I loved Brett Favre. I had a cat named Brett, for God's sake. I remember his party boy days before he got married, his vicodin addiction, his eventual maturity, the good games, the bad ones. I loved his enthusiasm and his fresh and pure love of the game. I was so proud he represented my team and my state. He was a true legend and was on track to go down in history with the original Super Bowl teams, Curly Lambeau, Vince Lombardi, etc. He WAS Wisconsin football.
But in Wisconsin, at the heart of it all we are Packer fans. There are favorite players that come and go, but at the end of the day it's the team we love. I don't know or even care any more what happened with the Packer administration. If he would have retired gracefully (the FIRST time) he would be a legend. Instead he really turned off a ton of fans who were so loyal. That pure love of the game and enthusiasm seems fabricated now. Was it? I don't know.
And now? Seriously - while there are a lot of logical reasons the Vikings are the team he would fit with outside Green Bay...he is "sticking it" to the fans. He is stomping on those who may have still cared about him after last year. And showing up again after the training camp is winding down and the preseason has started pours more doubt on that love of the game and really makes him seem like a spoiled princess. Does it bother me to see him in that purple helmet? Honestly, not really. Because Aaron Rodgers is my QB. And if he thinks the metrodome noise is deafening, wait until he takes the field in Lambeau in November. That open air stadium will be louder than any dome and it WON'T be the reception he's used to.
We have T-shirts here that make me laugh every time I see one..I wish I could find a photo. They are green with a white outlined state of Wisconsin. Then a #4. And the words: "We'll never forget you, Brent!"
I want that shirt.
