Is travel insurance worth the money?

A $2000 copay? Yikes! :scared1:

She spent 3 nights in a critical care unit with pneumonia. It was a very nic room though. Flat panel tv and internet access via an in-room terminal. The co-pay was 10% of the bill. :confused3

If you have AAA Premium, you have some sort of coverage also for trip interruptions/delays. This would be especially helpful if you are traveling by car and have to endure a mechanical breakdown that requires a shop repair.

We have AAA Plus, but I'm contemplating checking into the diff of upgrading since we are driving in August.

We decided to get the trip insurance this time because we are going during hurricane season. I checked and weather is covered. The cost for us was $200.00 for 3 adults and 2 children (the kids are actually free). I felt $40.00 per person was a small price to pay for peace of mind. Also, the insurance covers for things like loss/theft. So if my camera goes missing, I'm covered for that as well.

I compared the Disney offered insurance with insuremytrip.com and didn't find the cost to be all that cheaper when you actually compare the coverage you get. In fact I one of the policies was actually more expensive than Disney.

huge waste of money that is why insurance companies are rich.

Exactly. There really isn't any type of insurance that is "worth it". The companies are always going to come out ahead in the long run, so as individuals, the odds are that we will pay more for insurance than we'll ever get back from it.

So did I, last year, and then my travel agent (AAA) said the insurance doesn't cover weather-related cancellations!

So if you do decide to purchase it, make sure you know what your specific policy covers. Generally it covers cancellations for a last minute illness or a death in the family, stuff like that.

If you don't decide to purchase it, make sure you know and understand your airline's cancellation/ refund policies and also those of your hotel. That way, if something comes up, you'll know what you can expect to lose.

As others have said, the Disney insurance covers hurricane/weather related events. We're driving and I'm NOT driving through a hurricane or TS. (I've done it before to evacuate and it was horrible.) The insurance will allow us to extend hotels and stuff if we are stuck at disney can't travel.

That's not the only reason though. In the last two years we've had a LOT of bad luck - DH broke his back in a car accident and was immobile/out of work for 6 months, DD had her tonsils out, I had my gall bladder removed after two trips to the ER for pain, DD had an emergency appendectomy, and I was on bed rest for 10 weeks with my last pregnancy. We're all doing better now but I have learned the value of insurance when the unexpected happens!:rotfl:

I would rather pay the $130 up front and have the peace of mind than have something pop up and be out a couple thousand dollars for my vacation! Maybe for a weekend trip I wouldn't bother but we're going for 10 days so there is plenty of time for Murphy's law to kick in...
