So glad that there were no injuries and further damage.

Make sure that you tell your insurance company about your upcoming trip that you were to use the camper. They may cover the cost of a rental unit for you to use if things cannot be worked out in time.

Here's where we're at right now - The RV place said it's a definite total. The insurance company wants an estimate written out even though it is a total, and the RV place said they're not taking the time to write out everything that's wrong with the camper since everything's wrong with it unless someone pays them, which will be about $200. My DH just left a message for our insurance guy to see what can be done. The adjuster is scheduled to go look at the camper tomorrow, so hopefully we'll have the official "totalled" from the insurance company. They're going to go look at DD's car sometime this week too, but the camper is my biggest concern right now since our trip is getting here so quickly. I'll keep all my DIS campers updated! Thanks for all the support...I'm a "little" stressed right now!

Is the RV place that has your wrecked camper, the same place you will buy your new one from. That would seem to be incentive for them to take a few minutes and help you out with a written estimate?????

Nope, the insurance company had us tow the camper to a RV place closer to home. We found a camper that we loved at another RV place. We talked to the insurance company last night, and they said that the RV place that is storing our camper and looking at it will be compensated for everything. I was feeling a little guilty for them taking care of my camper until they get it hauled away! They're looking at it today, so hopefully we'll know something soon!

Luv2Camp......I have sent you a private message that may help you deal with your insurance company if they start hassling you about the value of your camper. Had to deal with insurance adjusters about 5 years ago when our camper was totalled.

You're welcome. I understand the stress, but it will all work out in the end. Just send me a PM if you have any questions I can answer that will help if you have any problems. Remember that the insurance company is not necessarily your friend. We have a great insurance company for dealing with our vehicles and they were really good with the truck we totalled at the same time as the camper. Loss comparison is pretty simple when you are dealing with stock vehicles, but not so much with a camper. They just didn't have a clue when it came to an RV.

Well, we're done negotiating DD's car, and I'm very satisfied. They haven't contacted me regarding the camper yet, but hopefully I'll hear from them tomorrow. We leave in 25 days, so the clock is ticking!!!

Well, we're making progress! It's going to take a few weeks to settle on the old camper, so we're just going to have to let that go through the proper channels. We were approved for a loan on the new camper, so we go pick that up Saturday! We still get to go to the Fort in three weeks!!!!! Thanks, everyone, for the nice words the past few days. I know these were only material things, which wasn't the important thing. Losing a vacation with my DD (she'll be 18 this year, so our camping days with her are probably numbered) and my parents (my mother's health isn't very good) is what I didn't want to lose. Now we can go make some more magical memories!

Well, I spoke too soon. The insurance company called this evening and said that the camper isn't "officially" totaled. He said the RV place said that there will be over 100 labor hours to fix it ($10,000 for labor), all new appliances, new cupboards, a new roof/ceiling, a new wall with the door...And that's just by looking at it without writing up a formal estimate. He said the reason he can't give me an official "total" is because he's waiting on someone to call him with the value of the camper. He said I should be safe picking up our new camper on Saturday, but he wouldn't go as far as to tell me that it's definitely totaled. DH said that he thinks we're safe, but I can't even imagine if we picked up the new one and then found out the old one is going to be fixed. OK - I'm officially stressed again!

I'm no expert, but I don't think the insurance company value of your TT will exceed the cost of all the labor and materials you described above. Even without the labor estimate, it needs some MAJOR items. New roof, new wall...I mean, those are pretty significant (and expensive!) items on an RV. I would be shocked if they don't total it. But, I'd be reacting the same way as you if I were in your shoes....worrying until I get the check in my hands. But I bet it works out ok and you will be at the Fort as planned, in your new TT.

Well, not knowing your personal situation a lot will depend upon what you may or may not owe on the damaged RV. If you still owe money on it, you don't want to find yourself in a situation where your settlement would be less than what you still owe. Use the information I sent in the PM so that you can be proactive when they come back to tell you what the value of your camper is. You want to make sure that they have covered everything that adds value to it. With everything that you state will need to be replaced plus the labor costs, I simply don't see how the insurance company will come out ahead in this situation. If the numbers are close between fixing it and totaling it and it would be to your advantage to total it, try to negotiate something with your insurance company.
