Is this inappropriate?

Got a question for y'all.

I've been recently looking into various exercise programs because I'm tired of being so tired all the time, being told by every doctor I go to to "exercise", being so tense that my back hurts just from tension, etc, etc. So I'm looking into the various programs. But I'd like to do something with my friends, too, since I know they're looking, too. They, like me, don't have the motivation to go constantly once the new wears off, so it has to be something fun.

I found a yoga class that I'm enjoying, but due to the hours it's hard to make it to during a regular week, and my friends don't want to do that. I'll still go when I can, but I thought something that might be fun is country-and-western line dancing. You know, the type you can do without a parnter? My DH does NOT dance -- bump that NOT up a few point sizes, bold it twice, and put it in bright red. So if I'm going to do any dancing, it needs to be something you don't need a partner for.

My friends said that sounded like fun to them and they'd be interested in C&W line dancing if we can find a class anywhere. Mentioned it to my mom and she said "NO WAY! It is totally inappropriate for a married woman to go to a line dancing class without her husband!"

Erm.... we aren't looking at going to bars and singles clubs and that kind of thing, we're looking for a class. Like at a gym or rec center? We were specifically looking at the gym for the office. I also wouldn't be going by myself, we'd attend when all of us could go, so there'd be 3 of us.

So what do y'all think? Is it inappropriate for a female to go to a dance class that does *not* involve partners *without* her partner but with friends? Is that looking for trouble? I can agree with her that going to bars or clubs would be asking for trouble, or trying to go to something that requires partners, but a class?

Go for it Rajah, and drag your Mom with you. She might enjoy it! ;) :)

Better yet, go (without your Mom), and don't bother mentioning it to her again. :)

Nope I don't think its inappropriate at all as long as you don't become really good and start "clubbing" and leaving DH at home.

John and I country line danced a few years in our early 20s and LOVED IT! It is sooo much fun!!!! We would still be doing it if the place hadn't closed down.

If you and your husband don't have a problem with it, why should you care if anyone else does?

Of COURSE it's not inappropriate. :)

There are plenty of dance classes out there where married people go without partners. Heck, there are classes that are partner DANCES where you can go alone and get partnered up and that is not inappropriate EITHER, plenty of married people do that if the spouse does not want to dance. It's just dancing, not sex. :)

I can't imagine where your mom got that idea.

Thanks. :) I didn't think it was, but I do admit to being naieve and wasn't sure if I was missing something or not. :)

I think she got that idea from some old-fashioned ideals (dancing once you're married is no-no) and that's where a friend of hers met her new husband. But that friend went dancing *specifically* looking for guys (her previous husband had recently passed away). So since one single woman found a husband while dancing, that means all women are targets of men while at a dance class. I think she's right when it comes to clubs, but not for a class.

Even in a dance class that has couples, a lot of the time you don't always dance with your spouse. The instructor will mix up the couples. This is to make sure you both learn and one partner isn't dominating the other.

Go, have a good time, and exercise. Not inappropriate at all.

I would not worry about it! Go and enjoy, life is too short.
What if you miss this opportunity and you always regret it?
That's the way I look at life. Do I want to go to this movie alone or miss it. If no one else goes with me, and I want to see it, I go!

<font color=navy>Shoot - I used to go C&W dancing every night. It's THE BEST type of exercise there is. The time goes by quickly, too.

I don't think it's inappropriate at all. :)

My husband would just be thankful I wasn't asking him to go. Go and have a great time!

I occasionaly go to the club for girls night out with my friends, and I dont think there is anything wrong with that!! We go to laugh and have a good time!! it is plain to see I am a married woman from the ring on my finger! My hubby does not mind and I think that is all that matters if your partner is not bothered by it then go enjoy!!

Thanks again. :) I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who thought a class wasn't inappropriate.

Now if only we can find a C&W class that 1) isn't couples, 2) is nearby, and 3) is at a schedule we can all make.

(Yes, JTB, it does. At least it does since I *love* to dance)

Gee ... I even think it's appropriate even if you do go "clubbing". My DH and I danced for years and went to many Country dance bars. I never though twice about the women who only danced the line dances. They were having fun! Lessons are fun too, but not as fun as dancing in a club.

I'm just not a club person. Every club I've ever heard of is full of smoke. Smoke + asthma + allergy-to-cigarette-smoke = really, really bad. Add in doing something that makes you breathe that smoke even more = potential hospital visit.

Therefore, no clubs for me.

But I love dancing and love it even more with friends, so I'd love to do the class.
