Is this the norm...? (Banking question)

Just curious...

If you want to make change... say a $100.00 into some $20's and $10's and $5's... do I have to be a regular bank customer with an account???

I suppose it depends on each bank's individual rules.

Logically, I'd say no but, realistically, these days, goofy rules abound!

My bank would do it for you, but others may not. I think it depends on the prevelance of counterfeiting in your area.

We wouldn't charge you for it, but if you came in with coins, we'd charge you for exchanging it into currency. I'm just saying this, because some banks might want to charge you for breaking a large bill(s).

one time i needed a bunch of pennies and i was able to walk into a random bank down the street (bank of america, maybe?) and get them.

Most banks around here will only service their own customers.

The bank I used to work for would only make change for customers officially due to counterfeiting. Of course, we still did it many times as long as everything seemed legit.

The bank I used to work for was the same as ead79's We would only do it for customers BUT if it 'looked' ok and seemed ok we would do it. Just a personal call.

Well, I went to a bank, and tried it, and a very crusty old lady, in a very snooty voice asked me if I was a regular customer. I said no, that I just needed change made for a larger bill, and she said, basically, to take a hike. (not in so many words, but was most unpleasant...)

Oh well, off to MY bank I go.

HA! That thought did cross my mind!

Expect scrutiny if you are trying to buy a pack of gum with a $100 bill. A cousin who owned a convenience store would just tell you to take the gum. It wasn't worth it to him to make change in case the $100 was counterfeit.
