"Sunday Morning Coming Down" Anyone rememebr that Kris Kristofferson song? "I had a beer for breakfast and fumbled for my cleanest dirty shirt". Well, I did not have a beer for breakfast, but at this point of the trip we have reached the level where the dirty clothes outnumber the clean. I did fumble for my cleanest shirt. The winner for the day was my Jimmy Buffett "License to Chill" tour shirt. It seemed appropriate for a Sunday in Epcot.
[warning: Skip this part of you are offended by description of our family's devotional practice. No flames. please.] We all had a short devotion time in the room before we left for the park. It felt kind of wierd not going to church, but we have discovered that it is hard to find a comfortable church close to WDW. I hope the Man upstairs understands
. One thing we asked in our prayers was that God would show us signs of God's handiwork, especially in Epcot today. We prayed for the CMs who would serve us, and for the other guests who were enjoying their own vacations.
It was a cloudy morning as we arrived at Epcot. I figured our best strategy would be to head straight for Soarin'. My rationale was that since it was still in soft opening it could go down at any time, and that crowds would be much longer later in the day. As others have reported, it was a long hike from inside the Land pavilion to where the ride entrance was. Surely this is the longest queue in WDW. We walked right on, after a brief preshow featuring an old familiar face from sitcoms. (Don't want to spoil any surprises) The ride itself was just spectacular. We all thought the sensation of flying was unique and special. There are some effects throughout the show that really grabbed us. It was so good we decided to turn right aorund and do it again. Soarin' is a great addition to Epcot. It sure adds a lot to that side of Futureworld.
We then went over to get FP for Test Track (another family fave). There was about an hour wait, so we decided to do Ellen's Universe of Energy. This was the first time we had done that ride in a long time. It was nice to do it again. We just started skipping this ride because it was so long. It was perfect for us on thsi day though since we were in sort of a mellow Sunday mood. test Track was awesome as ever. Kind of funny. DS and I were in the front seat along with a single rider who was a guy about my age. He hollered so loud that DS kept looking at him as if to make sure evrything was alright. We lingered in the car showroom at the exit. You know you're a family man when you find yourself coveting the new Saturn minivan
We then went back to the other side of FW. Living Seas looked pretty crowded so we decided not to go see our old buddy Crush. Have to see him next time. We did JIYIF. Our family really likes this ride, even if it is getting a little less interesting for DW and I now that we have ridden it several times. Next we went to get a hug and a photo with Figment. Kids were all aquiver with anticipation.
On to World Showcase. We stopped at the plaza and did us some character huggin' as the bus pulled up. Then went to Mexico, etc. We did American Asventure for the first time. DD was so mad because she said 'I know all this stuff already." (She is in the second grade
) I think it was a case of the mid-vacation attitude setting in. I am already dreadin the teenage years.
After circling the world we did what we traditionally do on the way out of Epcot -ride Spaceship Earth. I remember a time when this was about my favorite ride in Epcot. Now my view is that it is a busted-up embaraasment that need ssome serious attention. I noted severall AAs that were not functioning properly. Then the ride stopped twice. Once for about 2-3 minutes as we were in the area where you view earth from afar. (I realize that sometimes the ride stops for loading and unlaoding, but that was not the case here). Then just as were withing 15feet of the platform to exit, the ride breaks down fro a loooong time. We spent 15 minutes listening to the recorded voice tell us that the ride woudl begin again momentarily. Even the kids realized how rdidculous thsi sounded. We all four just started giggling so loud that I think we drew attention from our fellow travelers stranded in nearby cars. Being the bad boy that I am, I led the way as we hopped over the closed door and made our way to the emergency exit. This was after three CMs passed us by, going to rescue people stranded further up in the bowels of Spaceship Earth, I suppose. I started to head straight over to Guest Services but refrained.
We went back to the Pop century and headed to the car instead ofthe room. We knew there would be no sense in even trying the food court. Sure enough, it was mobbed again. We went to Denny' s. DW had some stuffed French-errr, Freedom --Toast
. I had a meat-filled omelet, greasy hashbrowns, and a stack of pancakes. I think a complimentary visit to the cardiologist was included in the price.
Next up.... MK.
