'cause, in addition to the roses and "smellies", I got a 580EX II speedlite for Mother's Day!!! DH almost had to pick me up off the floor when I opened it!

Bouncing the flash is definitely the way to go. For even better results, try bouncing with a diffuser or catchlight reflector. But before you try the Gary Fong or Sto-Fen or other gadgets, try one of the many DIY methods. The easiest/cheapest is to point the flash straight up with a 3x5 index card attached with a rubber band. This gives you the benefits of bounced light, but with a nice catchlight or slight sparkle of light in the eyes from the flash.
