Is this tacky?

We stay in condos with a kitchen, so it's not an issue, but were I to stay in a room, I would have no problem with bringing a cooler. I agree, however, that there is no harm in being discrete. If you can go out to the car and get it later, and take it up to the room without making a show of it, so much the better. It's not just about saving money, it's a matter of convenience to have the items you need in the room, accessible, when you feel like having a cool drink or a snack that requires refrigeration.

But then I think it's tacky...cell phones in restaurants and movies. etc.

no lie! i'm with you on that...last fall during my first spa experience ever, there was a woman who, i kid you not, was making call after call on her cell phone in the GF spa LOUNGE! I was trying to relax and wait for my massage and had to listen to that. I wanted to take it from her and "drop" it into the jacuzzi. i told the concierge about it after and she was going to forward a suggestion to management that they make the spa a cell phone free zone.

i think stuff like that is a lot more tacky than taking a cooler! course I echo the 'side of beef' sized comment...a huge one at the most deluxe resort might look a little out of place, but hey, you know what? if you have a family to feed (some have a child with special dietary limitations) then more power to you.

of all the things people do at WDW that could be considered tacky (talking on cell phones in line for rides for no good reason, taking booze into the MK in water bottles, smoking outside designated areas etc.) seeing someone wheel a cooler thru the GF lobby would be the least of my concerns.

maybe its cause i'm disabled, i wouldn't question why people needed one. likely i'd think maybe there was refrigerated medicine in it.

but if your kids like cereal in the morning and you don't want to spend 5 bucks a bowl at the food court...can't say as i blame ya. me, i don't haul extra food cause with all the medical paraphenalia i have to haul with us it's just not worth it to my husband LOL.

to me, tacky is people who stay a week in a deluxe and then are so cheap that they complain about tipping the maids. not a box of cereal for the kiddies.

have a great trip! :earsgirl:

My two cents! We stayed at the Poly 2 years ago. I was a little apprehensive too bringing in snacks, etc. but with 3 little kids, well, you know how many times they like to snack. We not only bought a cooler for drinks, we bought a refrig. cooler (the kind you can plug into the car or wall). Only cost $20.00 more than renting the room fridge for the week and now we use all the time. We did drive so didn't have to bring this stuff on the plane. I brought a suitcase full of snacks, breakfast items, milk, beer, wine, soda etc. I was embarassed when the valet started loading everything in our van onto his cart but he was great, said he seen it all. Even when my youngest said his Stuffed Dog "Nico" just had to go. The valet just strapped him to the rest of our stuff, no problem. It turned out great to have the drinks and snacks because we stayed in the Tahiti Longhouse which was the furthest away from the Main House and Food Court.

You are on vacation! Don't worry about bringing milk & a cooler! Cereal I could understand but MILK? Having to change the ice and maintain it's cold temperature to keep the milk from spoiling? That is too much work for me.

Target sells these perfect pre-packaged cereal bowls for traveling. Frosted Falkes, Rice Krispies, all packaged in a disposable bowl for 25 cents a piece! I would buy a few of them and bring a few spoons along. Just head down to the food court or resort gift shop and grab enough milk for the morning. Milk might be more expensive there but, you're on vacation.

As I said before, I would not worry about bringing a cooler but, I always bring the kids favorite snacks and juice boxes to have ready in the room. I just hide them in a big Disney tote just incase the cooler police are watching;) .

I'm not sure I think it's tacky, but the last thing I want to do on vacation is lug a cooler full of food (or even step foot in a grocery store for that matter). My time is precious, so it's just not appealing to me (or hubby) to spend it shopping and lugging food. That being said, we always pack a few snack items in our carrry-on luggage before leaving home that we keep in the room, especially for our daughter who likes to graze. We know going in that the food/beverages will be expensive, but we're trading cost for convenience and time savings. It's a personal decision in the end.

CindyBella,

My sentiments exactly. We have done the same thing for our children in the past. It has never been difficult to find milk in the hotel. The DVC makes life even easier!

It sounds as though the majority of people who bring coolers travel by car and use them in the car too. For them it is very practical. I really can't imagine however walking through the airport with one especially with all the heightened security. Then you would have to find a place to put it in the airplane and lug it around to the car rental and hotel. That is not my idea of a vacation either. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

:wave2:

Sorry guys I drive to WDW and have that convenience to bring the cooler and YES I DO DO THE ICE AND MILK THING!!! Cant handle paying $2 bucks for a pint of milk.

We also have to take meications in the morning! Before we leave for the parks .

Well, last summer we stayed at the Polynesian. I knew we were going to need a lot of water/juice boxes. So, we ordered those from netgrocer and had it delivered to the Polynesian. I bought one of those collapsable coolers with a heavy plastic liner that zips inside the main cooler. Filled it with ice every other day and kept our water/juice boxes in it. It worked wonderfully. When we were done, just emptied it out, folded it up and stuck it back in our checked luggage. Now, we're staying at BWV in 3 weeks. I'm planning on bringing down some breakfast stuff...cereal, pop-tarts, peanut butter and jelly/jam (in plastic jars!), crackers. Do I have to carry those on with me? So much easier to put in the checked stuff.

I have full expectation to have the car service do a grocery stop for a case of water, maybe a good bottle of wine and some of DS favorite snacks. I usually get a fridge in the room. Its not necessarily about saving $ but convenience.

Why is it tacky for a deluxe  Is it any different if you are staying value or moderate?

avoid the ice and buy a small electric cooler. We have a small one (size of a minivan between the seats console) and a large one.
We buy the ulta pasturized milk in either the single serving or quart size. Then we don't have to worry about spoilage either.

it is shelf stable and can be found w/near the powdered and canned milk.

Oh no, now my dh has been given an idea. Now he wants to bring our own little mini fridge into the room :earseek: :faint: into our room to save money and have convienence.

Oh so if you see a man bringing this little sucker along and a wife walking like she has no idea who this man is, please, don't laugh :teeth:

"you cant please everybody, so just please yourself"

We usually always drive, and thus always have a cooler!! I like my $13 brand of Champagne, dont like paying $20 for it - so I'm taking a big honkin carry on bag and putting that in their (and yes I can just imagine being too tired to even drink it!!) Checked on the price of collapsable coolers at Sam's $20, but that's $20 I cant spend in Disney *g

Just love reading all the funny... oops all the opinions of everyone here!! I'm out to please our family, not all y'all, so I'll be havin snacks in my room!!

I was going to ask this in a separate thread but seems like it will fit in with this one. We are considering staying at Yacht or Beach Club next trip and will be traveling with a ten month old. Is there a place at Y & B to buy fresh milk for the baby? We don't want to try to keep milk from home cold using a cooler.

I assume you wil lbe using formula at 10 months. Just buy the powdered formula and some bottled water.

I thought that too but my daughter's doctor told her they start changing babies over to whole milk at about seven to eight months old now. I figured we wouldn't have to worry about that on our trip but I guess we will.

we are not big on breakfast, either. we usually go to the gift shop and pick up a box of assorted doughnuts for $5 and eat those for breakfast. They last a few days, and it saves a ton of money!!
