I was on vacation the week from July 10-17. When we came home on Saturday I noticed quite a few of those tiny, tiny, little ants on my kitchen counter. I know I wiped down the counters right before I left, I don't believe there was any food left out (I doubled checked). On Sunday, when I got to the store, I bought a couple of ant traps (supposedly, the ants go into the trap, eat the poison and bring it back to the any colony to share with the Queen???) But now, it seems as if there are more than ever!!! Can I use ant spray on kitchen counters? DH says no, but I'm desperate!!! What were your tried/true ways to get rid of them?

We had trhe same problem a few weeks ago. They kept coming back so we figured there was a nest somewhere. We did end up spraying the kitchen counters and the whole area and then we cleaned it up using lots of bleach and making sure everything was santitised before anything went back on the counters. Three weeks later and we are still alive and the ants have not returned.

A friend swore by the Terro liquid ant bite. It comes in the little trap like the one you are using. It was not working fast enough for me! Fortunately, I noticed there was a crack in the baseboard by the floor where lots of ants were coming and going. I tipped the trap and poured some of the liquid from inside it down into the crack. The ants haven't returned since. I probably should caulk that crack so they don't come back in the future. Look around and see if you can figure out how they are getting in and focus on their entry point instead of the counters.

In the meantime, I found that I could kill the ants on the counter with spray cleaner. Some of the natural ones, like Seventh Generation, are soap based and act like insecticidal soap. You could also make up your own water/dish detergent mix and spray it on them. They die when the soap hits them.

Terro works great, but you do have to allow a few days becauseinitially, it draws lots of ants, but then they bring the terro back to the next and kill the rest.

Another vote for Terro Liquid Ant baits. I love them because they work. 24 hours and the ants were gone for me. They recommend you leave them out for 10 days to take care of any eggs.
I only use them and no other ant baits because they are completely non toxic to pets.

From the Terro website:

Question: I accidentally stepped on one of the ant traps. How toxic is this bait and will this exposure harm me? What if my cat or dog gets into the bait and eats some?

Answer: TERRO® Liquid Ant Bait is a sweet food based product similar to pancake
syrup combined with Borax. Borax is a mineral that is mined in the desert
in California and is a common active ingredient that is used in soap
products such as 20 Mule Team Borax.

The product kills ants but will not harm people or pets. If you spill some
on your skin there will be no reaction at all. Simply wash with warm water.

Pets occasionally find the Terro and eat it. Our advice when this happens
is to do nothing at all. The product is not toxic enough to cause a problem
and the pet will be just fine.

TERMINEX is our tried & true way to get rid of all bugs.

I will not live with bugs. That company is worth every penny. We are totally bug free. :thumbsup2

Another vote for Terro. You will see your ant population increase in the short term, as more and more ants will come out to eat the bait. However, the numbers will quickly drop to zero.

We had a lot of problems in an apartment building that we lived in - the ants were coming in from outside, and the entire building was having trouble, so all we could really do was keep Terro traps near where they were coming in so they would come in, collect the poison, and immediately leave.

They HATE Boric Acid and won't cross it. If you can find where they are coming in at, and sprinkle boric acid powder, they will stay out. Not the healthiest stuff, but it beats ants.

Yet another vote for Terro. Our old house had those tiny ants and we had the exterminator out to no avail. My husband went to Lowe's and found Terro and our ants were gone within days.

OP, I'm in CT too and saw ants yesterday in MY kitchen!

I'm going to stop and get Terro today on my way home.

Make your own-mix borax with sugar.
Super cheap and in your grocery store.:thumbsup2

Those tiny, tiny ants are attracted to grease/oil not sugar, so be sure you haven't got anything sitting around to attract them. I had a tupperware container filled with oil I had used to fry something, and I wasn't sure what to do with it, so I put the lid on it. It was sealed tightly, but we were overrun with those tiny ants for about two weeks. Also, regular spray killed them, but didn't prevent them from coming back! Normally if we get sugar ants, I spray the area where they were coming in with some spray and it keeps them out for a couple weeks or until they find a new way in. The little ants were just marching over the dried spray like it was nothing!

Anyway, I tossed the used oil and they disappeared!

Torro is great, but it is really gross too. It draws in swarms of ants *shiver* then in a few days they are all gone.

I just want to pass on my sympathy!

We had the same problem - teeny tiny ants, so tiny they look like dirt, until you look closer and realize the dirt's moving.

We found out that they're called "Pharaoh Ants", and they're attracted to protein and grease. They're also different from other ants, in that they have multiple queens and if you put their community under stress they'll actually split up and send queens out and each queen will start a new community. Standard spraying and dusting can make them worse, because they'll just scatter.

They can get into containers that we'd normally think of as "sealed" - like peanut butter jars with the tops closed tightly! They walk right up the screw top, around and around, and get into the jar, no problem. It was not a great feeling when I opened up my jar of peanut butter and found it black with the little b@st@rds. They also like breakfast cereal. My poor son ate most of his bowl, before realizing that the black bits floating in the milk weren't granola. His sister STILL teases him about it! :lmao:

Wikipedia recommends boric acid baits, but what worked best for us was putting all our food (except the stuff in unopened cans) inside the fridge (they're tropical, so they can't take the cold). And then I'd spray them with Lysol spray and scrub any areas I found them in. After which I'd leave a coating of Lysol on the surface for awhile. I also sprayed all the baseboards with Lysol, and anywhere else I thought they might be coming in.

It seemed to work, as I haven't seen them in years. We've also had the house lifted and a basement poured since then, so the construction probably destroyed whatever was left of their nests. :goodvibes

Good luck!
