Is ToT too frightening for a 6 y.o?

I'd not worried about the big drops. I'm worried about the general atmosphere--you know, what it's like when you're waiting in line, and the general setting of the place.

Is is a "fun" spooky like the Huanted Mansion, or just plain old "spooky" spooky?

Thanks! She wants to go on it, but from what we've read and seen, we're afraid that the atmosphere could give her nightmares.

It frightened my 5 yo, but I think it was the drops that got to him. My 8 yo could not get enough of it!

Yeah, the ride itself is not really "scary" but the drop is pretty intense, falling over and over again. My 22 year DW will never ride it again if that tells you anything.

You know your kid best. It is kind of spooky but not too much worse than Haunted Mansion. My then 5yo LOVED it but the 9 yr old had to be coerced just to walk through and wait for us with some friends. It's really more about how vivid their imaginations are and how carried away they get with it.

Also know that during the drops you're in the dark periodically - if that makes a difference.

The Twilight Zone stuff is kind of eerie, but my plan with DD5 this December is to just play down that "silly stuff".... I'll tell her she can close her eyes too... like when you're in the staging area and they show a video.... and when you're going thru the hallways and the Twilight Zone effects are everywhere. As for the ride, she'll love that, so I'll just explain to her that we need to get through the scary stuff to get to the ride.

The outside part of the line winds through the garden. The inside of the hotel isn't particularly scary. Once inside the pre-show, picture being crammed together like in Haunted Mansion's stretching room. Darkness, some thunder and lightning, and watching the story of the hotel on the tv. After that, the line reforms in a boiler room area; again, not too scary. Then head to the service elevators.

Overall I would say it is meant to be spookier than the Haunted Mansion, but many of the "scary" effects are the same. Aside from the drops, the rest of the ride (before the drops) includes some more rain, a lot of darkness, some special lighting effects, loud sounds, and some holographic ghost images.

I think the preshow and the ride are pretty creepy. I thought that it would be too much for my DD6 but she rode it 3 times. I reassured her that it was all pretend and she was fine. She is pretty brave when it comes to rides but not necessarily scary situations.

My DD princess: (5 at the time) rode it for the first time in Jan. 2005. She said she liked it but she didn't want to ride again. We had explained everything that she would see and feel on the ride beforehand, but we failed to mention that "her butt would come off the seat!" :( She didn't like that part. We had previously been as far as being seated on the ride before we exited-just as the doors were closing! One other time we got out of line before entering final elevator. I always let her decide if she wants to go. We have gotten off a couple of rides over the past few years-sometimes she changes her mind if she likes a ride from 1 week to the next.

We have exited the Matterhorn, Haunted Mansion, and of course, ToT. Only once did she ride a ride she absolutely hated. It was Back to the Future at Universal. She was about 4 1/2. She chanted during the entire ride "I want to get off! I had to console her until it was over. She recovered as soon as we got off, I on the other hand still feel guilty-I didn't remember it being so "jerky" The jerkiness of rides seems to be the main factor for her.

On this trip, we'll be riding some new rides for her. She's turning 6 this trip. She has recently decided she's "A roller coaster girl" So we'll be going on Splash and Thunder for the 1st time (with her). She rode TT last time and loves it! One of her new favs.

My advice is play it by ear, tell them what to expect, and that it won't last forever. Also, one of you party should be ready to exit, if needed, up to the last minute.

Have a great time. 51 days and counting! :cheer2: :cheer2:

My DD was 6 1/2 last year when we went and she rode ToT over 10 times...she just loved it but she also loved Rock'n Roller Coaster which is way to scary for me...so if you child likes to be scared then she will love it if not then I would say skip it :cool1:

Howdy,

It all depends on the child. My DD was 3 1/2 when she first rode ToT and she loved it (She's a thrill ride junkie). All the castmembers were so impress with her and how brave she was, 1 CM even gave her a pin. When we rode it the second time there was a group of 3 teenage girls that were scared and Sarah said " Don't be afraid girls, it's fun."

All she talks about is going back and going on it again and again when we go in December.

Enjoy,
Frank :wizard:

My sister didn't think her 5 yo was ready back in May, but my sister did let her ride Splash Mountain, which she liked.

My son was a new 6 year old last year and he went on it. He is not generally very adventuous but, is brave for movies (like Harry Potter, Indiana Jones). He was a little shaken up and said he did not care to go on it again but, seemed glad he went. We purchased the picture they take when you drop. It was pretty funny...he was screaming his head off!

I'd say if he is gutsy in some department he should be fine. If he his pretty delicate, I'd pass.

We LOVE the Muppet Show at MGM, its a MUST see. Any six year old would love it! I love it!

Have a great trip!!!!

My DD first rode TOT when she was four years old. She loved it! It is her favorite ride. As soon as she got off, we got on line again. If it were up to her, she would ride all day. But hey, she was riding Goofy's Barnstormer when she was 2! Her first time on TOT, she also rode with her 5 year old friend who never wants to go on it again. As soon as she got off, she decided she hated it. I guess it depends on the kid.

I asked my DD to help answer the question:
"TOT is a little scary. My stomach went a little bit up and down a little too fast. But I love the up and down part. And I love how my friend and cousin tried it out. Try it out. You might like it, or you might not like it."

Depends on the child. My 7 yr old loved it. But my other daughter who just turned 5 would have been terrified.
The atmosphere is a little more serious than HM, but overall, I don't think it's any more frightening. I think if she is ok with HM, she'd probably do fine on ToT. Assuming she can handle the falling part, that is.

DD was 6 last year when she rode it. She didn't care much for the storyline. She also pulled her Santa hat over her face before HM barely started. :)
Despite all that - she loves ToT. Went 3 times in a row & would have kept going back if we'd let her.

My 6 y.o. DD was determined to ride with her 18 y.o. brother after going through the first part of ride(rest of us took the chicken exit before the actual ride)---absolutely nothing we could say would change her mind so her dad went with her as well. She was absolutely terrified beyond belief! DH said the drops are what got her, he said its a good thing it ended when it did as she was beginning to "freak"out and DH was worried about her. He said she was lifting off her seat about a good 10 inches(it was his guess) and that really scared her as she thought she was going to fall out. She was trembling and "ghost white" when she got off----I guess it all depends on the kids but mine didn't handle it well at all.

It really just depends on the child. DS was 6 the first time he rode it and absolutely loves it,but he does all the coasters, can't wait till he's tall enough to do Hulk at US! now my DD is 12 and was a little freaked out by the drops

I'd work my way up to ToT, try some smaller ones like Splash Mtn, then do HM, Space Mtn, see how those go first, then try ToT
