I finally sat down this weekend and burned ALL of my photos to DVD's. I have my photos on both internal and external hard drives, but it feels really good knowing that they are not ONLY on my hard drives. I'll bring the disks in to work tomorrow so they are offsite.

I've done DVD backups occasionally, but besides my Disney trip photos, I honestly couldn't tell you what was backed up and what wasn't. I now know that everything as of 1/6/08 is backuped.

I know that DVD's are not a perfect archival medium, so I'll have to repeat this process periodically. But for now, it feels great to start off the new year with a little extra bit of security.

I know there are more of you out there like myself who are one power surge away from loosing all your photos. So go ahead and back it up. It feels great!!!

I do wish I had time to do that. I have about 5000 photos that need that treatment.

Good for you, that takes a good load off your shoulders huh?

I backed up my photo hard drive over the holiday. Only 5 DVD's.....not as bad as some around here I bet :)

do you back up other files or just your photos...

for 80 a year My photos are hosted by zenfolio, I can share with others,I can sell pics if I want,I can order my pics direct from MPIX and they have a backup in another location, so my pics are backed up twice..

I'm so depressed, your post peaked my curiosity, I've recently started burning my pics to DVD,,

I just checked, I only have 272 gigs to go....

I am intrigued by this..... I back up a lot now, but I hate to do it. I lost a lot of pictures of our new puppy when my PC crashed, and something like this, if I could backup once a week or so, would make me very very happy.

if you host your pics on smugmug or zenfolio, you have multiple backups, plus a way to share your pics with family and friends

Then you win as the poster child of why not to put off backing up your photos. That should only take you roughly 60 disks or so, better get busy.

the thing i wonder about is what if someplace like this goes out of business? what would happen to all your stuff? any ideas?( mozey i mean)

You should look into a blu-ray or HD-DVD drive. It'd be much easier to backup all those pictures.

Depends. If you know they are going of of business you can download them or pay them to put them on discs and send them to you. Time consuming or expensive, so neither seems very palatable.

If they just close up shop, well... you are most likely out of luck. That's why I won't rely on a company that I don't really know anything about to hold the keys to my files. Of course, I host my own server so I'm not limited to space restrictions or going out of business, but I still need to maintain backups. Now twice - once for the originals and once for the site (and the others that I host). I'm don't have to maintain as much as MICKEY88, but it's still a lot..

But can it back up other data?
nope, but does mozy allow you to share pics, and order them directly from a professional lab...

since this is the photo board I thought we were talking about backing up pictures, not other stuff,,, my mistake..

I agree with that, but most of my family doesn't print other then what I give them. And with a baby coming, they can look at the good pictures on my blog, or download them to their digital picture frame. I am really just looking for piece of mind for myself. So $54 a year to backup all of my data as opposed to $80 just for my family to never order a picture, might be worth it.

actually for 40 a year you get unlimited storage and can still order prints,,

the 80 account allows you to set prices for your pics and add watermarks,,, it's geared towards pros..

the only data I have to back up is pictures...my pc is photo work only...

That may be better then. $80 was a little steep. I have other data I needed backed up, but the pictures are the largest portion of it.
(Can this upload RAW?)
Thanks
