Is there such a thing as too many points?

I know this is probably a crazy question with the whole addonitis and all, but does anyone feel that they bought too many points when they joined. We were originally going to buy 250 points at BLT, but since we are eligible for the webinar discount, we originally decided to up it to 270. However since a 1 BR MK view is 272 points per week during Adventure Season and a 1 BR standard view during Magic Season is also 272 points, I've decided to up this to 275. I want to have the flexibility to go for a week during anytime of the year, however with the cost of airfare we probably will not head down more than once a year, and given school schedules may not always be able to go for a full 7 nights. I'm thinking we should still do the 275 for flexibility, but I also don't want to spend more than I need to. Any thoughts?

after the 2010 changes, most people think they bought too few!

the most common issue i've seen is that people wish they had split up their contracts. if you want to buy 275 pts, i'd buy 160 and then add 2-3 smaller contracts on top.

(another thing that is important to understand is getting a good use year.)

My guide seemed a little reluctant to do more than 2 contracts. I was thinking of doing a 150 and a 125.

Great advice (above) on splitting the contracts. Not only do the smaller contracts fetch higher prices in resale, but also gives you much better flexibility should you ever wish to downsize your membership.

Whatever amount you do - make sure you split your points across multiple contracts, that way if you decide you want to change anything you don't have to sell all your points in order to do something.

I've heard of people doing 160 and 4 25 pointers. If your guide is reluctant just insist on it. It can be done and you should have things the way you want it. Not sure if the first one needs to be 160 or not, but for anything over that you should definitely break it out into not more than 50 pts.

:thumbsup2 I agree that UY is so key. I have been planning our next 4 years worth of vacations  and could not be happier with our UY. Originally I thought 170 points would not be enough but having a UY of December will work out amazingly because of the ability to bank, months we travel, and starting out with a loaded contract. :woohoo:

When the dues start to rise and you get that annual bill for the dues, well, yes, you can have too many points. We sold off 175 points (two contracts) because we didn't want to pay so much in dues every year.

Talk to your guide about splitting because it can definitely be done...I just purchased last week after watching the Webcast and took advantage of the better incentive...I purchased 150 BLT points and 50AKV points (200 total). I split my BLT points into a 100 pt contract and 2- 25 point contracts. So at the end of the day, I had 4 contracts. It can definitely be done...if your guide won't tell him your changing guides. You are the customer and you're spending a chunk of change so they need to work with you and not against you especially when others such as myself are getting it that way. All I did was ask and was told sure, we can do it...:thumbsup2

My only concern is the cost associated with transfering each account. I have a special needs child and my goal is to transfer the contracts to her trust if anything happens to us. Also, from thinking about it, I think breaking it up poses some additional problems as to how to break it up to ensure that you have enough points. Right now I can't see wanting another resort other than BLT. I was thinking about possibly buying a contract at HHI down the road, but not another resort at WDW. The only exception to this would be if they build a DVC at Poly. If that were to happen, I think I would dump the 125 point contract and buy another 150 points at poly. I'm also not sure if the smaller contracts make as much sense at BLT because the point charts are higher. Lastly, once the points are paid for, the extra fees for another 25 points are not all that great. I am really stressing over how to split the contracts. Anyone have any suggestions givien my plans?

If you break up the contracts when you buy originally, they will all be under the same member # and one will be the "master" and the others will be add on.

If all the contracts are BLT, then you will be able to use all those points at 11 months, as though it was one big contract, and won't have to transfer points between them.

The only time you can't combine points from the same home resorts at 11 months without a transfer is if they are different UY's under different member #s.

I have two BLT contracts--one for 130 and one for 50 and when I book my trip in September for Aug 2010, I will be able to use all the points at one time.

Good luck!

No, what I meant was that my guide said that there is a charge if you want to transfer your contracts to another person (i.e. the trust) He said the charge is per contract, so if you don't sell and you want to transfer the contract to someone else, you will need to pay a fee on each contract.

Oh, sorry, I thought you were talking about points. Should put my reading glasses on!!!

Do what you want, you can do more than 2 if you want for 275 and they will get over it. Better to bug the guide and get the best contract situation. The only down side is if you go to change the deeds later as you have to do each separately. For 275, the ideal would likely be 100-100-50-25 or similar but they may not allow you do do less than 160 for the initial (lately they have for some it appears).

When you can't afford the annual dues any longer, that's when you know you have too many points.

LOL - Excellent advice! I'd add that when you have to finance the points, then you're buying too many. If you have to finance to even get 25 points, then can you really afford dvc??? In a somewhat risky economy??

I started with 190 points....certainly not "too many". But, it's what I had the cash for. If I had lost my job, I'd only have dues to pay - not debt on a frivolous luxury item. I've added on many times, as I've saved the cash to pay for them but always considering the impact on my annual dues. My dues are now around $5600/year and I don't really want them any higher, so I guess for me "too many" *might* be 1141, but who knows what the future will bring. Some day I might decide I need fewer points - or more!

I disagree on the whole finance thing, but to each their own. I look at the whole financing thing like the difference between buying and renting your house. Are you going to have to pay more by financing, absolutely! But if you are going to be going on vacation anyway, you may as well have the money your paying go towards a DVC membership versus just spending the money. Some may argue that you should just skip the vacation for a few years then, but your kids are only young once.

Also, if you plan to pay off the loan in a few years rather than keeping it for the full ten, then the interest won't be that great and it may be tax deductible. Also, if worst came to worst and you lost your job and could not find another one you could always sell your contracts.

I feel like I have too many points. I have 3 contracts. They were all paid in cash and I can afford the dues, the problem is that I can't find the time to use all of the points. Our 3 children are adults now and do not want to vacation at WDW and 2 weeks a year is enough for my husband and I. We bought 3 contracts thinking that eventually each child would get one but none of the 3 really like going there now. Oh well.

Not me... :goodvibes
yeah we all know that you could never have too many points:happytv:

i think this is probably the best advice when you have so much that it becomes too much then you def...know when to stop

ppl finance all kinds of things...cars...house...frivolessness...luxury...its life...

but too many is when you have to bank all the time and cant get the usage out of the points...IMHO:scared1:

Not there yet. I still have a serious case of addonitis so guess I haven't hit my ceiling yet!!!! :cool1:
