It's a Merry Engaged Christmas! - 11/10-16 DxDDP! 12/8 Grand Floridian Cafe - Lunch

I am so in! And Congratulations on your Engagement :yay:

I know EXACTLY how you are feeling about waiting to book. We can book on December 12, so I am like counting down the days, even though they have that 16 month "hold" thing in place right now. We choose the Pavilion and right no GF for a cocktail hour and reception...but I am back and forth on moving to an Epcot dinner w/Illuminations. Better make up my mind and convince the man soon! Anyway, looking forward to the Cali Grill review. Going back there in May and can't wait. I hope there was sushi involved in your dinner so I can drool over the pics.

joining in. I know its the food section but glad you liked CSR b/c we are staying there for our first time in a few days. I requested for Casitas 4 (crossing my fingers we get that location)

Cant wait to read more yummy reviews.

I'm in. Can't wait for the rest of your reviews!! Glad you loved CSR, we stayed there last summer in Casitas 4 and loved it!!!

Joining in on the fun! Don't party w/o me!:cool1:

Sorry you didn't dig POFQ. It's our favorite, but it was looking a little shopworn last time we were there. Can't wait to see the re-dos when they're done.

OK--back to food!

OMG! First of all, we share the same first name...spell it the same and everything! I've only ever seen our name spelled with 2 "e's" one other time! :cool1:

Congrats on your engagement!

And can't wait to read the rest of your reviews too! ;)

that's pretty rare! thanks for joining in!!

OK--back to food!

yay! i would like to give it another try after the refurb--i think the place just needs a little love.

Okay... well first of all-- Happy Thanksgiving!!

I didn't make it home to Pittsburgh for the holiday, so I'm pretty much hanging around here since there's no crazy family hooplah here. We're actually going to Cracker Barrell (which I worked at for a year when I was 19 :sad2:). Not exactly festive like my crazy cooking, baking, you-better-eat-everything-we-made-or-we're-going-to-keep-badgering-you, 100% Italian family.

So I'm so excited to do the California Grill review!! It's coming right up!!

I separated this into 2 parts since I was afraid of this poofing :cutie: CG is really an experience... so I wanted to break it all down.

So here we go! We were on a super excitement high after we changed rooms and loved CSR. They gave us a coupon for complimentary drinks at the Laguna Bar to celebrate our engagement. How nice!! So after we prepared for dinner, we took our less than 2 minute walk to the bus stop and the bus for the MK came right up. Luck! We took the monorail over to the Contemporary and when we got there I realized I was confused. I hadn't been to the Contemporary since probably 1995. After I outgrew the Chef Mickey thing... we just didn't go over there. Writing this.. I'm puzzled as why after so many trips I haven't been there in 15 years?? I guess you don't pay attention to where you're going when you're in a stroller, or when you're tagging behind your family. I knew one thing about getting to the CG--you had a to take a special elevator--but where do I get to this sacred vessel? We were early since we hit luck with transporation so we had some time to figure this out. I had always heard the arcade was great at the CR... and wow is that true!! We really like to play arcade games and we were pretty impressed with the place :) Then we took a walk thru the shops, asked about how in the world we get to the CG and they direct us down another floor to check in. I felt dumb, but not really--it was kind of hidden for me, and I had been there 10 times in my life. Grant you my only memories of the place included mickey waffles, bacon and characters interrupting my meal.

So we make our way down for check-in. When I booked this dinner at 7:45, the fireworks were scheduled for 9pm. They were changed to 8pm so this time was an epic fail. Every person in line to check in was asking for a window seat. So when I checked in wearing my "just engaged" button, I hung my head and told them that if somehow there was a window seat was available, we would love one. I knew this would never happen, but I decided I'd try. We were escorted up the famed elevator to the CG. We were given a buzzer and were told that we could venture anywhere thru the inside or outside viewing area and the buzzer would still work. So I decided to go exploring. I was pretty sure I wanted the Napa Room for my wedding reception. I wanted to see where it was, and were the shared restroom was for our guests. So I checked it all out. The Napa room was locked, but I got to see the amazing locaton and where the potty was and I was rather pleased. So then I wanted to show him the outside and where we would take pictures. I had only seen pictures of this... but when we stepped outside and saw the view--we were both blown away. Wow. I mean, the view is breathtaking. As long as the meal was good--our reception was set. So it's after 7:45, it's 7:55---newsflash--we're not getting a table until after fireworks. Everyone with an earlier reservation had set up camp and had no plans to leave until after Wishes. I can respect that--kinda, lol.

IMG_0202.jpg

Being that we're adults, we use the time during fireworks to jump right on rides, to exit the park peacefully and dodge crowds in transportation. We have never stopped and watched Wishes from beginning to end with the music. So it started, and I can not explain the view, the music, the intensity--it must be the best view in the whole world. I totally understand how people tear up during this, because I am now officially part of that club. Ahh and this is going to be a big part of my wedding... I'm so excited. I even bought the Wishes CD and I listen to it in my car every day. Lol, and sometimes it makes me tear up too! Worst investment ever! You get "I wanna go back to Disney" anxiety every time you listen! So about 4 minutes before Wishes was over, our buzzer when off. The word around the viewing area was that you could wait until it was over to get your table... so we waited. I was so relaxed--I want to see Wishes all the time now, lol! We went into the restaurant and were finally seated at 8:15.

Part 2 Coming Up After We Go to Dinner :)
((Is it wrong to order Chicken Fingers on Thanksgiving??))

Congrats on your engagement! I am looking forward to your reviews. :)

Back to the CG.

We were seated in the middle in front of the food stations. The seating didn't matter anymore since Wishes was over. We had a really nice female waitress who introduced us to the menu and gave us some information about the restaurant. We ordered our iced teas and took a look at the menu. I suggested he not get adventurous because the steak is what I wanted to have at the wedding... so I was assuming he would get a flatbread as an app. To my surprise, he told me he wanted sushi. Oh. :confused3

Our waitress came back with drinks and our bread and butter. OMG yum. The sea salt on the butter made this soooo good. I was in carb heaven.

IMG_0210.jpg

I went first and placed my order, I made my adjustments and she smiled, said they were no problem at all!! How nice!!

Then Dave ordered his. He asked for the California Roll for an appy and the waitress told us that they had an amazing Sushi Maker/Chef/I-Forget-What-the-Technical-Term-Is-Person, lol. She highly, highly recommended the Spicy Kazan Roll which is crab, bay scallops, tuna and shrimp and fireball sauce. He voiced his concern about tuna and she said to trust her... and if he didn't like it, she would take it back and get him his California Roll. Wow, with that offer he went ahead and got the recommended appy.

So here it is:

IMG_0211.jpg

He found this to be amazing. This is one of the reasons he feels we must go back in May, lol. He was in heaven and talked about it for the whole week. I almost thought we were going to have to go back, lol!! He's glad he went with her recommendation. I'm obviously not a sushi person--but I'm glad he liked it.

I surprised him a little with:

IMG_0212.jpg

The Slow Roasted Suckling Pig Flatbread. Heirloom Apple Butter, Carmelized Onions, Cheddar Cheese and Cracklins. I really like this. There was a taste in there somewhere that I wasn't clicking with--I'm assuming the carmelized onions, but it was still pretty good. I ate all but one piece. I would recommend it for sure. I loved the little cracklins.

Although we ordered the same dinner... they look very different... because I'm difficult :)

This was his, as is, right off the menu:

IMG_0213.jpg

Oak Fired Filet, Teriyaki BBQ sauce, candied carrots and potato gratin. He thought this meal was fantastic. This is added to his "must do's" now.

Mine was a little different:

IMG_0214.jpg

The carb attack :cutie: I heard the mac and cheese was great here, so I changed out the carrots for mac and cheese, woo hoo!! I had the sauce put on the side so I could at least stick my finger in it and try, lol. Don't judge, if you're picky, you know how it goes ;) The sauce wasn't bad, I liked it... I just didn't use it. The filet was amazing and tender. I ordered it medium and it was just perfect. The potatoes were perfect. The mac and cheese was yum yum yum!! I'm glad I tried them.

How could this place get any better...

Oh yeah, dessert. I can't find either of our desserts on current menus, but they were both fantastic!!

He got the fall apple dessert:

IMG_0215.jpg

I got the current chocolate trio dessert:

IMG_0216.jpg

This had PEANUT BUTTER GELATO!!! I'm not sure if you heard me: PEANUT BUTTER GELATO!! This was the most amazing cold treat I've ever tasted. Next time if they still have it, I'll tell them to keep their other mess and give me a giant dish of this. So so good.

Our waitress brought us a to go box and said it was our engagement treat for later :)

IMG_0217.jpg

There was no way we could eat it there, lol. We were stuffed.

I was nervous about eating here because it looked too fancy for us. This was one of our best experiences at WDW. I think everyone should give it a try!! They were great with accommodating me and treated us no different than those in sequined cocktail dresses and stilettos. I could rave about this all night, but I still have 10 hours of DVR to catch up on :lmao:

Tomorrow starts the beginning of retail madness. Retail is my 2nd job, so this means since the store is opened later now, I will be losing an hour and a half of sleep almost every day until Christmas. Joy. I will be doing my best to keep up with this as much as possible :) There may be times where I write the review at job #1 and add pictures when I get home from job #2. Photobucket is blocked out at work and I can't use it. So I'll write it up and insert later. I know it's a bit unconventional, but I want to keep this moving :wizard:

Hope everyone had a great holiday!!

Happy Thanksgiving.
Thanks for the amazing update, my son loves visiting CR for the arcade (he plays and my husband keeps an eye on him while I shop).
I love the wishes CD (I bought it 2 years ago and I play it once a week and I love it)...this upcoming trip I'm going to buy the 4 park cd that someone recommended.
Can't wait for yummy reviews:surfweb:

What a wonderful CG meal! I LOVE that molten chocolate cake. I wish I could try yours with the peanut butter ice cream. I've had it with raspberry, strawberry, and peppermint....but I looove PB too so that sounds really tasty!

Sorry our La Cava meet fell through. Maybe we'll meet up one day in the future...I imagine we will both have many more trips to WDW! :)

Great review of CG! We're going back in May for the first time in almost two years for my son's 21st birthday and he's a sushi lover.:thumbsup2

What a wonderful meal at California Grill! I love the view of the MK from there

Now you've got me really excited!! We are going to the Calif Grill next month for the first time. I can't wait!

GREAT reviews so far!:thumbsup2

congrats on your engagement !
I once switched over to CSR after spending 2 horrible nights at POP, we loved it! Disney was very accomadating and we never regretted it, especially the queen beds :goodvibes
I'm in , your CG review looked great, can't wait for more.:thumbsup2

This was an eventful day!! We got an early start, took the bus to MK and hopped on the monorail to the Poly. We checked in and immediately got our table at Kona Cafe. We tried breakfast here on our last trip and loved it--so we decided to do it again. He got his same order, and I switched mine up.

I like how relaxed it is in here. I like character breakfasts as much as the next one... but sometimes it's nice to have a relaxed morning meal.

103_0002.jpg

For starters, I got Kona Blend Coffee and Orange Juice. I dream of this coffee every morning as I pour my Maxwell House into my to-go cup. So good. Dave got the Lilokoi Juice and an Iced Tea. He really likes the eccentric juices at WDW breakfasts, especially this one :)

103_0003.jpg

I made some adjustments to the Big Kahuna. I changed the Macadamia/Pineapple pancakes to Blueberry, and I opted for more potatoes and skipped the eggs. I just wasn't feeling eggs. I love the potatoes here!! Yum!! I ate all my ham first, that was my favorite! The bacon, was bacon... not thick but I don't discriminate about bacon! The sausage was mild and I liked that too!! The pancakes were yummy, but I was about full by the time I got to them. I do have to say I didn't like the french toast. I was taught (in PA) to always put lots of cinnamon in my french toast, and when there isn't cinnamon, I just don't like the eggy flavor. There was nothing wrong with it, I just wanted more cinnamon. Still an amazing meal... I'll probably get it again. Last time I got the Tonga Toast and... it was NOT for me, lol.

103_0004.jpg

He went with his usual Steak and Eggs, minus the eggs. He got grits instead. Ugh, grits just sound nasty, but he really liked them. I was always an egg person until I met Dave. He doesn't eat them, so I don't buy them anymore and I tend to shy away from them now. Like I needed to be picky about one more thing, lol!! He cleaned his plate with no problem.

....and to celebrate our engagement...

103_0005.jpg

103_0006.jpg

the cupcakes were heavy and dry, but I was stuffed anyway so it didn't matter.

This is a great breakfast. I really do recommend it. It's a nice no-fuss, don't have to worry about pictures or waiting around for the last character breakfast. I like that it's an open atmosphere and you can see the decor of the Poly--it's a nice touch.

After breakfast, we walked over to Franck's for our Wedding Site Visit. I've never walked thru the Poly grounds and wow it's so pretty! I really liked taking the beach over to the GF. I definately want some wedding pictures over there!!

In case you didn't know... (off topic)
This is where I'm getting married!! You can see the castle in this pic, but it looks sooo tiny :)

103_0012.jpg

After our site visit, we were still full. We had reservations for the Grand Floridian Cafe, but we weren't feeling it. We shopped around the GF thinking if we stuck around a bit, we'd get hungry. After about a weeks pay in Basin White and a look in all the other shops, we still weren't hungry. So we went to wait for the monorail. It was taking forever and we were trying to figure out plans. We decided to go back in and eat anyway, even if we weren't hungry. Sounds like a dumb plan, but we needed to do something with the credit, lol. So next up is the Grand Floridian Cafe Lunch!

Ugh... you can tell I had a different camera that day.

I just have to recap the drama. I was charging the battery for my digital camera. I was in such a hurry because it was an early morning that here's what I grabbed:

Digital Camera WITH Memory Card WITHOUT Battery

Video Camera (that can do still shots) WITH Battery WITHOUT Memory Card

Big problems, lol. On the most important day because of the Wedding stuff!! So my only solution was to put the memory card in the Video Camera and use that. I was soooooooooo mad that I almost cried. I threw a little hissy on the monorail when I figured out what I did. Not one of my finer moments.

I know... I've been a bad dis-er... but I'm ready to continue!

So even though we weren't hungry, and we were early for our ressie, we made our way to the podium and were seated immediately. We were greeted by our male server. He was very inquisitive and thought he was very funny. He asked how we got engaged, where we were from, about the wedding, our blood type, our mothers maiden name... okay, well now I'm exaggerating, but you get it. The questions weren't in a "I'm excited for you" way... they were in a "I'm nosy and trying to act interested" kind of way. So when he decided to quit talking... we ordered.

For starters, he got the Carmelized Onion Soup and I got the Crab Cakes.

103_0058.jpg

103_0059.jpg

He said his soup was good. He really likes french onion soup to begin with. I asked him how it was compared to Chefs de France and he said it was the same thing... He said this all while not looking up from his video game just now. I bet if I asked him for a million dollars and to move the wedding up to this November, that he would nod his head yes and reply, "sure." :rotfl2:

The crab cakes were good. There was nothing wrong with them, I've just been spoiled by the Captain's Grille. I am on a constant hunt for a crab cake to beat them. I doubt it will happen. I nipped at these as I wasn't super hungry anyway and I wanted to save room for my entree. I mainly picked out the big pieces of crab.

Our waiter kept our drinks filled, talked and talked and talked... then our meals came. He ordered the the Grand Sandwich, Open-faced hot Turkey, Ham, Bacon and Tomato, with a rich Boursin Cheese Sauce and Fried Onion Straws. I ordered the New York Strip with mashed potatoes and veggies. Lol, for not being hungry, I ordered a big meal! I really wanted mashed potatoes though.

103_0061.jpg

103_0060.jpg

He liked the grand sandwich. It was a nice break from the steak and beef he normally eats at WDW all week. He said he would recommend it. I got this answer out of him because he took a gaming break for a trip to the freezer for some Ben and Jerry's.

For not being hungry... I ate all of this except the veggies (yuck). The onion straws were a pleasant surprise because I luv them!! The steak was good. Don't expect a Yachtsman or Cali Grill type, but it was a good steak. Nice for lunch. The mashed potatoes were yummy as well!

Somehow after all that... we were ready for dessert. We choose the sampler for dessert verbally from what options he gave us.

103_0062.jpg

different angle

103_0063.jpg

I told him he could have the Tiramisu and the Key Lime Tart and I'd take the Chocolate Mousse and the Lemon Cheesecake. I'm not a fan of Tiramisu or Key Lime. He dipped into the Chocolate Mousse and told me I couldn't have it. I told him it was mine. He's like, no, seriously, there's nuts in there. Hazelnuts. No one said anything about Hazelnuts or I would have just ordered a Lemon Cheesecake instead of this mini teaser. The Lemon Cheesecake was delish and I wish I had more. He didn't love the Key Lime, and really really liked the Tiramisu. He said the mousse would have been better with no nuts--I agree.

So we bid farewell to our chatty waiter and made our way back to the monorail. I desperately wanted to drop my heavy Basin White bags at the room. Before we left, we snapped a shot of the gingerbread house being made!

103_0057.jpg

I desperately wanted my Canon digital back--I'd never forget that battery again!

Next up is Citricos before MVMCP!!

I'm joining in! I'm excited to hear about the rest of your experiences. Your pictures turned out great with the new camera, by the way. What type of digital did you get?

Oh, and Congratulations!!
