Is there such a thing out there?

We are planning on a 8 day trip next June. We have several grandparents going with us. They are all in good health and I believe will do fine. But I am concerned with the amount of time they will spend standing. I am looking for some sort of small, portable chair. Something that just has a seat, no back or sides. Something that can fold up to the size of an umbrella so that it can fit into a back pack. Is there anything like that out there?

I've seen a few at my local outdoor outfitters. You might try at REI or places like that:

Sporting goods stores such as Dick's or DUnham's have what they call a 'golf' chair. It is a tripod with a small seat, that when folded turns into a lightweight cane. Hard to imagine but great idea. Good for preggie ladies as well. SHould cost around $25-30 I think.

Good luck.............

Last May I saw a lady waiting for the parade to start at MK. She had a chair like you're describing. It folded up into a cane, but unfolded into a little chair on a tripod. We got to talking about how neat it was and she said she bought it at a local sport store to use for her GS soccer games.

Target.com $13

They're small and lightweight. We've had these things for years! :thumbsup2

I'm pretty sure I've read that this type of thing isn't allowed at WDW. Of course, it may be the type of thing that's sporadically enforced like the "no wheeled backpack" rule. Anyone else heard/read that they're not allowed?

I haven't heard that, but I could totally understand why they might not allow such things.

There was a discussion of these on the disAbilities forum. I think Disney will allow them if needed by the individual. I looked at the one on Overstock.com. It looks a lot like an umbrella when it's folded up. I can't see why Disney wouldn't allow them. I am planning a trip with my 60-something parents in August and would like them to have these as well.

Two nights ago, I saw one of the portable stools at World Of Disney at DTD. It, of course, had the Disney logo on it, but was basically a little collapsible stool. They were $20. If World Of Disney is selling them, I'm sure they are allowed in the parks.

I was considering getting one so that I can use it to watch parades without sitting on the concrete for an hour or two.

I think I saw some at Target once.. you might want to check out a Super Target sometime, that's where I saw it!

I think that WDW's primary concern about these is that they not be used in ride lines; just think how badly it would slow down the lines if people were sitting/getting up/scooting the stool/sitting/getting up...

They could also be rather a hazard if there were an emergency evacuation, especially if folks walked away from them. I think that it has been verified that seat/canes are allowed for folks who need them.

BTW, the kind with the single leg that are meant to be pushed into the ground are known as a "shooting stick". The name is British, and goes WAY back.

Maybe you could rent a couple of wheelchairs and they could switch off when they needed a break. My mother used to use one and when she wanted to get up for a while she would let one of the kids ride and she would push because she could lean on the handles for balance. Now she has to use a walker if she walks so at Disney she uses her scooter all the time.

The odd thing is that Disney has just come out with their own version of these which they sell for $20 a piece at World Of Disney at DTD. I can't imagine they'd sell them expecting people not to use them in the parks. I plan to get one for myself. It sure beats sitting on the concrete for the parades!

I'll try to snap a picture of one next time I'm at DTD.
