items stolen from luggage

Love this!! :thumbsup2 Definately going to do it on my next trip. I ussually try to tuck those things in the middle of the suitcase to be hidden, but after this thread I am going to use them like crazy.

We also have not used TSA locks, because I had always thought it made you more of a target and people say they are so easy to pick.

Wow, never heard that they were easy to pick. Thanks for the heads-up though. :flower3: Now I'm hoping those TSA locks will be more of a deterent instead. Like another poster said earlier....they'll go on to an easier target.

When you have zip ties on your luggage, don't you need to remove them when they go through security
Only if they want to inspect your luggage, and I'm sure security can clip them. But why would you need zipties on your carry-on?

or get checked in at the airport?
No need to remove them.

What about scissors, I know you can not carry those on board
Actually you can. From the TSA website:
"Scissors - metal with pointed tips and blades shorter than four inches" are allowed in caarry-on or checked.

Whether I am flying somewhere or on a cruise, med and documents stay with me at all times. I never ever put anthing important in my bags that are going to be handled by someone else. I carry a small roll on for that purpose. I have been on several cruises and never did I have something stolen. When I travel I leave all of my expensive jewelry at home in a safe and that includes my wedding ring. I do like the stars do, I purchase nice cheep jewelry that looks expensive that take that with me when I travel. I don't want to worry about someone taking my treasures so I leave them safely at home. Not to sound morbid, but in case of a bad event happening to me while I am on a trip my DD's will at least have my jewelry.

I like the idea of the zip ties just trying to figure out the details.

Store a fingernail clipper in outer pocket to cut zip ties.

Alternatively, fingernail clippers are permitted as a carry-on item.

Well I stick my dirty undies and socks on the out side. If they want to steal them, they have more issues than sticky fingers.:rotfl2:
I haven't had anything taken thankfully. But I would hate it if I did.

:lmao: I do this not b/c I'm smart--but b/c I don't want dirty socks & stuff in my own luggage w/my clean clothes/souvenirs. That's a smart idea---now I will put dirty socks in the outer pockets for the thiefs. Muhahaha :rotfl:

I like to cable tie that though... A lot of times, because we're going across the border, I'm more concerned about people putting things into my luggage than them taking stuff out. The cable ties won't stop them but it might slow them down enough that they'll try another suitcase than waste time on mine.

Ever since I started watching the show "Locked up Abroad", I've worried about that. Now, those people actually do smuggle drugs, but it made me think about someone hiding something illegal in our luggage. DH thinks I'm nuts to worry about it, but after watching how horrible it is in those prisons, I really do worry about it. Sounds like you've got a good idea. I will definitely keep that in mind :goodvibes

Another option is to put zip ties on your luggage. It makes it harder to open it and get something out quickly. This is what we do.

I always put key ring loops around the zippers on my luggage. It would take an awful lot of effort to remove those and can't be done quickly.:hippie:

Never thought of that, but might try it on the next cruise.

Pens work also to pop the tie, or a key.Depends on what size you use

Even if TSA or any of the alphabet soup organizations decide to open your suitcase after you zip tie them, theyll close the bag again, the put some type of tape on it saying what organization opened it and where.I carry extras with me, even though we drive to the port (We live in Fl) to keep the honest people honest. If I fly anywhere I have a few TSA aproved locks. You can go to any big box store and they have an assortment of zip ties. I usually use one of the smaller sets, though I do carry a few bigger ones also.

The idea isnt for security, but to keep the bags from accidentally opening,(I used to work for the airlines and have seen more than a few open accidentally being loaded.)but to be a deterent. If someone wants in your bag theyll get in no matter what. The idea is to get them away from your bag with a visual cue that its not worth the effort.

Oh my goodness! I do to!!!! And here I thought I was the only one who did this! Great minds think alike! :thumbsup2

We made the mistake trying to lighten our load getting off the ship by putting one of our carry-on bags out the night before. We had it filled with most of our souvenirs from our B2B but didn't lock it. The next morning we could not find the bag for the customs check. We went over to the Lost and Found and we were able to locate the bag with the tag ripped off and all of the souvenirs taken.

We contacted Disney multiple times concerning this but were never acknowledged.

Needless to say now all of our bags are locked when we put them out the night before.

I love the key ring idea. I keep jewelry , passports,cc's etc with me always but never thought my pocket calendar, brochures, cards, and over the counter meds would be worth taking a chance to a thief.
The lost and found from DCL did say they refer all "missing items" to their risk mgmt. person and also informed me that the actual terminal is owned by port authority, the porters are employed by an outside co., not DCL, so I was also refered to Brevard County Sheriff Dept.
I just thought they would interested in case it happens again.
I 'm just happy we took the photos with us off the ship. I have always been worried about my stuff not getting ON the ship. In fact, we upgraded rooms about a month out and was told to just cross out the old room number and write the new one on, which is what we did. My son and I still had to go find our luggage ourselves as 2 went to the correct room and 2 were outside the old room.
Lesson learned.

These are all great ideas, I am going to start using zip ties and bring the nail clippers.

My luggage on a direct flight from DFW to Costa Rica on AA was no where to be found for my entire trip with no type of securities. It did finally show up the day we were going home. The bag had been messily dug through, everything was there!

We now split all our packing between suitcases, so you could have atleast half of your things in this situation.
