No, I'm not going to show a picture of an infected foot or a sick animal, I'm talking about my daughter's spelling list. She's in the first grade. Her list was:
  • taxicab
  • backpack
  • haystack
  • packed
  • crackerjack
  • draft
  • after
  • paragraph
  • basket
  • habitat
Now call me crazy (shut up Tig) but this seems a little advanced for a first grader:confused3 . She doesn't even know what some of this stuff is.

Am I just out of touch? I hate spelling, maybe I blocked this stuff out of my memory.

No! My DD's in the first grade and her words are no more than 4 letters at this time. Of course, they just started spelling this semester, so they're easing them into it. She feels pretty good because she's aced them every time. I told her, if she didn't, we'd have a problem. They're way too easy! Crackerjack??? Why does a first grader need to know how to spell crackerjack? :confused3

Seems advanced. My son's spelling list is 3- and 4-letter words.

She's been melting down all night because she's not getting the list perfect. It's SO fun drilling a neurotic on spelling words. Sort of like sticking a hot poker in my eye repeatedly.

She struggled the most on crackerjack and basket. Just when she'd get the "ck" we'd throw a "sk" at her.:crazy2:

My first grader words this week are:tube, cube, mule, tune, rude, and huge

I get two weeks at a time next week is sick, trick, brick, truck, duck, and slick

They justed started bonus words so they have a total of ten but they are surprise word and normally go with the theme of the week or is the past tense of a spelling word.

Good luck

Is your DD already reading? Maybe she's in a higher level group. It looks similar to what my DD had in first grade.

Okay, it's been a loooooong time since I had a first grader, but I'm thinking it's a little tough for that age.

Is she a good speller? Maybe she is getting the "robust" words. DD is a great speller, she did NOT get that from me! :lmao: and she always gets a harder list every week.

Try grouping them like this and see if it makes more sense to her.

* backpack * draft
* haystack * after
* packed
* crackerjack * paragraph
* basket

* habitat * taxicab

I too thought those to be a little too advance for a 1st grader, unless she is an excelled studdent

First, your crazy::yes:: ;)

The list seems a little advanced.

It seems a little advanced. I remember I learned 8 letter words in 2nd grade. I definitely know I learned how to spell "together" that year.

Sometimes teachers have "challenge" words- maybe this could be that list. Also, does the teacher develop his/her own list, or do they have a language arts program? At my school, we have a Harcourt program where the spelling, reading, and language are all linked together. Have all her words this year been so difficult?

Is your daughter in public school? Those words look too hard for a first grader.

When my son was in first grade he struggled. I think those words are difficult, unless she is in the advanced group. I would have your daughter practice for a reasonable amount of time...and then...life goes on. Don't make a big deal about her missing works...make a big deal about how many she gets correct. Trust me, the stress isn't worth it!

My son is in 2nd grade, and those are harder than the words he gets - this week's words include wish, fish, each, teach, path, both, etc - they are working on sh, ch, th endings this week.

I think he would only get words like that if they were vocabulary words taken from a story they read in class, and then they wouldn't be tested on them for spelling, just for vocab. understanding.

My third grader has a spelling pre-test on Monday. They don't know what the words will be ahead of time. If they miss one or more words on the pre-test they will be tested on those words again on Friday but if they get a 100% they get "challenge" words instead. The "challenge" words are considerably more difficult than the basic words. Your daughter's list looks like a "challenge" word list to me. After seeing one of her classmates sobbing during a challenge word test my daughter intentionally screws up the pre-test if she knows all the words. :rolleyes:

Wow. Those words are tough for a first grader. My ds is in second and his words this week were hay, play, great, tray, trail etc. I have a 2cnd grader, a 5h grader and an 8th grader and I have noticed a change in the curriculum over the years. It is getting tougher and of course, my little one is the one with a learning disability, lol.

They did call these "challenge" words, but my daughter is a perfectionist... I have NO idea where she gets that from. She is totally stressed out and has been crying all night and practicing. We don't want her to (we, quite frankly, don't care if she knows these words at this point). She must have written the words over and over about 50 times each. The best part is, this is now a weekly thing (this is the first week). UGH! Every week we get to do this.

Someone asked if she is reading, she is. She moved into full-fledged reader with comprehension just in the last few months. It's been neat to watch her world open up. I can't wait to start reading the classics with her. She is finishing up Heidi now.

who ordered the infected foot :confused3
