is your hair a disaster when you cruise?

I posted this exact question several months ago and got a great response. Obviously it's a sore subject for many people. Our first cruise was a disaster, hair wise. However, the last cruise we took was much better. I think the weather was better (not so humid) and I think the outside cabins have a little more air circulation allowing my thick hair to dry easier. I really prepared the second time - if you have thick wavy hair, invest in some really good frizz control gels. (I think Frizz-Eaze is the best). I just gave in and went for the curly look. If I had tried to blow it out straight it never would have stayed that way anyhow. I'm letting my layers grow out so next year I should be able to pull it up. Good luck.

I guess I'm jsut lucky. I have think short hair, and it just kinda always looks the same no matter what.

My advise? Invest in a cute sunhat and use that during the day, then shower and wash your hair in the evening before dinner to have it looking great The humidity is lower in the evening

With the thick wavy, frizzy hair I have, my best tip is buy a hat on Castaway Cay...especially for after parasailing if you choose to do that. I was scary looking!

Months before you go try out some 'wash and wear' styles for your hair just so you can get somewhat used to it.

My hair has a lot of curl but is not thick. I straighten it every day so when the humidity hits it watch out. I just made sure it was long enough to pull back into a ponytail or hairclip.

I didn't wear makeup during the day either so I really didn't care too much about my hair . The pictures we took of us during the day are not ones that I want to display .

A couple of months ago my hairstylist introduced me to this stuff called Curls Rock by Catwalk. It is great! I wanted something that would make my crly hair look more 'finished'. I will be using it on the next trip to WDW and cruise. It holds the curl without my hair getting frizzy. I have even been wearing it curly to work every once in a while!

Perhaps not the most fashionable solution, but during the last cruise I bought a ball cap in Disney World with Hakuna Mattata across it. Pulled my hair back in a ponytail and wore it at the Blue Lagoon and Castaway Cay. The kids loved it and reminded everyone I met of the appropriate vacation attitude. Plus my Hubby thought I looked cute and that's all I really cared about. (Did NOT wear it to dinner though)

my worst hair cruise ever was on the NCL Norway.. I was trying to be good with packing and bought one of those small,compact travel hairdryers. It was awful...Now, i pack my big one no matter how much room it takes up!!!

I cruised the Wonder in December and actually was quite pleased with my hair! I never got the cut I needed before I left, so I expected disaster (I have hair like SC Minnie and also straighten it a lot). I brought along Paul Mitchell Heat for humidity and my usual products and all was good!

I remember watching "The Loveboat" when I was a teenager and you would see couples on deck with the ocean in the background.. so romantic, talking, kissing... etc..... with just a
slight breeze moving her hair.

Then I went on my first cruise... got ready for our romantic stroll on the deck and ended up with my skirt practically over my head... trying to get back inside the ship, holding the railings LOL

Mind you - that was a really windy night... but still!

On my last cruise I noticed 4 women laughing hysterically as they came through the doors from the deck.. their hair was a mess and they were giggling... they said "So much for our pre-dinner stroll"

I am now more careful about deck conditions before I wander out there... and during the day I usually have a pony tail or or put it up.. I noticed it was really hard to eat ice cream in the wind..

I had shoulder lenght hair when we went on our first cruise in Dec 2001. I didn't have any problems with it. While on board I went to the free hair consult on the first day and decided to go for a change while at sea. So mid trip I got a haircut at the salon (part of the spa). It is still short and I love it. The girl did a wonderful job.
If you are considering a change I would recomend the free hair consult before booking the appointment. Then you can make sure your appointment is with the person who you have already talked with.

I adjust my hair washing and products when I go to WDW or cruise. The FL water and the cruise water (not as much as FL water) cause my hair to style very differently than No. VA water. I much prefer the FL water cause I can actually style it then!

I try to plan ahead on the cruise...if I'm going to get pictures done before dinner I try to do that *before* I go out on deck. Plus I shy away from hair spray as the wind likes to pull up a whole "layer" of hair and keep it sticking in the air! I use pomade or a similar product so I can easily restyle my hair if necessary. I only use spray when perfectly coiffed hair is required (as in I've combed you there don't you DARE move!)--usually when I'm dressed pretty for pictures, say formal/semi-formal nights.

And my hair is fine (and thin in some spots ) so there's not too much to do with it anyway. I do notice that I usually sleep better on the cruise, meaning I don't move much at night cause I'm either wiped out or the gentle rocking relaxes me...which all equals a much prettier bed head in the morning.

Oh, and I always keep a baseball cap handy when on vacation. I don't want to scare the room service people should my bed head look its typical Oogie Boogie way!

Here is my favorite humid weather hair product (and a brief list of benfits from the Aveda website @ www.aveda.com):

Aveda Anti-Humectant Pomade
-repels moisture
-prevents frizziness
-satin finish

Also, when my hair is short, I use Aveda Custom Control...which gives my hair that cute spikey "Lisa Rinna" type of hair style.

I'm also a big fan of baseball caps!!

ps...Aveda products are a little pricey..but you don't need to use alot, they last for a long time, and they smell yummy!!!

Bumbleandbumble makes two great products as well, the Styling Creme and the Grooming Creme are both GREAT to tame unruly hair and add body as well.

The problem is they can be hard to locate

On our '99 cruise my hair was long so I had it corn-rowwed and braided and beaded. It was fun, and it was SO wash-and-wear! I really just shampooed my bangs every day and let the water run down the braids.

This trip my hair was shorter, so I just had the crown corn-rowwed. I think it was about as much hassle to dry and style the back as styling my whole head would have been! Plus, just a hint of my grey roots became visible. Nature's way of saying "give it up, honey?"

Anyway, if you have longer hair and no grey roots, I definitely recommend the corn rows and braids. It was freedom from hair styling for the whole trip! And made you feel sexy like Bo Derek in "10!"

If you don't want to buy expensive defrizzers, just take a little cream rinse/conditioner and smooth it over your hair -- that helps a lot! The pools can really strip your hair and this helps lessen the damage.
Luckily, I have long hair, so I keep it wrapped pretty tightly in twists/ponytails and such. I also wore bandanas and hats often during the trip so the wind didn't make a mess of my hair. Deck 9 can get pretty windy.

I LOVE Aveda...that's all I use for my long hair. I have hair that curls and frizzes so easily, but Aveda is a miracle product!!!
I use the pomade in the blue glass bottle, all the Brilliant line, Hang Strait, and you can NOT beat the feeling of Rose Mary Mint on your scalp! Ahhh, I think I'm going to go and wash my hair now!!!

Yes, last cruise (April) was so windy my book blew out of my hands at the pool.
This year I am hoping DEP 10 thickening gel has some control over my finehair.

This did not happen to me...as my "lovely" hair is so thick and so straight..it's beyond help!!!! But...on one of our cruises, I was coming from the Spa and a very "newly coiffed" very elegant, lovely gray haired elderly lady was being escorted from the hair salon out onto Deck 9 by her son/grandson. He very politely opened the door for her and she stepped out onto the deck. Well, her "newly coiffed" hair was no longer!!! I felt so bad for them. I felt if I had gone out first, I could have taken the "blow" from her..but coming out of the Spa, I was polite and let my elder go first(as I had been taught when I was a child). But she was mortified, as was the son/grandson. Why they didn't go where they were going on the elevators...I don't know.

So the moral to this story is...if you go to the salon to get your hair "coiffed"..beware of the wind if you go out on to Deck 9!!!!
