it is a sad day when you can't even trust Disney to not let crooks break into your pimped out Escalade with spinners and take 12,000 dollars worth of jewlery. And that was just everyday jewlery, thank goodness it was not going out on the town jewlery. :rolleyes1

Huh? Must have missed something here. In other words.... Say What??? Or in more proper English.... Would you mind explaining this? :listen:

It's about this article reported in the dis news area:
Area attracts tourists -- and thieves
Posted on July 23, 2006 Email To Friend Print Version

Orlando Sentinel - After a recent string of car burglaries at hotels and tourist attractions, authorities are reminding Central Florida's residents and visitors not to let down their guard.

"People go out on vacation and relax, sometimes too much," said Orange County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Carlos Torres. "They lower their guard, and they leave things in their vehicles."

From June 1 to July 5, Orange County sheriff's investigators logged 76 car burglaries on the southwest side of the county, home to many hotels and the Walt Disney World parks and resorts. Their counterparts at the Orlando Police Department, which patrols the Universal Studios area and International Drive, had more than 50 on record.

Volusia County has also had its share of break-ins, registering about 150 in unincorporated neighborhoods in the past four weeks.

Authorities think they caught the suspects in a majority of the July Fourth weekend burglaries in Orange County.

On July 6, Osceola County deputies arrested five Miami-Dade residents in Kissimmee, suspects in a car burglary in the area earlier that day. Inside their car, deputies found evidence linking them to many other area burglaries. One of the suspects told investigators that the group had committed as many as 100 burglaries in Central Florida. They were staying at the Comfort Inn in Lake Buena Vista.

Antonio Spann, 24, Jean Fenelon, 19, Kenny Phillips, 20, Jean Roche, 23, and Stephen Hall, 19, have all been charged with burglary and have other charges pending. They were released from jail after posting bond.

Hundreds of cars parked at Central Florida's hotels and tourist attractions makes the area ripe for this type of crime. The thieves know that tourists are likely to have valuables in their vehicles, Orlando police Sgt. Jim Stewart said.

"They think that because they locked the car, their things are safe."

On July 2, a Universal Studios-area hotel -- almost full to capacity -- had reports of break-ins at 15 cars in its parking lot. The same night, at least 18 more cars were burglarized in the area. Police think the same suspects were involved in all of the cases.

"It's really not something we can predict," Stewart said. "But it really goes with hotel traffic. The more business, the more likely this is to happen."

The method was the same in most of the burglaries in Orange County. The thieves smashed the passenger-side window, probably with an emergency window-puncher sold at most auto-part stores and then grabbed whatever they could reach: purses, computers, DVD players, phones and anything else of value.

In Volusia, however, the burglaries were mostly in cars that had been left unlocked, a spokesman with the Volusia County Sheriff Office said.

On July 3, the Lima family, in town for the holiday weekend from Hialeah, had their vacation ruined in an instant.

While they were at Disney's Blizzard Beach water park, thieves ransacked their SUV in the parking lot. They took more than $12,000 in jewelry.

"They took my wife's wedding band, with a 11/2-carat diamond, another ring with a ruby and diamonds, two Movado watches, all of our credit cards, and $200 in cash," Antonio Lima said.

Several other cars also were hit in the park that day, police reports show.

The Limas had stowed all of their jewelry inside a purse hidden under the passenger's seat. The thieves found it -- probably knowing that people often hide items of value there.

The Limas think Disney should provide better security.

"They charge a pretty penny; you'd expect them to at least have security cameras," Lima said. He said Disney security officers told him there were no cameras in the parking lot when he suggested they review the tape.

A Disney spokesman would not confirm whether the parking lots are monitored with cameras.

"I can't comment on specific security practices," spokesman Jacob DiPietre said. He said that guest safety was a top priority, and that the parking lots are patrolled by Disney security officers as well as deputies.

And the fact that somebody would blame DISNEY for a car theft is a little ridiculous, I must add. Why did you leave so much jewelry in there?

I think you missed the sarcasm. It was a comment on the news story. It wasn't actually the OP who this happened to.

My thoughts - who even HAS $12,000 worth of jewelry and even if you did (and I'd like you to adopt me), why would you take it on vacation? That is flurting with disaster. And hiding it in your car? Every Disney resort room has a room safe and a secured area with the front desk. These people were stupid, stupid, stupid. Good gosh, my husband even puts his Kroger card into the in room safe.

Even if I had it (and I don't), I certainly wouldn't be wearing it to the water park.

When we go out to a park, especially a water park, we leave our valuables in the hotel safe or a drawer.. never out in the open.

Not really commenting about the car break-ins, but did want to mention a situation we had at the Studios just a little over a week ago. DD and DS went to get their pictures taken with Sully and Mike. My DSIS went with them while DH and I sat and had a cold drink. DD put down her mister fan to get her camera out of her fanny pack, turned to take a picture of DS and when she looked back down, the mister fan (purchased at WalMart) was gone! :confused3 Someone, in that short little amount of time snatched it from behind DD. She was so upset. Couldn't believe someone would steal at WDW :sad2: Well, lesson learned for all of us- It may be the most magical place on earth, but that doesn't mean that the real world and some of the bums in it don't go there. DH is still talking about it.

Why the Heck would someone leave expensive jewelry in their car? or even CHEAP jewelry? :confused3 DUH! how dumb were these people? never mind, we already know! I wouldn't mind HAVING that much jewelry though! :thumbsup2 we never leave anything in our car accept maybe an occasional brochure...just common sense! we are at DW, NOT a different planet! it would be nice to think that none of this happens there though wouldn't it? :teeth:

It doesn't sound like alot of jewelry---just a very expensive wedding/engagement ring and both of their watches, plus another ring. I don't wear my rings or watch to the waterparks, either.

But. . . it should have been stored in a safe at the resort.

I will confess that I have "hidden" my rings in the car when I've forgotten to leave them at home if I go to the gym. They are worth far less than $12,000, but the sentimental value is priceless.

Trying not to be a cynic here, but it's hard for me to believe they actually left $12K in jewelry in the car. My instinct was that this was an insurance scam. Yeah, the car was probably broken into, but the actual loss is a question mark for me. I know, I'm so jaded, but again, does it make any sense to leave that kind of jewelry in the car???

Well, considering Orlando is on track to break the record for the # of homicides in a year (not surprising...when poverty levels increase, violent crime tends to increase, too), one should be a bit mindful of one's surroundings (and exercising some common sense about leaving valuables in a vehicle)

No, I believe it. It was only 1 1/2 carats of diamonds. That's not outrageous in this day and age. I'd say worth conservatively 7,500. Plus two fancy watches and another ring you could easily get to $12K.

I have left my rings in the glove compartment in Hawaii when we went swimming before due to having already checked out of the hotel, but we did lock the glove compartment. It seemed the lesser of evils to keep it locked in the glove compartment versus losing it in the ocean. But these people should have used the lockers at the water park if they had no other option.

I would have never made fun of their loss if they did not blame Disney for it.

As a not-so-proud resident of Hialeah I must say that THESE PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS....its not like came from a down home country city...Hialeah is one of the busier and larger areas around Miami...And people here know better! I would understand if say they had it in their in-room safe (even though I dont know why they would take such expensive jewelry on vacation with the to The World anyways :confused3 ) But to leave it in your car? Thats just STUPID.these people are probably trying to run an insurance scam...

Sorry if I sound cynical...but it just urks me!
