Can I have a room only reservation, then have a package reservation?

Here's the situation: I have a package May 30-June 4 (free qs dining). We may or may not be able to drive down one day earlier on the 29th, so can I book a room only (using the 25% off discount) so I can hold the room. I won't know if we can make it on the 29th until a few days before the trip. If this is okay, do you think we can just stay in the same room? Its for CBR, if it matters. tia

Yep, it's allowed. And though I haven't ever done it myself, I've seen many threads on here from people who have -- they've said that Disney seems to make every effort to keep you in the same room.

Not a problem at all. Due to the way discounts sometimes fall, I've had to do this more than once. In fact, just this past Nov 26th-Dec 4th I had an AP discount for my first night, then used a bounceback deal for the next seven nights. I had to go back down the second morning to recheck back in, but they were able to let me stay in the same room, so it wasn't a big deal (took about five minutes to get a new room key). A couple of years ago though, I did the same thing and they made me switch rooms after that first night. Both times I was at the same resort (CSR).

Usually they will try to keep you in the same room, but occasionally you hear reports of where they made someone change rooms. I know MissyTara has reported that PORS made her change rooms, when she went down to recheck back in for the second part of her stay. At CSR they made me move to the opposite side of the resort (from Casitas 2 to Cabanas 8A). MissyTara has said that they kept her in the same building, just moved her to a different room after that first night.

Actually, the only time POR "made me" change rooms, it was for the better. I check in the Saturday after Thanksgiving and it is a busy check-out day. She had a ground floor riverview room (back then waterview could be anything) with a connecting door available, but the next day, the room next door would be available if I wanted it. It was a corner king bed room. ;)

It was well worth the move, because the first room I was in blocked the view of the water by the stairs. The next room was away from the stairs.

The other two times I have gotten discounts, and had to book the first day room only and the rest as a package, they didn't move me and both times the room was already available that morning.

When you make the reservations have them linked as "continuing reservations". When they see that they TRY to assign the same room, no guarantees though. When you check in for the first room night the front desk should be able to see your assigned room for the rest of your stay and at least let you know if you're scheduled for a room change. Still have to go to the front desk in the a.m. to check out/check in and get new room keys.

We've done it a couple times. Once was at POR and we had no problems staying in the same room. I did have to check in twice. (once for each reservation) The second time, we were actually at two different resorts, so not exactly the same thing. We got in late, after midnight, and stayed at Music where we were able to get a good discount and then walked over to Movies the next morning where we checked in for our package.
