I need help from experienced users -- in the last couple of days, I've found that certain websites have started appearing on the iTouch with the mobile version. I really enjoyed the experience of seeing the "real" version of sites like CNN and MSNBC, and would love to be able to get those versions, rather than the mobile headline version. I am wondering why this is happening all of a sudden -- does it have anything to to with the software upgrade ( I downloaded it about a week ago)? When you put in the regular URL, it automatically sends you to the mobile version - any way around this? I miss my full browsing fun!

Thanks!

To answer your question, no it is not a function of the new 2.0 OS upgrade; but, rather that websites are beginning to offer mobile versions of their pages.

Lets use CNN for an example. When you navigate to CNN.com their server automatically detects that you are using an iPhone and loads the mobile version. Withthatbeing said, if you scroll to the very bottom of the page, you will see a link that says "Regular Site". If you click it, it will take you to the full webpage.

MSNBC is a little more tricky (meaning I have not figured out how to navigate the full page yet). If I figure it out, I will post the solution here.

Hope that helps.

I should add something else. I read the New York Times and recently downloaded the stand alone NYT app. I am blown away how nice it is. Having the entire NYT on my iPhone in an easy to read format is wonderful.

Thanks, that does help. I noticed it first on CNN, and kind of gave it an 'oh well.' Then I noticed it this morning on MSNBC and started getting annoyed. I think that seeing the full-graphic version of each website is part of why I enjoy the iTouch so much. It is more than a headline service, it is a full web experience. (Now if it could only do Flash.....) Why have the ability to zoom in to web sites if all you are going to see if a headline listing? I am looking forward to someone figuring out MSNBC.

I do have the downloaded NY Times app, and will start using it more!

Strangeite,

I looked and looked, but no longer see the link to the regular site on CNN mobile. However, I did find a workaround on an IPhone forum -- enter www.cnn.com/index.html instead. It goes straight to the regular website, then you can create a separate bookmark for it.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work for MSNBC, but will keep researching.....

So I emailed MSNBC tech support with a question about how to get to the regular version of the site, and here is the reply I received....

Hello Pam,

Thank you for contacting MSNBC Technical Support. My name is Rebecca.
I understand that you are unable to view the full, regular version of the MSNBC website via your iPod Touch Safari Browser. Please accept our sincere apologies in this matter.
Pam, MSNBC developers have decided to provide the mobile version of MSNBC for iPhone users. This decision is intended to ensure that you do not encounter problems with MSNBC mobile; tests have shown the EDGE network is too slow to load all the components needed to view the full version properly.
Thank you for your feedback, and we apologize for the inconvenience this issue may cause you.
We appreciate your continued support as we strive to provide you with the highest quality service available. Thank you for using MSNBC.
Sincerely,

Rebecca,
MSNBC Technical Support

So I replied that I hope in the future they consider including a link to the regular site as an option...I guess that answers that!
