HI Dis/Wish friends,

I thought I heard this somewhere......after jogging for 30 minutes, the fuel you'll be using is your stored fat and so you'll lose weight rapidly.

Is this true???

Thanks!

I have read that it's important to exercise longer than 30 minutes, if you can. Sorry, I don't remember where. I'm not sure on the burning fat. I've noticed personally a big change when I started getting over that 30 minute hump. Now, the knowledge of that keeps me going after 30 minutes is up!

From this months Shape: quoting from 2004 Shape: Watch the clock to lose weight. In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Assoc., women who racked up at least 200 cardio minutes a week for 18 months lost nearly 14 percent of their total body weight. Those who accumulated fewer than 150 mintues reduced their weight by less than 5 percent.

No matter how, it is always calories in must be less than calories out.

Exercise will help tone and strengthen the muscles making you feel healthier and in turn allow for more efficient ability to burn that fuel (food) you give yourself.

My DH's heart doc told him 60 min/day to get his body using the extra calories is a good goal. That does not mean if all you have to give is 30 minutes that you should not bother. All movement, whatever the increase will help.

In one of the gyms our sons would go to compete there was a huge banner that read If you rest, you rust...so true.

Good luck with your moving along and healthy eating choices.

My doctor insists that if you don't do 35 minutes of cardio, you haven't gotten your heart where it needed to be. I have finally reached over that time but it took a few weeks to get there. Just keep on going, and it will happen.

I like the banner qoute about rusting. It makes sense.

Good luck!

Wendy

That is not true at all. You can get your rate where it needs to be in a matter of minutes if not less. It all depends on the intensity of the workout.

This topic is debated constantly. For many years low intensity cardio, like walking or a light jog for a long durnation, 45-60 minutes, was considered the best way to burn fat. Recently, HIIT(High Intensity Interval Training) has become popular and there is pretty overhelming research and testing to prove this is a far better alternative.

With HIIT, you work in internals of moderate and high intensity for shorter durations, like 20 minutes. The major benefit with HIIT is your body will continue to burn calories for several hours after you finish working out. This does not happen when you just go out for a brisk walk for an hour.

Like everything else, different things work for different people. I always suggest mixing it up when it comes to cardio. One day walk or jog for an hour, the next day try HIIT for 20 minutes if you pressed for time. That way you get the best of both worlds.
