plates..

5075874.jpg

this is a new car dealership- chrysler/dodge/jeep

5075885.jpg

5075893.jpg

the name of that pizza place is "pizza down under"....they might want to change it to pizza under water

5075897.jpg

that's a beverage distribution building..those overhead doors usually have 18 wheelers backed up to them to give you an idea of how much water is there

5075901.jpg

this is a parking lot for those keene state college students that live on campus

5075914.jpg

this is hinsdale nh about 30 minutes south, a road gave way- collapsing the house

5076104.jpg

claremont NH 30 minutes north

If you made it this far, my XBIL who owns the gold's was evacuated from his house- on a lake in Stoddard, NH this morning at about 4am, he awoke to police on a loud speaker, he had 1/2 hour to get anything he could out of his house, he was able to take his 74 'vette and his snowmobiles out of his underwater garage and up to a friends house on higher ground while his wife and son went to a local motel with one of the cars. He went back home and got his truck and they are now in the hotel. he spent the day at Gold's trying to salvage what he could, and then attempted to get to my X's business, but the roads to there are closed. There is a river that runs behind literally 20 feet from my X's business, and he is sure that his store is under water...but they can't get to it yet. XBIL has no idea if his house is still standing or if it's now in the lake.

Schools are cancelled for tomorrow all around Cheshire County, and the Govenor has declared a state of emergency, the National Guard are moving in overnight, there is still 4-5 people missing from Alstead- the 1st couple of pictures- and they will go door to door tonight....Alstead, given its population was the hardest hit, even though Keene looks to have more widespread damage....The govenor of NH is on his way back from Germany...

Sad Sad Sad...

Wow! Those are incredible pictures.

:earseek: .

Dumb question--was this a regular flood zone?

We're not in a flood zone--but after seeing what Katrina could do--we ordered flood insurance and it is now in place.

Those are very impressive pics. Hope your home is okay.

Brandy, did the entire region get flooded? I'm freaking out...my parents and sister spent the night there at a house they own last night.

It really was all above the flood plain. Most of New Hampshire and Vermont have small rivers and streams as town boundaries if that makes any sense....the states are just lined with them down here..

According to the "experts" it was a combination of the 10 inches of rain in 8 hours, and the rain we had preceeding that on Friday. The devestation in Alstead, was aggrevated by a dam that gave way...

Literally 100 feet from my house is the Connecticut River, and just about 300 yards south is the Hydro Dam that was released to prevent major flooding north of me...unfortunatly the bridge you see collapsed, is south about 1 mile down the river, and it actually is a smaller river that goes into the CT...the smaller river was flooded by the dam collapse (not the dam by my house) and when the CT river water was released it backed up that smaller river, and down came the bridge.

2 years ago, Cheshire County was hit very hard by a early spring snow/ice/rain storm that collapsed numerous roads...1 of them still being rebuilt as we speak, I wonder how that held up

Your pictures are amazing! Best of luck to you. Despite the water, it looks like you live in a beautiful area of our country.

I have to admit, I did get a twisted chuckle from the pizza parlor that is now "down under".

where are they?

Keene & Alstead has the most damage....Alstead they are calling "ground zero". Mostly it was small rivers/streams that caused the damage. The downtown of Keene is fine, where as if you draw a circle around it, the outlaying areas were affected- mainly the Asheulot River

ETA - The town where the house is is definitely flooded. I just found it on Boston.com. There was a fatality there from a washed out bridge. I don't even know where there IS a bridge there (or was).

A bit outside of Newport, but right on the water. I can't get in touch with them, and they should be back at their other house by now. I hope that they didn't get flooded.

The main road into their town is listed under "road closures". How could the PD get in? I am going to try to get in touch with another family member now. If she hasn't heard from them, I'll call the police.

even with the road being closed, they can get in, either via heavy equipment trucks, or via boats....I know they closed route 11, but you can still pass it....

let me know if I can do anything....i'm about 40 minutes from newport

We're from southern NH, though the more south eastern part (near Manchester). We spent last night at my grandparents' in the northern part of the state and woke up to one of their friends calling begging us to turn on WMUR, to make sure we still had a home to go back to. Our area was unaffected, thank god, but those couple of minutes, knowing that the National Guard had been deployed and areas were flooded and not knowing exactly where, were pretty scary.
The ride south along 93 was amazing (not in a good way either); the Pemigewasset was moving soooo fast, and places where you can't normally see the river at all were right next to the road. The exit off the highway to Plymouth State was partially underwater, and the fields around there were under serious water as well. The Winnepesaukee River in the Tilton area was moving really fast too.
My RA at school is from Newport, and went home this weekend. I'm concerned about whether he will be able to make it back to school, and whether he, his home and family are ok. A friend of mine at school is also from Newport; she stayed at school this weekend, but I have no idea about the state of her home and family either.
The almost non stop coverage of the flooding is a little unnerving. I've never seen anything like this, and although we're lucky to live on the side of a mountain, so really only at risk of ever having our basement flooded (hopefully), it really makes you think. All these road washouts are bad too. Paving season is practically over. The snow will be flying soon. How are they going to get these roads repaired to any type of driving condition (even the bare minimum) before winter? And how are they going to get the dam breaches repaired before the spring thaw?

Our roof started leaking last night. We had some drippage into our upstairs bathroom! Now we need to call a roofer to patch the roof.
Yup definately too much rain too fast last night.

They're OK! I was just able to contact them at their house finally. Thank you so much for your offer, though. I was really worried there for a few minutes. Apparently they were aware of some localized flooding, but they had no idea how bad it was because they don't have access to the internet up there. Good grief. They were planning to drive out through Newport or Keene tomorrow. I don't know if either will be an option from the looks of it, though :confused3 Apparently they tooks some pictures of the washed out roads nearby today, thinking that it was "interesting". I guess that they didn't know what a big problem the state was having!

I'm relieved. Leave it to them to have no clue that the entire region is flooded out, though :rolleyes2

Wow! I've been to Keene numerous times and it's a pretty area. Sad to see all that damage. :(

I can't believe there was that much flooding that close to where I live. My thoughts and prayers are with the people in that area. My family and I were at a party on Lake Monomanac yesterday in southern NH and we saw news trucks heading toward Keene on our way home. We saw the news stories but we still had no idea it was that bad. My DD's best friends's grandmother lives in Keene. I'll call today to see how they are doing.
