Can I start out with a custom wedding, and if I decide it is not going to work out, go to an intimate? Is this possible? TIA!

I imagine you could, Courtney. Since your wedding is far away, you could work with a SM to get a proposal for a custom wedding. Then, you could decide if it is in your budget. The custom gals might have a different opinion or view.

We thought about doing that the other way - Intimate to a Custom - but decided the Intimate was the best for us and I'm glad we did!

I should think you can change so long as you do so before you sign that all-important contract ;)

That is what we did. We spoke to a SM when we were down last summer and got an estimate of everything that we wanted. When it came down to it, though, we decided to go with an intimate as it was so easy to plan (DF and I both teach and we are remodeling a house, which leaves very little time at the end of the day).

Get an estimate, start from there. I am sure you and your DF will pick what is best for you.... pixiedust:

I'm sure you could talk to an SM about going custom, and as long as you don't sign a custom contract before switching to an intimate it wouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure how Disney would handle it if you wanted to switch after your contract was signed.

Like many others, I went from an Intimate to a Custom. It was no big deal (except for my pocketbook, of course). ;)

Over the years, I have read of a few couples who went from the Custom to the Intimate category. That was something that was directly handled by the Fairy Tale Weddings folks. If you think you might fall into that category, definitely discuss it with your Sales Manager before you sign any contracts.

One concern that comes to mind is what happens if you were planning a weekend wedding (which is only allowed for the Custom category) and you wanted to switch to the Intimate category? My uneducated guess is that you would have to switch your wedding date to the Monday through Thursday timeframe. That is a question that the Fairy Tale Weddings folks should be able to answer.

No matter what category you choose, I hope you have fun planning your wedding.

My advice is that when your EM calls you the first time tell them that while you are currently looking at a custom (or intimate, whatever you decide), there is a chance you may end up switching to the other depending on budget, guest count, etc. I'm sure they won't have a problem with it as you still want Disney no matter what, it's not like your saying "I'm pretty sure I want a Disney wedding, but can you plan it, get me an estimate and then I am probably going to decide to get married at home". (By the way, I know there have been some issues on the board with misunderstandings, so just wanted to say that I didn't mean to offend anyone who is trying to decide between a Disney wedding or not, I know you're in that boat right now WDWbride2007, just making my point about it being ok to switch between the two types of Disney weddings and that EMs won't mind!)

No problem, Tinkerbelle14... =) I totally understand your point and I agree with you. I had originally contemplated a custom wedding. When I really thought about it, I knew that Raul and I were not going to have $12K for just wedding day events. We also want an outside photographer, so the grand total for one day would have been around $15K. This was aside from rehearsal dinner, wedding rings, attire, airplane tix, hotel, etc. So, we decided that we would either have an intimate wedding or a wedding off-property in Orlando. Courtney, if you think that your budget will really allow the wedding day expenses and extras, you should definitely explore the possibilites with your EM. Good luck and keep us informed!

When we were having a ton of family drama, we almost decided to elope on our own (oh, that would have been SO nice!). I called our Wedding Planner and they said it might be possible. We did have a signed custom contract, but depending on how far out you are, as long as they get your money, I don't think they would be too moved to push for the custom. Yes, it's a contract, but it's also one of the most important days of your life. So they can't make you do anything! Besides, if you're far enough out, the MOST you'd lose would be the deposit.

Contracts change though, so don't take my word for it.
