Is there anyone who can help me with a vaccination question?

My DS got behind on his shots right at 15 months, so he has missed both MMR's and his boosters at age 4.

I contacted our Ped. to find out what all he needed to get caught up, and the nurse said just the 2 MMR's.

I asked her what he would of had at the 4 year check-up, and she said the MMR, DTAP, and a Polio.

So I then asked her since he didn't have any of those didn't he need the DTAP and Polio as now as well, and she said no.

Does this sound right??

I'm not questioning her information really, it's just that she didn't explain why, and it doesn't really make sense to me. I mean if he missed those shots at 4, why doesn't he have to have them now??

TIA

I don't have the answer, but if you don't get one here, I'd call her back, say I got to thinking about it I'm wondering why he doesn't need the other two vaccinations now. It does seem strange, so I don't think she could blame you for asking, just out of curiosity.

What I know is that my kids supposedly had all of their vaccinations when they were in Russia. When they got to this country, my ped, who also adopted from Russia, said that those were watered down versions, at best.

So, DD (5) and DS (6) started to receive all of their vaccinations as if they had just been born, only on a faster schedule. They'd get 3-4 shots each time we'd go to the ped's office.

Your doctor will be able to tell you what he needs... perhaps, too, you can get information from your school district about what is required for school. We found out that even though we though the kids were UTD, there were some vac's that the dr missed and we had to get them in order to keep the kids in school.

I would ask the Doctor when you go in for that. I know they insisted my husband catch up on his as an adult, MMR and Polio, I am not sure about dtap. My sister adopted and I know they put her kids on a catch up plan that included all doses.

I wonder if she just misunderstood what was going on? He will HAVE to have them to start school.

I just tried tp call the nurse back, but there gone for the day. I'm not worried about the records as far as school goes, because we homeschool. I am very concerned about being up to date for the health aspect! Especially with this current Mumps outbreak!

Don't know if this will help anyone help me figure this thing out, but I found my copy of his records..(note to self..get my files a little more organized!) :teeth:

He has had... 4 DTAP....3 OPV...4 Hib...and 3 HepB.

He has not had any MMR's, and has also not had the Chicken Pox one, but most likely won't be doing that one.

Looking at my immunization chart produced by the CDC, it looks like your chld need 2 MMRs, 1 DTAP(or DT if you child is over 7), and one IPV. They no longer use the oral polio so that one is a shot now. Chicken Pox is suggested to reduce the risk of complications.

I would ask the ped about this. I think your nurse didn't understand or was reading the chart wrong. You definitely want to get some of those caught up.

Ok...so according to this....

Older children and adults - DTaP should not be given to anyone 7 years of age or older because pertussis vaccine is only licensed for children under 7. But older children, adolescents and adults still need protection from tetanus and diphtheria. A booster shot called Td is recommended at 11 to 12 years of age, and then every 10 years. There is a separate Vaccine Information Statement for Td vaccine.

For Children who received an all-IPV or all-oral polovirus(OPV) series, a fourth dose is not necessary if the third dose was administered at less than 4 years.
If both OPV and IPV were administered a total of 4 doses should be administered, regardless of the childs's current age.

So is she right then, and he only needs the 2 MMR's??

Oy..my head hurts! :rolleyes2
