We I found a decent flight on itasoftware.com but cna't figure out how to book it. The airlines, American won't give me the flight for the price they say its double the price. The website says to sue this code to book but there is no place to inter a code on any online websites i've tried. Any suggestions?

When you choose the flight, click on "booking details" at the upper left of the screen. The bottom of that view will give you all the details of the fare classes. (Those letters that identify the price category of the seat; here's an example: LE14D1N)

If you can't find those exact flights for the same price on the airline's own site, it is best to fax the details page to a travel agent to let them book it for you. (Investigate in advance to find one that has the lowest charge for booking tickets; they seldom do it for free nowadays.)

Do note that sometimes ITA gives back several seats at differing fare classes to arrive at the lowest-priced flights for the number of travellers you have. The airline's phone agents and online engines will not give back a fare unless there are enough open seats at that fare-class to accomodate the whole party. So if that fare is only good for 2 seats and you need 3, they won't find it when searching for 3 seats. The "booking details" info will let you tell them exactly what they are looking for, so they can book each seat separately at the best price available.

Also note that if you are booking multiple seats at differing fare-classes they may well not be co-located on the plane. You may end up with separated seats.
