I quit drinking soda/pop about 4 years ago and have been drinking seltzer...about 2 cans a day. (no sugar added...just carbonated water)

My sister just told me it was bad for you.

Anyone know why??

From what I understand it's just carbonated water. So just water and CO2. It's got to be better for you than soda. Although I'm curious, how can you drink that plain? :confused3

Oh and maybe someone knows....what's the difference between seltzer and club soda?

That sounds strange, it is just carbonated water. And I honestly don't know the differance between the two, maybe one is less carbonated than the other? :confused3 If that is possible.

I drink both and they taste the same to me!

I actually like it, lol. I can't stand diet soda, and with the diabetes in my family I'm afraid of the sugar kind.

I like it too. I used to drink that a while back instead of diet soda, I didn't used to like the diety taste. It seems that the taste of the diet has gotten a lot better and I switched to it because I was pre-diabetic.

I believe the difference between club soda and seltzer is that club soda has salt (sodium) in it and seltzer does not.

I have never heard of that either. I have been drinking seltzer water for years now instead of soda. I love it.

Maybe she's confusing seltzer with tonic water.

I believe (not 100% sure) that tonic water has quinine in it, and large amounts are VERY bad for you.

I've read nothing about Seltzer being bad for you. It's considered a form of water because of the purities in it. It's been considered a water from Weight Watchers ano other nutrition organizations, as well.

Ask your sister for information based on what she expressed.

I love seltzer!

I don't know the difference, but the stuff they drink here sure does have sodium in it.

I remember seeing a report on the news that the carbonation in seltzer breaks down calcium in your body. This could possibly lead to osteoporosis. I guess that would be true for soda too since it's carbonated as well. There's no way I'm giving up my diet soda!

I found this:
“Mindconnection’s Information Connection: How to Have Healthy Skin”
http://www.mindconnection.com/library/health/skinhealth.htm,
we learn that carbonation can break down calcium in the human body,
which can be a risk to weak tooth structure and in severe cases lead
to osteoporosis.

Also an excess of carbonation can cause kidney stones. If you were to drink 8-10 cans/glasses per day on a regular basis you might have a problem. 2 glasses a day I wouldn't think would be a problem. And if it's a choice between carbonated water and soda, the water going to be a much healthier choice.

Thanks guys.

I called her again and she said it was the osteoperosis thing. She didn't remember why it was bad the first time I asked (see my tag....she is even flakier than me!)

I guess it is bad...but since it is better than regular soda, I'll take the risk!

From what I've been told, Club soda has ADDED salt vs. seltzer that may have naturally occuring salt.

Interesting since both bottles had the same listed ingredients: "carbonated water". There was no percentage of sodium either. Hmmmm...
