We're thinking of doing St. Maarten on our own. The big plan is to get a cab from phillipsburg to the butterfly farm, then from the farm to Marigot to look around a while then from Marigot back to phillipsburg to finish off whatever's left of the day. Will cabs go from the farm to Marigot, or will they only go back to the dock? Anyone have any idea how much this might cost -- I see passporter lists the fares as around $15/one way for 2 persons. I'm thinking for DH and I then, for the 3 legs of the trip it would be around $45? Does that sound right? TIA for any help.

Hi,

Now this may not help with your question, but my wife and I flew to Anguilla and took a ferry to St. Maartin for the day. We rented scooters in Marigot and rode them all the way around the island. We arrived around 11 and returned around 3. It was a total blast and really easy to get around! Just an idea!

Or rent your own Jeep! We did this with our 4 kids and rode around the whole island with the top down and had a blast.

It only cost around $50-60.

Now if you are not comfortable with driving on your own the taxi drivers are very accomodating and will stop wherever you want and return when you want them too.

We spent a great week in St. Maarten last year and enjoyed the whole island.

St. Martin is so small that you can certainly see the entire island in a day.

We rented a car for $45 and went all over the island for the day, with plenty of time to spare. The guy at the car rental booth gave us a map and marked some of the "must see" areas for us. The island is so small that we almost missed some of the turns because the thought "that couldn't be it--we just got on this road." We have joked ever since that the map was to scale!! :hyper:

Rent a jeep! DH and I did this on our honeymoon. It was such a fun way to go around St. Maarten. We are probably going to do the same next time since we are going with a large group. Lots of fun. Wind in your hair, warm air.

What you are talking about is exactly what we did. I dont remember the cost, but it was a nice air conditioned van that the driver took a lot of pride in, not an open air wagon that we got on in St Thomas. We took one to the butterfly farm, and then they called us another one to go to Marigot, and then she waited for us while we got pastries, and then took us back to the ship.
