any tips? Do I need to buy a pair of walking shoes or I'll stick with my sandals?
Advantages and disadvantages?

Are you talking about getting ready for Disney or just in general? 1 mile a day is generally not a good amount of exercise unless you are just starting out. We typically walk 9-10 miles a day at WDW. I would try to walk as much as you can to get ready

YES YES YES get a good pair of sneakers (break them in) or Crocs. I would never wear regular sandals to WDW. I'd be miserable. Again...it's a LOT of walking!

well, if this is for health - walking 3 miles a day would be great. any sort of walking is good. definately get good shoes, not sandals. you're feet will hate you and you will ache if you wear improper footing. you can pick up some cross trainers or running shoes relatively cheap (by cheap i mean under $100).

good luck!

I walk 4 - used to run, but messed up my knee. My pace is 4.5 MPH, and I used to be able to walk 5 MPH - now that's my job! I think 3 miles, which should take about 45 minutes, is good exercise for a beginner. And definitely get sneakers!

GET GOOD SHOES!!!

I cannot stress that enough!!! I got fitted at a running store with shoes and inserts and I noticed the difference immediately!!

I say do the increment thing: 1/2 mile for a week, 1 mile for a week, etc and get up to 3 to 5 miles.

As for shoes at the world, all three of us alternate. We all have good runners and good sturdy sandals and I also throw in my flip flops (yes, I do even at the World). I find that sometimes my feet need "out" of shoes and the flip flops are nice for a change. Anyways, I will wear different shoes each day alternating between the three pairs.

Good luck!!

If you're currently doing no physical activity, then yes walking 1 mile per day is a good start.

To get your 10,000 steps per day, you're looking at about 5miles/day and that's minimum acticity -- not even crossing into the 'exercise' part of it.

Talk to your doctor, he/she sould be able to steer you in a safe direction.

If you don't mind me asking, how long does that take you?

I have been working on getting it under 2 hours, but it isn't happening, usually in the 2:05 range... set my alarm for 4:20, out the door by 4:30 and home a little after 6:30...

Yes, definitely get a good, supportive pair of walking or running shoes!

One mile is a good place to start. I think you'll find that after a while, one mile just won't seem like enough, and you'll want to go farther and farther!

I have a treadmill set up in my basement in front of the TV, and I watch movies from Netflix while I'm on the treadmill. I walk at 3 mph at a 4% incline, and I typically do about 2 miles in 40-50 minutes.

Have fun! Walking is a great exercise :thumbsup2

Unless you're training for a running event, I wouldn't focus on the "mile" part of it. Focus on the time you spend walking.

Get a good pair of walking shoes. They are very different than running shoes. I have been walking three miles a day for over a year now. I have recently increased my mileage because I am training for the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure this July. Among their training tips was to buy shoes designed specifically for walking, not running or cross trainers. I couldn't believe the difference!

I have also found that buying the socks with extra padding in the balls of the feet and the heel helps a lot too.

I think if you are just starting out, a mile is a good distance but you should be looking to increase that. Time is actually more important than distance I think when you start. A year ago it took me an hour to walk a mile. Now I can do 4 miles in an hour, with an incline.

I wish I had 2 hours in my day to do that. I would have to get up at 3:00 to be ready for work, and I seldom get to bed before 10:30- 11:00.

if you get ambitious and want to turn walking into jogging (evenutally) the couch to 5k program is great. And could be modified so that you are walking quicker during the "running" parts of the couch to 5k and strolling during the "walking" parts.

I agree with this.I did the C25k program and it WORKS. But Op , 1 mile is not all that much, and unless you are Huffing it, you are not burning all that many calories either..But it is good to start somewhere.

If your'e getting out and walking at all, you're probably doing more than most people. Be proud of that. I agree with the above poster who said to focus more on the time than on the miles. Oh, and by all means, wear good shoes!

Nice idea,..
Thanks for sharing guys... :)

1 mile is a good place to start...because once you start doing that, you'll start to add to it. I try to walk 2.5-3 miles or so (IRL or on treadmill) and it takes about 45 minutes to do three. Our neighborhood is a 2.5 mile loop and I can do that in a little over a 1/2 hour at a normal pace-- so not pushing it, but not meandering slowly. However, even just doing the regular pace every other day---my blood pressure went down significantly. So, it doesn't take much to begin to make things happen health wise....and then this motivates you to go faster/longer.

Doing something is better than doing nothing. Start off slow; the faster you increase your mileage (more so in running than walking, but...) the more likely you are to get hurt. And, I wouldn't even think of wearing sandles or crocs in DW. Too much impact on your feet that will make them HURT. Make sure to get good, comfortable shoes and some good socks. That is what will save your feet.
