Is there any way of rescuing this carpet?

My daughter was gone all weekend, so we didn't know that her ceiling got a leak in it from the rain. The carpet is drenched in a rather large area and it also smells like cat spray. I don't believe it's actually from a cat (could be from previous owners), but maybe the odor that's coming down from the ceiling? I don't know.

Do any of you have any ideas of what I can do to rescue her carpet, or should we give it up as a lost cause and tear it out? Most of our house has old hardwood floor, but we have no way of knowing what is under the carpet without tearing it out. In the meantime, we have two other bedrooms we can move her to, but I'm hoping to take care of her room ASAP before any mold sets in. :headache:

I will tell you that if it is cat urine use an enzyme to spray on the carpet. We own a carpet cleaning bus. Husband has been cleaning carpets for over 30yrs. You should have pad, water needs to be sucked up if any left. Carpet should be pulled back and a fan to dry it. Then you need to either clean it professionally, or clean it yourself. If you clean it yourself dont use to much cleaner and use the hottest water that you can to clean. Make sure to use clean water for rinsing. That is why I say not to much soap. Carpet cleaning co. sells stuff for mold to spray on carpets as well. Hope this helps a little. Let me know if you have any other questions. JO forgot to ask what kind of carpet do you have? Do you know what kind of fiber.?

Thank you!! That was helpful. No, I don't know what kind of fiber it is. It's a really flat, low pile carpet. Do you think Rug Doctor rentals are any good? I think that's the only brand around here other than professional cleaners. We do have Nature's Miracle, which I believe is an enzyme spray.

Like I said, though, I'm not sure it's even cat spray. It's just got a sharp odor like that. I'd think if it was cat spray, we would have noticed the smell before now.

Back when I still had carpet (I have all hard surfaces now) I had great luck with Rug Doctor machines that I would rent from the hardware store. They got some very dirty carpets looking like new and dry to the touch. Depending on the amount of water, though, you still may need to pull up the carpet just to let the padding dry.

Rug docs are ok. It just will take a little doing to suck it up after cleaning. Truck mount is more powerful suction. I just talked to husband he said mold will clean out of the carpet. Also remember if stains come back it is bleed back from the pad. Your carpet should be fine. If you have any other qauestions feel free to ask. Glad it helped some. Jo

The best thing for mold and cat pee smell is white vinegar. I had a cat that got old and made some messes on my carpet and have spent a small fortune to try and remove smell. Nothing worked long term. We have since used white vinegar in our carpet shampooer and it worked wonderful. I have found this product works great on mold/mildew issues too. Its cheap and natural! Good luck.

Check around for someone who cleans up water damage (you can call your homeowners insurance agent and ask who they recommend -- or just look in the phone book). When my inlaws had a water damage (really severe) they sent a company that just did water removal, strong suction, big fans. If it's a smaller area, I'd try the Rug Doctor first to remove existing water, then clean as an earlier poster recommended.

We have used Nature's Miracle from the pet store for pet stains in the past, it has worked well for us!
