It finally happened

I'll be 25 at the end of the month. I realized that when I talk about my parents, I use Mom and Dad. When I talk to them, I use Mom or mother (a typical start to a conversation, "how is mother?" "good, how is daughter?") and I use Daddy or Pops with my Dad. At some point I stopped calling my Mom "Mommy" but I don't know when. I think I'll always be Daddy's little girl though

DD is 2.5 and goes between Mom and Mommy depending on what she wants. If she wants me to notice something, I'm Mom. If she wants a hug or something to eat, I'm Mommy.

Lately she's started calling my husband "Papa." Not sure where that came from!!

DD14 always calls me "mum" which she got from me calling MY mother mum. Unless she wants something; then, it's "Mummaaaa...?"

I was waiting to see this one. DH and I both call our mothers mum. I thought maybe it was regional, but I see you are from Maine--I am in PA. Are you of Irish descent? My mother called her mother mum also. My girls (9, 6 and 3) generally call me mumma. Sometimes mommy and I have heard all of them say "my mom" when talking about me to others. When DH talks about me to them he says mommy. And when then want something it is mummaaaaa!

I think it's funny that your son asked.
I usually call my mother 'mom' unless I'm really upset. Then I call her 'mommy.'
And my father is always 'daddy.'

My DS25 calls us "mom" and "dad" and so does our DD18, UNLESS she's sick....then it's "Mommy, my tummy/head/etc. hurts!"

I've called my mom and dad, "grandma" and "grandpa" for so many years now that I don't remember when I didn't! Yes, I know they aren't MY grandma and grandpa, but since my oldest child was born over 37 years ago that's what I've called them. And I was only 18 then! I say "mom" and "dad" when talking about them to other people except my sisters, then it's "grandma" and "grandpa" again. When writing an email to them, or about them to my sisters it's "g'ma" and "g'pa" (pronounced gee maw and gee paw).

I call my DH "Daddy" to my kids and he calls me "mom" or "your mother" to them.

It's really confusing now that we have our first grandchild! I'll talk to him about "Daddy", really meaning DH who is now "Grandpa"! I just haven't gotten used to calling my DS "Daddy" when talking to his son yet!

Maybe I should start calling everyone by their first names! At least they'd be no repeats or confusion!

I use Dad or Daddy, Mom or Mama even as an adult.

My nephews use Dad and Mom. Since they were 9 or so they prefer Dad (though they still do daddy and we refer to him as daddy ie 'ask your daddy'. They always refer to their mom as Mom. I can't remember when they ever called her Mommy, and barely remember them calling her Mama once they left thier toddler years..

I think mama and mommy are reginal things but interchangable. Around here it's not unusual to here adult men and women refer to Mama and Daddy.

But let's be honest here I've been called alot worse and for those of you with older teenagers, let's just be happy that don't verbalize the names they are thinking

my son(12) calls me mommy still but not a whole lot, it is mostly mom. My daughter (16) calls me mom BUT calls me (mommy) when she wants something or when she is trying to butter me up LOL.

Yes, my DS also informed me when he was 8 or 9 no more calling him by the nickname in front of his friends, no kissing or hugging bye at school.

I remember when he was little and called me momma - then it went to mommy.

Thank goodness you both posted! I don't think my 2 year old even calls me Mommy. I can't believe people 'correct' their children if they call them mom. My 8 year old totally calls me Mom and has for years. My 2 year old will say Mama but no Mommy.

I guess I'm the only one that doesn't really care forMommy. I'm fine with being Mom or Mama or even my 1st name (which is what I call my mom 1/2 the time!)

I really can't stand when somebody refers to me as a "mommy". My 9 year old has always called me Mama or she uses my first name when talking about me to her friends or other people. My mom has always been "mom" or once in a while, Robino and my dad is Daddio or Stevie-Boy. Boy does he hate being called Stevie-boy! My daughter used to call my dad Papa but it's just grandpa now. Oh...and she calls my mom "Regular Grandma", which is better than G-G-G-G-Unit, which she used for a few months. Hahaha
