Is there some new rule about how much change you can carry on?

My DH says there is some new rule about how much change you can carry on the plane. Anyone know anything about this? I want to carry quarters for the tolls in my carry on, but I don't know if there is a limit on how many I can take. Maybe this limit is only for international travel? I googled all the combinations of flying, change, coins, etc that I could think of and nothing came up. I also checked the TSA site. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks!

If there is, I haven't heard about it.

My DS always carries a bag full of quarters for the arcade. Every time we go through security they pull his bag aside for a hand inspection, but no one has ever told him that he couldn't take them on the plane.

I fly almost every week, both internationally and within the US. I also read flyertalk.com almost daily.

There had not been any recent announcement posted at the airport or on various websites

Great -- thanks! I have no clue where he got this idea, but I'm glad to know I can carry my quarters on the plane now!

if you are transporting more than $10,000 USD internationally you do need to declare it - is your husband planning to carry 40,000 quarters somewhere?? ;)

However, 39,999 quarters would be absolutely fine... ;)
Cept for the whole weight thing. By the way, tell me this isn't a fit freaky...

According to my good friend - the internet - a quarter weights 5.67 grams

4,000 x 5.67 grams = 50.0008 pounds
3,999 x 5.67 grams = 49.9876 pounds

weight limit for most bags = 50 pounds. Coincidence?

Some of you have way too much time on your hands! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

wow

wonder if keeping them all in zip-lock bags would bring it over 50lbs tho?
hmm ;)

The only issue I can think of is that *rolls* of coins in carryons sometimes attract extra scrutiny from TSA if for whatever reason their placement makes the shape look a little odd. (Packages of batteries, especially the big bar-shaped packs sold at places like Cosco, can look like clips of ammunition on the scanner, so they can have the same issue.) Once they can see that the change is change (or that the batteries are batteries), it is no longer a problem.

If he is concerned, I'd put all your spare change in a ziploc and put it in an outside pocket of the bag where it will be easily seen and identified by the TSO's.
