Is this the "norm" now? Professional hairdo for Communion?

Went to a Communion recently for the first time in 11 years and the little girl had a professional manicure and pedicure and hairdo. I know my nieces did not (they are now 18, 19 and 21) and I sure didn't. Just wondering if this was the "norm" now.

I wouldn't say it was the "norm" at this point but, as time rolls on, I notice more things getting "over the top."

It's exactly the OPPOSITE here. They have scaled down Communions a lot. No cameras, no video, they don't even want the kids to dress up a lot. They started this about 2 years ago and that is the norm now for all the Catholic schools in our city.

My DD has a "professional" hairdo for First Communion. That's because I'm terrible at doing hair, and she had a veil and wanted it to look a certain way. NO WAY did she get a manicure or pedicure! They're supposed to look like little girls, not beauty queens!
BTW, my friend happens to do hair and so we went to her house on First Communion morning to get it done.

I would have to say it is the norm. All of my 3 nieces had theirs done. Last year my niece graduated from 8th grade (Catholic school) and all the girls had their hair done, a lot were wearing makeup, and there were some fancy, fancy dresses (many of them strapless). I hate to say it but they looked like miniature hookers. :rolleyes2

My DD made her First Communion a few weeks back and it certainly is not the norm. However, I think some little girls really look forward to this day to be able to wear a beautiful white dress, white gloves and a veil. My DD did not have anything like that done but I don't see anything wrong if the girls enjoys it.

My DD on the other hand would rather be playing outside getting dirty then wearing a white dress. ;)

I had a professional hairdo at mine and that was in the 70's.

My DD had her hair done last year... but I had a house full of relatives that I knew I would have to feed breakfast so DH brought her while I was getting food on. I knew I wouldn't have that much time.

Plus when I do it... it falls out, the hairdressers get it to stay :goodvibes

Yes I saw many girls with professional hairdo's as I looked on....fighting with my dd just to wear the dress and the veil!!!:lmao:

A lot of the girls in our kids' classes had their hair done for First Communion. They were appropriate girl hairstyles though, lots of curls, etc. DD had her hair trimmed a few days before First Communion and our hair stylist showed me some options for DD's hair but I did the style myself, but it looked sort of professional :teeth: . None of the dresses have been inappropriate at any of the First Communions I have attended.

I just went to my cousin's Confirmation and she had a profesionally done, it was so cute though, she looked liked to be the only kid there that had her hair done.

I haven't been to a First Communion in about 4 years, but there were a lot of professional hairstyles at that one.

I hate that kind of thing.

I hope it's not the norm. I think it makes little girls look too mature and too grown up. I don't like the appearance of a seven year old looking 13. And if they were wearing makeup with the up-do's, just kill me now. ;)

I agree. Especially with the nails done too. Like child modeling, it just has an ick-factor to me.

I had my hair curled for my first communion (14 years ago). I really think First Communions are over the top in general though, why spend $$ on a white dress or suit/shoes? It's always seemed kind of counter-Christian to me, spending ridiculous amount of money on an outfit for a sacrament. (I think boys have it worse, at least you can probably shove the girl into the dress again)

Our son had his First Communion in April. Some of the girls were way dressed up, others looked like we did back forever ago when we made ours. The young lady behind me looked like a mini-bride (actually, though, she was the tallest in the class, and nearly as tall as I am). She had professionally styled hair incorporating her veil headpiece, wore a floor length gown, and heels. Looked like she had on some makeup, too. I would say she was the only one who was "over the top". The others were just nicely done, all of them, whether mom had done her hair or if she had been professionally coiffed.

When I made my Communion many years ago I don't remember one girl having their hair professionally done. Or any of them having over the top dresses. I went to a Communion two weeks ago and just about every girl had their hair all done up in some fancy updo. Most also had heels on, nails done and makeup on. JMHO, but for an 8 year old girl, I just don't get it.

I did my daughters hair, and she wore NO make up. (She was 8!)

On the other hand, I did the hair for my friend's 2 daughters, 3 years apart. Does that count? :thumbsup2

Sometimes parents just can't do hair. We have kids who get it done for recital--but when the teachers are particular and a mom can't even do a pony tail--they do what they gotta do--but it is something basic that gets done).

I'll do my own kids hair, thank you very much! (of course for communion we don't have a choice---we have ours at mass on Sunday. Nobody open!).
