It's DINING, not Dinning

I'm in the "leave it alone" camp when it comes to misspelling, unless it affects the meaning. A while back someone asked if he or she could be "glutton free" (most likely meaning gluten-free) at Disney. Someone finally posted something along the lines that going gluten-free is possible, but attempting to be glutton-free would probably lead to a sad experience.

Dining is what you do when you eat a meal. Dinning is what you do when you make a loud, unpleasant and prolonged noise.

Can we make this a sticky?
The one that really bugs me is when pepole use the word sat instead of seated. For example a number of posters will say "We were sat as soon as we checked in" or "We were sat at a table for four but there were only two of us". Maybe it's a regional thing to use the word sat instead of the word seated but it just sounds weird to me and I don't think it is grammatically correct to use the word sat in this way.

Just get it all over with at once. Me and my husband had a grate dinning experience when we were sat at a window table even though we just wanted to order a desert.

I agree, shouldn’t be petty on this friendly community board. Tongue in cheek here... can move this thread to the games board and call it, Grammatical Pedantry Syndrome Add One:

I don't think there's anything wrong with a little spelling education. If this is a friendly forum, it may prevent the person from being embarrassed in a less friendly place. I've seen much meaner things on the internet than that. By the way, my pet peeve is using defiantly or definately for definitely. I'm not sure how those got started; neither even comes close to looking correct.

I can let that one go, but not this one that is over and over on here ..............

SAVANNA - a woodland grassland ecosystem = at AKL and AK - a view you book

SAVANNAH - a city in Georgia = NOT at Disney World - booking there is in another state

You're that upset over a typo?
I'm sure people understand that there is only one n but sometimes when you are typing fast or on a phone/tablet stuff happens.

I have been on these boards for close to 10 years and have never seen anyone spell it "dinning" And if I did, I would certainly know what they meant and not complain about it, let alone start a thread about it! WOW.

I agree. It can be annoying to see people spell things wrong at times but I would never call them out. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. :(

Others have seen it misspelled on an almost daily basis (do a search, you'll be shocked), and are bothered enough to start a thread. People are different; it doesn't make them bad. No need to pass judgment (or is it judgement)?

I hope the whether is good when I go to my dinning. I hope they have good desert.

Ok since we are on the subject, my pet peeve on the boards is “ I am/was wanting”. It’s “I want” or “I wanted”. Where the heck did the extra verb come from?????

I've been on these boards for 12 1/2 years and over the past few years have seen "dinning" many, many times, especially when people are anticipating free "dinning" or have questions about the "dinning" package. Just start scanning the recent restaurant threads and you will see examples. I'm not complaining about anything. Simply clarifying the definitions of "dinning" and "dining". I'm sure no one wants to misspell it and since dining is such a big part of these threads, why not point it out? Yes, it's a pet peeve and it appears many others on this board share my irritation.
