oh i am sooo mad

i was talking to DH about posible taking a mini vacation ( after dreaming of the WDW trip for so long and having to wait 18 more mths) and i mentioned we COULD fly down to fort lauderdale for a weekend......i love the beach area and my kids liked it last year too.
we could not go until hurricane season was over( nov) but want to before spring breakers.....well i got my anser NO! - he was under the IMPRESSION that i was going to to trade 5 days at WDW for a weekend in fort lauderdale! like that is even comparable!

ohh i am so mad.! he said we cannnot afford 2 trips to florida! - HELLO fort lauderdale would be a cheap vacation! - no park tickets, NO fancy shamcy.just beach
thanks for the vent.......

GRRRRRRR

I imagine your husband is thinking about purchasing airline tickets to Florida for each trip which do add up. We don't do long weekends because for the cost of flying I want to stay a while. Also the reason we rarely do multiple trips in one year. If we were close enough to drive it would be different.

An alternate method would be to should what the original 5 days would cost, then trim that budget to allow for enough extra dollars to pay for 2 trips...you might get his attention then. Try using a little honey rather than vinegar.

Best wishes for a successful outcome!

that sounds like my husband. he is very much into saving money so one big vacation is enough for him.... but I have been able to show him on paper how much a "mini" vacation will cost and how
we could save for it. I also tell him how much fun I would have spending time with him and the kids away from the house...

so he said yes. We drove to San Antonio (5 hr. drive.)

Is there anywhere you could drive and save more money?
you could do priceline or hotwire for hotels and save more that
way.

have you been here?

it looks really neat.

or what about the mall of america. you have lots of cool
places around you, you could drive too.

This is exactly why I handle all the money for my family.

Misty - Greatwolf or Kalahari in the Dells would be great. They are pricey though - make sure you are going Sun - Thursday. Wildernesslodge would be nice too. If you go on the weekend you will be paying BIG TIME.

Those cheap weekends at the beach add up. We just did that last weekend. We drove to Virginia Beach for a 4 day weekend. DH, Me & DS (11). What on paper looked like a nice $600-800 trip-- came to just under $2000. I was thoroughly disgusted when I got home. We had a nice time and all, but for just $600 more I could of done an entire week at WDW!!!!!

our family has been to the beach and thought hmm let's go back instead of disney (husband thinking this not me) so I said okay
let' look at the budget for the beach:

with the driving 14 hours, stopping each way one night, renting a condo on the beach, food, and souviners/play money it came to about $3000!!! so he looked into disney and we got the trip all
expenses for $3400!!

so i agree I would rather go to WDW and since he saw the figure he does too!!

Kilee's right. Those cheap weekend trips DO add up! A new outfit ahead of time, snacks for the room, a couple meals out, souveniers . . . We do quite a few long-weekend trips throughout the year, but we don't fool ourselves into thinking that they're near-free.

In this case it sounds like airline tickets are the big problem. Is there something you can do closer to home? Check into your state parks. They often have cabins that can be rented for $200 or so for a weekend. South Carolina has some great ones. We stayed in an ocean-front cabin last Thanksgiving for $400/4 days. Over spring break we had a mountain-lake cabin for $240/3 nights. In each case we were able to drive and we took our own food, so the costs were minimal. Still not free though.

I hate it when a plan doesn't come together. Did you cost it all out and show him what it would cost? Sometimes seeing everything in black & white can be a real eye-opener.

I know that I was able to show my DH that the only difference in cost between us going to WDW and going to the Jersey Shore for a week was the cost of airfare. Hotel rates are so much less expensive in Orlando and their quality (overall) is much better. But then, I'm trading one type of vacation for another.

He's probably thinking that between airfare, hotel and rental car, the costs will be pretty high for just a long weekend getaway. And he may have a very good point. Airfare alone could run you $1000 for the family. Then there are the other incidental costs like food that will add to the budget.

If you could get all of your ducks in a row, and show him what it would cost and how you can trim the household budget to make it happen, he might be more receptive to the idea. But if the costs are too high, then it makes sense to try to do something a little closer to home. Sometimes you just can't argue with the bottom line.
